Knockando Woolmill in Aberlour, Moray, UNITED KINGDOM
Knockando Woolmill - 1979
In the summer of 1979 the mill featured in a TV documentary. We had recently got the carding and spinning running again for the first time since we took over in 1976 and were busy spinning natural yarn for a large order for Japan - not hideous tartan! The star of the show was, inevitably, the late Duncan Stewart who took to the silver screen like an old pro - I remember he had a great time that day. Peter Machell wasn't one of three of us who bought the mill in 1976, he was a talented hand weaver who worked with me for 2 years, trying his hand at machine weaving. To me, the best of this is seeing the spinning workshop running (which it will be again in 3 years time) and, of course, Duncan who got the last laugh!

Knockando Woolmill - What is Blending?
At the Woolmill we buy wool that has already been washed, and this is stored in bales in the Scouring Shed. The oil lost during washing has to be introduced back into the wool to ensure the fibres slip against each other, once this has been done the wool is transferred into the teasing machine.
Restored and moved down from the attic, this fearsome machine rips the wool apart and also blends different colours. The teaser is possibly the oldest machine at the Woolmill – mid 19th century or earlier.
The teased wool is then blown into the carding and spinning workshop for the next stage.
Knockando woolmill awarded EU prize for heritage
The Knockando Woolmill Trust is one of just four projects across the UK to receive a European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage and Europa Nostra Award for its work in preserving the region’s history.
The Moray mill creates woven fabric as it has done for 200 years.
