Knidos or Cnidus is an ancient settlement located in south-western Asia Minor, modern-day Turkey. It was an ancient Greek city of Caria, part of the Dorian Hexapolis. It was situated on the Datça peninsula, which forms the southern side of the Sinus Ceramicus, now known as Gulf of Gökova. By the 4th century BC, Knidos was located at the site of modern Tekir, opposite Triopion Island. But earlier, it was probably at the site of modern Datça (at the half-way point of the peninsula).[1]
It was built partly on the mainland and partly on the Island of Triopion or Cape Krio. The debate about it being an island or cape is caused by the fact that in ancient times it was connected to the mainland by a causeway and bridge. Today the connection is formed by a narrow sandy isthmus. By means of the causeway the channel between island and mainland was formed into two harbours, of which the larger, or southern, was further enclosed by two strongly built moles that are still in good part entire.
The extreme length of the city was little less than a mile, and the whole intramural area is still thickly strewn with architectural remains. The walls, both of the island and on the mainland, can be traced throughout their whole circuit; and in many places, especially round the acropolis, at the northeast corner of the city, they are remarkably perfect.
Knidos was a city of high antiquity and as a Hellenic city. According to Herodotus'sHistories) (I.174), the Cnidans were Lacedaemonian colonists; however, the presence of demiurges there argues for foundation or later influence by other Doric Greeks, possibly Argives. Diodorus Siculus (Bibliotheca Historica 5.53) claimed that Cnidus was founded by both Lacedaemonians and Argives.[3] Along with Halicarnassus (present day Bodrum, Turkey) and Kos, and the Rhodian cities of Lindos, Kamiros and Ialyssos it formed the Dorian Hexapolis, which held its confederate assemblies on the Triopian headland, and there celebrated games in honour of Apollo, Poseidon and the nymphs.
The city was at first governed by an oligarchic senate, composed of sixty members, and presided over by a magistrate; but, though it is proved by inscriptions that the old names continued to a very late period, the constitution underwent a popular transformation. The situation of the city was favourable for commerce, and the Knidians acquired considerable wealth, and were able to colonize the island of Lipara, and founded a city on Corcyra Nigra in the Adriatic. They ultimately submitted to Cyrus, and from the battle of Eurymedon to the latter part of the Peloponnesian War they were subject to Athens. During the hellenistic age, Knidos boasted a medical school; however, the theory that this school already existed at the beginning of the classical age is an unwarranted extrapolation.
In their expansion into the region, the Romans easily obtained the allegiance of Knidians, and rewarded them for help given against Antiochus III the Great by leaving them the freedom of their city.
During the Byzantine period there must still have been a considerable population: for the ruins contain a large number of buildings belonging to the Byzantine style, and Christian sepulchres are common in the neighbourhood.
Eudoxus, the astronomer, Ctesias, the writer on Persian history, and Sostratus, the builder of the celebrated Pharos at Alexandria, are the most remarkable of the Knidians mentioned in history.
Bishop Ioannes of Cnidus took part in the Council of Chalcedon in 451 and was one of the signatories of the letter that in 458 the bishops of the Roman province of Caria, to which Cnidus belonged, wrote to Byzantine Emperor Leo I the Thracian after the murder of Proterius of Alexandria. Bishop Evander was at the Second Council of Constantinople in 553 and Bishop Stauratius at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787. No longer a residential bishopric, Cnidus is today listed by the Catholic Church as a titular see

Knidos or Cnidus, an ancient Greek city in Asia Minor and once part of the country of Caria is located on the Datça peninsula where the Aegean sea meets the Mediterranean. Knidos, one of the major harbour cities along the Anatolian shores, is situated at the extremity of the long Datça peninsula.

