STORYLINE
Following the farm invasions and indiscriminate killing of white farmers in Zimbabwe, there are fears neighbouring South Africa could go the same route unless they succeed in land redistribution and land reform. To prevent the problem the South African government is making money available for farm-workers to buy a share in the commercial farms where they work. A recent land deal is considered a model of private initiative with government support: farm workers in the Western Cape clinched the majority share in a huge and highly successful trio of export grape farms.

De Leeuwenhof Estate in Paarl, Cape Winelands (South Africa)

It's the area with the highest natural limestone, in the Cape. And it's pretty good for ensuring, you know, firm acidities, so you know we're lucky we can stay away from the acid bags, adding acidity - which is nice, a sort of a GREEN, nice green approach.

It's more of a symbolic thing, recognising that we do have fantastic agricultural product, in especially wine. Wine, I think if Africa is going to pick itself up and not be the sort of underdog continent of the world, I think agriculture is one of the main things that can help in that process. And wine being one of the most sophisticated agricultural forms. It's quite important in that sense, or can be quite significant.

You know, we've got pretty much our destiny in our own hands. We've got beautiful vineyards, we really pamper them and really make sure we start off with a 100% fruit component. We know what the end result is because the marketeers lead us in that direction. But it's given us free will to sort of really concentrate on the mid palate. So, I think the team at Graham Beck is mid-palate winemakers, you know.. We just want to make that journey - of the wine on your palate, last a little while longer.

For sure it is another philosophy here, its not the same terroir, it is not the same climactic conditions, its another approach.

But it is a product that is very similar to our product in Champagne. It is a very beautiful product, very well done, and for me, it is really of a high quality.

Day trip turned full on overnight adventure
What was to be a quick day trip into the Cederberg, turned into one of the best bike rides of my life. Some new roads explored, which resulted in us running out of water and low on fuel in what can be described as the middle of nowhere. Luckily the Oasis that is Tankwa Tented Camp (where the Africa burn is held every year) was close by. We decided to stay the night, which was a good idea given we got the best braaivleis ever. This trip again showed that the biggest adventures, are unplanned.
