Kleinmarkthalle (Indoor Market Hall) – Frankfurt, Germany (Frankfurt am Main)
Then, we walked to a susage vendor for sasuage tasting. Our prviate tour guide explained to us the different types of sausages and how they taste, the texture, how they were made and which type is only available in Frankfurt. He told us that “Frankfurter Würstchen“ is only available in Frankfurt, so it was a MUST-TRY! Frankfurter Würstchen is a thin parboiled sausage made of pure pork in a casing of sheep’s intestine. The special taste is acquired by a special method of low temperature smoking.
As many peeps may know, sausage is a huge part of German cuisine, it comes in different variety and meat types. In North America, our beef or chicken hotdogs are hold by hotdog buns and we stuffed our hotdogs with all the different toppings from onions, relish, mushrooms, sweet corn, bacon bits and finished with ketchup, mustard or perhaps mayo. From this Germany trip, I learned that Germans prefer their hotdogs in a more simplistic way. They either consume the sausage straight up with no buns or have a mini kaiser and hold onto a long sausage. They pretty much prefer the sausage longer than its bun. And no toppings, just simple mustard and that`s about it. Nice and simple. And I actually like it that way as well, less toppings means I get to smell and taste the sausage better without the toppings altering the original taste of the meat.

Kleinmarkthalle (Indoor Market Hall) – Frankfurt, Germany (Frankfurt am Main)
If you love fresh produce and love grocery shopping, you can either check out the outdoor farmer’s market (see my MoVernie BLOG here) or check out a big indoor market hall called “Kleinmarkthalle”. Based on the INFO from the Frankfurt Tourism, it says on its webpage that “Kleinmarkthalle is a 1,500-sq/m indoor market hall, a culinary paradise beyond compare.” And I am 100% agree with its description.
Our friendly private tour guide gave us a brief introduction about Kleinmarkthalle. It has 2 floors with vendors selling cheese, sausages, vegetables, meat, seafood and more. It also have vendors that sell cooked food. There is also coffee shops. From a glance, it reminds me of our famous St. Lawrence Market in Toronto, Canada. Same layout, 2 floors of fresh produce and cooked food. What`s different is that at Kleinmarkthalle, the coffee shop can also sells alcohol, we ordered Prosecco. What an experience! For ONLY $3 Euro, you can enjoy a glass of Prosecco. In Toronto, an average glass ranges from $15-$20 CDN. Based on the current currency, that`s about $11 Euro. That`s why we decided to go for round 2.
Then, we walked to a susage vendor for sasuage tasting. Our prviate tour guide explained to us the different types of sausages and how they taste, the texture, how they were made and which type is only available in Frankfurt.
The Kleinmarkthalle is a market hall in the old town of Frankfurt am Main. On working days, from 63 retailers in 156 market stalls, all kinds of fresh food, but also flowers and seeds, are offered on approximately 1,500 square meters of space. In addition to regional specialties, such as the green sauce, imported food is also sold today. Likewise, some retailers are running snack stalls in the hall. This makes the Kleinmarkthalle a retail center with significance for the entire Rhine-Main region.
Originally in Frankfurt, as in other cities, fresh produce was brought into the city by local farmers and sold on public marketplaces. Numerous traditional street names and places point out, for example the Weckmarkt, the corn market, the chicken market and the horse market. In the Old Town, the artisans lived and worked separately according to guilds, where, for example, the butchers sold meat and sausages in their dishes.
In the 19th century, the increased demands on hygiene requirements arose from a regulation of market operation. In 1871 the magistrate decided to build an urban market hall on the premises between Fahrgasse and Hasengasse. It was built between 1877 and 1879 in the then modern style of the Neo-Renaissance under the direction of Stadtbaurat Behnke by J. S. Friesohn.
The old market hall was a glazed iron construction in the form of a three-nave basilical hall of 117 meters in length, 34 meters in width and 22 meters in height. Only the four symmetrical corner risers were massively executed in stone. The sales area on the ground floor included 4,000 square meters with 354 sales stands, 114 other stands were placed on a 6 meter wide circulating gallery. The market hall soon enjoyed great popularity among its citizens. Friedrich Stoltz wrote:
To drink, to drink, and what else, that creeps here in the Hall. And owwe uff of the gallery, since möpselts to Fromaash de Brie.
Until the opening of the wholesale market hall in 1928, the market hall also served the wholesale trade. At the beginning of the 20th century a tram line was established between the preferred bourgeois residential area in the Westend and the lane. In the Volksmund, it was also referred to as the maid service line.
In 1929 the hall was rebuilt, its façade straightened. In March 1944 the small market hall was destroyed during the heavy bomb attacks on Frankfurt, their remains after the Second World War were removed.

However, the project met with fierce criticism in the Frankfurt public and was therefore withdrawn.

Markt Stubb
Today we are going to Kleinmarkthalle to shop at their fresh food market and to have our lunch there. A local fresh food market is really the place for us to know better the daily life of a German family, on what they will buy for food and fruits. Also we will see some different stuff that we don't usually see in our country.
Markt Stubb restaurant is serving delicious local delicacies. Luckily we were there slightly earlier, else it is extremely difficult to get a table during the lunch hour.
It is worth visiting the Bike Boutique, it display all different designs of bicycle, really feel like buying one back home but the price is pretty expensive.
