The Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is conveniently situated: 10 km from the centre of Johannesburg, 5 km from Soweto and 25km from Sandton.
It is the largest proclaimed nature reserve in the Johannesburg Metropolitan area (over 700 ha. in extent). The reserve boasts a surprising diversity of interests ranging from larger game such as zebra, red hartebeest, and black wildebeest, to many items of botanical, geological, archaeological, historical and cultural interest. Red data listed and other protected species are also to be found.

Nature on your doorstep
Modderfontein Reserve seeks not only to protect indigenous fauna and flora in the area, but also to provide an attractive open space within the urban fabric where visitors can come and enjoy its natural beauty without traveling too far from home.
The vision for the Reserve is to create, within an urban setting, a natural open space which is socially, economically and ecologically sustainable.
The 275-hectare private park is the second-largest private park in Gauteng and includes portions of the Modderfontein Spruit, a number of dams, grassland and hills.
The Reserve is operated by the Endangered Wildlife Trust on behalf of Heartland Properties. The Modderfontein Conservation Society have had input into the area for many years now and are assisting with the establishment of the reserve.

I really enjoy hiking solo and try to do it as often as I can, but there are a few things to remember that I've covered in my video of the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve. It was my first time hiking Klipriviersberg, which is shocking since I grew up about ten minutes away from there! Let me know what you think of the vlog!

Eko Ondersoek -Klipriviersberg nature reserve
Nestled on the southern edge of Johannesburg, the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve is a 650ha plot of land containing rocky koppies and precious fragments of what remains of our Highveld grassland. A visitor walking through would enjoy the variety of herbivore species, including zebra, hartebeest, springbok, black wildebeest, mountain reedbuck and more. What the visitor may not recognize is the drastic transformation from grassland to degraded veld and even barren, eroded land caused by overgrazing. After the introduction of game in 2001, the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association appealed to Johannesburg City Parks to monitor and manage growing game numbers which are now leading to the destruction of this grassland ecosystem. Our Eko-Ondersoek team investigates why nothing has been done and asks questions of the future of this beautiful reserve; one of the last remaining pockets of unspoiled biodiversity in the Johannesburg surrounds.

Rietfontein Ridge Nature Reserve, Johannesburg✔

The pristine 24 hectare bushveld nature reserve stretches over a rocky ridge and forms part of the green belt that runs all the way to Kyalami in the north. The Reserve is home to FreeMe, and is located at 138 Holkam Street, Rietfontein Ridge, Paulshof, Johannesburg, South Africa.
The reserve is open every day from 6 am - 6 pm and can be accessed via either the main entrance at 138 Holkam Road or via the FreeMe entrance just a little further down the road. Entrance is free, but please note that no dogs are allowed in the reserve. There is a short and relatively easy walking trail in the reserve - suitable for kids - which takes visitors to the top of the ridge with great views of Sandton.

Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Hike - 2018 03 04
Hiking Trail @ Hennops, Johannesburg, South Africa
Roughly an hour (35km) out of Johannesburg, we find ourselves nestled in the middle of the mountains surrounded by good laughs, good times and great memories. Amongst hiking trails, mountain biking and even some 4x4 experiences available for the avid 4x4 die-hard the overall experience was just magical. We had such a blast, and through the filming, water break and some challenging rocky uphills we managed to smash the 5km course in under 41 minutes. (40.35s to be exact)
We have decided to start hiking full time. its woken something up deep inside of me that has been dormant for so long. what a time to be alive, taking in every single experience and making it your own.
