MRAUK U KINGDOM TEMPLES, MYANMAR / BIRDS EYE VIEW / DRONE 4K
The Kingdom of Mrauk U in Myanmar, is one of the most beautiful destinations in all of South East Asia. Due to its remote location and undeveloped infrastructure, this amazing landscape of temples has mostly gone undiscovered by tourists. During my 4 days exploring the area, my cousin and I had most of the temples to ourselves. We spent many sunrises and sunsets on the hills watching the sun wash the temples in golden light. Koe Thoung Temple - Rakhine
Located on a plain a few kilometers East of the Royal Palace is the Koe-Thaung temple, the largest structure in Mrauk U. The massive monument, built of stone walls and stone terraces measures 76 meters by 70 meters. Resembling a fortress with its thick stone walls the temple is surrounded by fields of farmers.
The “shrine of the 90,000 images of the Buddha”
Koe-Thaung translates to “shrine of the 90,000 images of the Buddha”, referring to the number of Buddha images that it contained. The temple was built in 1553 to gain religious merit by King Min Dikkha, the son of Min Bin who built the Shite-Thaung (“temple of the 80,000 images of the Buddha”) three decades earlier.
After being abandoned centuries earlier, excavation works started in 1996 and the Koe-Thaung was partly restored. During excavation works several items were found like stone oil lamps, that were used to illuminate the dark interior of the temple.
The massive Koe-Thaung temple is built of stone walls and stone terraces and has a maze like interior. Its entrance is on the East side. The temple is surrounded by five receding terraces on which a large number of small stupas stand. At the center of the Koe-Thaung is a large circular bell shaped stupa.
Spiralling passageway through the temple’s interior
A long vaulted passageway spirals through the interior towards the central chamber. While some parts of the passageway are still intact, other sections have partly collapsed and show large cracks in the stone walls. At some sections a temporary roof has been erected to protect the passageway from rain. The corridor’s walls are adorned with thousands of small images of the Buddha, sculpted in bas relief. At regular intervals are larger images of the Buddha seated on a pedestal in the Bhumisparsha mudra of calling the Earth to witness.
Legend of the Koe-Thaung temple
According to legend the Koe-Thaung temple was hit by lightning and largely destroyed because its builder, King Min Dikkha wanted to outdo his father with the construction of a temple containing 90,000 images of the Buddha, 10,000 more than his father’s temple, the Shite-Thaung. Archeologists believe instead that construction quality of the temple is inferior compared to other temples in Mrauk U because of the very short construction period and the building materials used. While other monuments were mostly built with large sandstone blocks, the Koe-Thaung was constructed with fewer sandstone blocks and more bricks, probably to save time.
What is inside the Htaukkant Thein Tample, Mrauk U
The Htukkanthein temple is a bunker-like Buddhist temple on a small hill located across from Shite-Thaung temple. The structure has a dark interior and a long spiraling corridor leading to the inner chamber. (keep walking because the Buddha at the end is hidden…The Journey is the Reward!).
The temple’s name translates to “cross beam ordination hall”. As the very massive structure is built on raised aground, has small windows and just a single entrance, it is believed that the Htukkanthein served as a place of refuge during times of war.
The Htukkanthein temple was built in 1571 by King Min Phalaung, whose reign brought prosperity and expansion of the Mrauk U empire. Min Phalaung built more than a dozen pagodas, the Royal Palace (1577) as well as the Pitaka Taik, the only remaining library building. The Pitaka Taik is a small, very ornate stone building decorated with carvings of floral motifs found near the Htupayon pagoda, a little to the North. It was used to store the Tripitaka, the ancient Buddhist texts that the King received from Ceylon (present day Sri Lanka).
Built on top of a small leveled hill the square Htukkanthein temple built of massive sandstone blocks and brick measures 32 meters long on each side. The structure is surrounded on all sides by massive stone walls. Stairways on the East and South side lead to the temple, the East one being the main entrance.
On top of the Htukkanthein’s flat surface is a large central bell shaped stupa topped with a circular, mushroom shaped hti. It is surrounded by 4 smaller, similarly shaped stupas at the corners, also topped with a hti. A window in the central dome allows the rays of the sun to illuminate the principal Buddha image in the central chamber. You will find this hidden chamber if you continue… it looks like you’re going to a dead-end, keep going!

I love different cultures and seeing the way they do things. This was the government run (slow) boat to Mrauk U. The little plank (there were actually two planks to walk on) is what you walk on to get on the boat. It was definitely time to pay attention with a backpack on my back and my day pack on my front.
I think these guys are very skilled!

My #1 in Mrauk U!!! The labyrinths are amazing!!! This place in and of itself is worth going to Mrauk U!!! Shittaung means 'Shrine of the 80,000 images', a reference to the number of holy images inside. There are two passage ways, an interior and exterior. There are thick walls with some windows that you can see through the other side of the passage ways.
