Kofukuji Temple (興福寺), Nara City, Japan
西国観音巡礼 第 9 番 南円堂 興福寺
Kofukuji Temple, also sometimes known as Nan-en-do, is a temple located in Nara City. It is one of the temples, technically outside the Nara Park, closer to the JR Nara Station, hence one of the first temples you will encounter on the way to Nara Park.
Kofukuji Temple boasts a majestic five storied pagoda and a sprawling temple precincts. One of the main halls was under remodeling when I visited there, but I was able to video most of the items in the precincts.
Kofukuji is temple #9 in the Saikoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage circuit of Western Japan.
Hope you enjoy!!!
Kofuku-ji Temple in Nara-Japan!
Kofukuji is a Buddhist temple, and is located about 1km southwest of Todaiji Temple. It is at the west end of Nara Park. This temple is one of 9 constructions of Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara designated as a World Heritage Site. This temple was founded in 669 by Kamatari Fujiwara (614-669), who was the ancestor of Fujiwara Clan which had been a noble family from ancient times to medieval times. The original temple was built in Kyoto, but Fuhito Fujiwara (659-720), Kamatari's son, moved to the current place in 710, because Nara became the capital of Japan.
Fujiwara Clan had power and position, so this temple was enlarged by not only the clan but also the government.
And this temple had been the center of power through ancient and medieval times.
But this temple became a normal temple after the foundation of Edo government in the early 17th century.

Nara is probably most famous for it's deer and for Daibutsu – the giant Buddha located in Todaiji temple. But Nara is home to so many great temples and shrines – so make sure you get out and explore beyond Todaiji area if you're visiting Nara!
Located near Todaiji and the Nara Deer Park, Kofukuji Temple is home to the Five-storied Pagoda and a treasure hall housing many national treasures. Being so close to the deer park, there are plenty of deer wandering around that you can feed, or grab a quick pic with and the temple is actually one of the Eight Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara which are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Yasaka Shrine, Nara Deer Park, Kofukuji Temple, and Mochi Balls | Day 5 | Osaka, Japan
Continuing our trip from Osaka, Japan, passing through Nara Deer Park and into Kyoto. Nara Deer park is a very special park where the deer roam free. There are street vendors that sell food for them to eat for a cheap price of 150 yen. Once you acquire the food, be prepared to get chased down by these majestic animals.
On the way there you'll pass by the famous Mochi ball store where they make them fresh. Later in the evening we arrived in Kyoto by train and checked in to our tiny but cozy airbnb. Visited the Yasaka shrine and had some dinner in the Pontocho area where we found a tempura restaurant. We had some exotic selection of tempura and sashimi. Be sure to tune in to the next episode where we explore Kyoto, Japan! See you soon.

Japan Travel: Kofukuji Temple one of four greatest temples of Nara Period, Nara20
Kofukuji Temple used to be the family temple of the Fujiwara, which is the most powerful family clan over much of the Nara and Heian Periods. The temple was founded in Nara at the same time as the capital foundation in 710. At the height of Fujiwara domination, the temple consisted of over 150 buildings.
Today there remain a couple of buildings of great historic importance, including a five story pagoda and a three story pagoda. The five story pagoda is 50 meter tall, ranking second in Japan, after the five story pagoda at Kyoto's Toji Temple with only seven meter gap. Kofukuji's pagoda is both a landmark and symbol of Nara. It was first built in 730, and most recent reconstruction was done in 1426.
While addmission to Kofukuji's temple grounds is free and it can be entered around the clock, there are two areas that require addmission fee: Kofukuji's National Treasure Museum and the Eastern Golden Hall. The National Treasure Museum, recently renovated, exhibits part of the temple's great art collection and is something that must not miss out on for lovers of Buddhist art. Among the many outstanding exhibits, the three-faced, six-armed Ashura Statue is one of the most renowned Buddhist statues in all of Japan.
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00 (National Treasure Museum and Eastern Golden Hall)
Closed: Opened all year round.
Admission: 600 yen (National Treasure Museum), 300 yen (Eastern Golden Hall), 800 yen (both)

奈良・猿沢池のカメと興福寺の五重塔 Sarusawa Pond and Kofukuji Temple Nara Japan
This is the Sarusawa-ike Pond in Nara, Japan. The scenery of Five Storeyed Pagoda of Kofuku-ji Temple to see from the Sarusawa Pond is a symbol of Nara. Many tortoises inhabit this pond from the old days.