Datça’ya 33 km uzaklıkta bulunan Knidos, yarımadanın en uç noktasında, Akdeniz ve Ege'nin birleştiği Tekir Burnu'nda konumlanmış, antik dünyanın en önemli metropollerinden biridir. Kent doğusunda ve batısında yer alan iki limanıyla mavi yolculuklara kucak açar. Knidos, ticari nedenlerle,MÖ 4. yüzyılda yarımadanın uç noktasına, bugünkü görkemli kalıntıların izlendiği yere taşınmış.
Kuruluşu MÖ 13. yüzyıllara uzanan kent MÖ 4. yüzyıldan itibaren sanat, kültür, sağlık ve dini merkez olarak ünlenmiştir. Ayrıca geliştirdiği ekolüyle bir tıp merkezi olan Knidos birçok bilim insanına da ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Bu kişilerden Mimar Sostratos İskenderiye Deniz Feneri’nin mimarı oluşuyla ünlenirken, Knidoslular tarafından satın alınan Çıplak Aphrodite heykeliyle de Praxiteles en ünlü heykeltıraşlar arasına girmiştir. Yine Knidoslu öğreti diye bilinen tedavi yöntemini Euryphon ve öğrencileri geliştirmiştir.
Antik dönemde olduğu gibi günümüzde de mavi yolculuğun uğrak noktalarından olan Knidos, masmavi denizi ve hemen karşısında yamaca yayılan antik kalıntılarıyla ziyaretçilere görsel bir şölen sunar. Günümüzde ziyaretçilerine uzun bir gezi parkuru sunan kentte, Yuvarlak Tapınak, Dionysos Stoası ve Tapınağı, Apollon tapınağı, Bolukrates Çeşmesi ve ziyaretçileri ilk karşılayan yaklaşık beş bin kapasiteli küçük tiyatrosu başlıca görülecek kalıntılardır.

DATÇA
Datça is a district of Muğla Province in south-west Turkey, and the center town of the district. The center is situated midway through the peninsula which carries the same name as the district and the town (Datça Peninsula).
Geography
The long and narrow Datça Peninsula, whose outline follows the undulations of small bays and coves facing south or north all along its length which reaches near 100 km (62 mi), corresponds almost exactly to the Datça district, with the addition beyond its isthmus of a small panhandle in the direction of the south-east. The isthmus itself is only several hundred meters wide.
The extreme end of the western tip of the district and the peninsula, the locality called Tekir, is the location of the ancient city of Knidos. There is an ongoing debate on whether or not this location was the original site of the ancient city, a number of sources claiming that until the mid-4th century BCE, Knidos was halfway along the peninsula, near the present-day district center.
The peninsula's eastern end is marked by the fjord-like indentation of Bencik Cove, 1.5 km in length, at the end of which the narrow isthmus where it joins the mainland is found. This point is a natural curiosity which offers a wide view of the Gulf of Gökova in the north and the Gulf of Hisarönü in the south and is called Balıkaşıran (literally, the place where fish may leap across) and is also often used for the portage of small boats. According to Herodotus, during the Persian invasions in 540 BC, the Knidians had sought to dig a canal at this spot as a defensive measure and in order to transform their territory into an island. But an oracle was consulted who reportedly said If the gods had so willed, they would have made your land an island. Do not pierce the isthmus. Whereupon they surrendered to the Persians.

Sabah ipimizin sert rüzgarda neredeyse kopmak üzere olduğunu gördük.

M.Ö 4 . yy ortalarında 35 km uzaklıkta , bugünkü kalıntıların bulunduğu Tekir burnuna taşınılır.Knidos; bilim, mimarlık ve sanatta da oldukça ileri bir kentti. Tarihin önemli isimlerine ev sahipliği yapmış bu antik kentte büyük astronomi ve matematik bilimcisi Eudoksus, Doktor Euryphon, ünlü ressam Polygnotos ve dünyanın yedi harikasından biri sayılan İskenderiye Feneri'nin mimarı Sostratos burada yaşadı. M.Ö 4.yy en ünlü heykeltraslarindan olan Praksiteles Atinalı olmasına karşın uzun yıllar
Knidos'ta yaşamış, Knidos'un verdiği ilhamla bir çok ölümsüz esere imza atmıştır. Eserlerinin bir çoğu günümüze gelmemiş olsa da onlar hakkındaki bilgileri aslına uygun yapılmış kopyalarından alıyoruz. Bunların içinde en ünlüsü olan , Knidos Aphrodite heykeli günümüzde bile adı sıkça geçmekte , sanat kavramı olarak söz edilmektedir. Knidos'un bir önemli simgesi'de Knidos Aslanı'dır. Knidos Aslanı M.Ö 394'te Knidos önlerinde yapılan bir deniz savaşını kazanıp kenti işgalden kurtaran komutan Conon için
yaptırıldı ve kızıl kayalıklara dikildi. Ama su kaynaklarının kuruması, depremler ve korsan saldırıları nedeniyle kent terk edildi, heykel'de unutuldu. İngiliz Subay-Arkeolog Sir Charles Newton, 1855 de üç günlük uğraş sonucu gemiye yükletebildiği heykeli ingiltere'ye götürmüştür. Doktor Euryphon ve öğrencileri zamanının ikinci büyük tıp okulunu Knidos'ta kurmuşlardır. Eudoksus'un geliştirdiği ve dönemin büyük buluşu olan mevsimleri ve zamanı gösteren güneş saati, ören yerinde bugün de görülebilir.
