Kosljun - Island Krk, Croatia
Košljun – the small island gem near the island of Krk. It makes up for its small size with its lush nature and rich heritage.
Its formation is depicted in the legend of two brothers: instead of the ocean, there was a field owned by a seeing and a blind brother. They worked together but the blind brother always ended up with less during harvest. So God punished the seeing brother by flooding the field and his house, while the blind brother’s house was spared. The land underneath the house is now known as the island of Košljun.

You can see this island on island when you are driving from Krk town to Punat or Baška town.
It is approximately 300 meters in diameter and covers an area of 6.5 hectares, but is rich in vegetation. The only inhabitants are a group of Franciscan friars living in St. Mary's Monastery.
This island was abandoned in 1447, and present church was built by the Franciscans in 1480

Košljun, Croatian island Pag
Dalmatia, one of 1,200 islands in Croatia. Middle of nowhere, some say the paradise on earth. The facts are that Košljun is settled on south shore of the island, just 7 kilometers from the city of Pag. It is a small port, nested in naturally secure bay. It used to be a harbor of the main town Pag.
Today Košljun is a peaceful village where many people from the mainland have their summer houses. Those people eat famous Pag’s cheese and Dalmatian pršut (ham), drink a lot of beer and really hate tourists. Please don't go there, go to Zrće, Zadar, Split or Dubrovnik.

The Frankopan Castle overlooks the sea and has centuries-old stone walls and a belfry. In a small bay east of the town of Krk is the small island Košljun with a Franciscan monastery.

Island of Krk, legend and reality
Among the 1185 Croatian islands, only one of them is the golden one, the Insula Aurea – the island of Krk. Located in the centre of the Kvarner bay, it is considered one of the most attractive tourist destinations. Its mild Mediterranean climate, good geographical position and variety of natural and cultural beauties gave it, even in ancient times, the name golden island. Its cultural heritage has given it another name – the cradle of Croatian culture, whilst at the beginning of the 20th century it gained the name the “sixth continent”.
The 45th parallel passes through the island, whilst its longest part is 38 km and its widest 20 km long. Its coast is around 190 km long. The closest mainland is only about a hundred metres away and its neighbouring islands are the islands of Cres, Goli and Rab; a few smaller islands also pertain to it (the largest being Plavnik, which has 17 km of coast, and the smaller Školjić with just 400 m of coast); it has an unusual and varied relief, climbing from the north-western part to the south-eastern part – from picturesque gentle coves and lagoons, along fertile fields and dense forests with sub-mediterranean vegetation, to the parts of bare limestone and real mountain landscape. On the island of Krk there are three streams and two lakes.
On the highest mountain top, Obzovi (570 m), visitors may forget that they are actually on an island. Here some very specific phenomena can be found – such as the flora in Krk which includes around 1400 species of land plants, which are almost half of the total in Croatia. Its unique plant the “Barbašova lazarkinja” is one of the world's rarities and it only grows in the Baška lagoon.
Amongst its fauna, we can count rare species too, bird species, for example, vary from eagles/vultures to the oriental steppe vrški tić. To all this complex contrast of natural characteristics we should add a Mediterranean climate – hot summers and mild winters, a cold continental wind that blows from the north-east-the bura and the humid jugo, and a pleasant summer wind, the maestral that blows from the west.
Literally all roads lead to the island of Krk: from the land – over theKrk bridge; from the sea – by boats into the ports or small marinas, and by ferry to the Valbiska harbour, from the air – by plane to Rijeka's airport which is located close to Omišalj.
The island of Krk is just 30 kilometres away from the city of Rijeka – which is the traffic, business, commercial, university and cultural centre of Kvarner. No matter which road you choose, on your arrival to the island of Krk, you will certainly find that the golden island has been honoured with the uniqueness of variety – and is a connection between present and past, modernity and the antiquated, legend and reality.
Since ancient times it is believed that the destiny of the island of Krk is connected to the number seven: it was inhabited by the Croatian people in the 7th century, it has survived attacks by pirates seven times, the seventh nobleman from the Frankopan family was the last Prince of Krk. Today the island of Krk has seven centres.

Breathe in the feeling of wellbeing whilst walking along the romantic pathways by the sea or along the wild shepherd's rock paths.

Punat location
Punat is located in the southwest part of the Island of Krk, in one of the most protected bays on the Adriatic. Punat is a small town with under 2000 inhabitants. What it lacks in size though, Punat more than makes up for it in beauty. It is surrounded by an extremely deep bay called Puntarska draga or Puntarska Bay, where you'll find a miniature island of Košljun along with a Franciscan monastery. Such beauty is rarely seen!
Development of tourism in Punat
Punat has gained a reputation as a beautiful tourist location way back in the 19th century, when empress Karolina, visited the Franciscan monastery on Košljun. After that, numerous people came to visit this beautiful little town.
Punat is a small town which is an oasis away from business, stress and the noise of cities. Sailors will feel especially welcome in Punat since there they will find the biggest and the oldest marina on the Adriatic that can accommodate around 1200 vessels.
Punat is an oasis of peace
Punat is the home to hospitable people to whom the climate has given the mildness, while the rock and the sea have given them care and diligence. All the charm of the simple seaside ambience in Punat comes from the narrow little streets, passages, terraces and taverns which offer good wine. Punat also has a true gem in the middle of the bay – the Islet of Košljun.
Those who answer the call of Punat are blessed with serenity, recreation and spiritual invigoration that are difficult to find elsewhere. If you visit Punat once, you'll return every year!
