Exploring MAYAN RUINS in Mexico [Kohunlich, Dzibanché & Kinichná] 2019
Join us on a private taxi tour as we go exploring Mayan Ruins in Mexico. We will see the sites of Kohunlich, Dzibanché, and Kinichná.
There are Mayan archaeological sites in this area, settled between 200 BC to 900 AD. Many were first discovered in the early 1900s and plenty more remain, waiting to be excavated.
Kohunlich is a really big site with 14 remains to explore, including the famous Temple of the Masks. Alas, it is a stop for cruise excursions so expect lots of people.
Dzibanché and Kinichná were I favorite by far as we were the only visitors for both sites. This made our visit particularly magical.
We paid each 1500 MXN which is about 78 USD for a private 6-hour taxi tour.

Kohunlich Mayan Ruins
At the ruins, your guide takes you through this breathtaking site named after the majestic cahoon palm tree that grows fronds up to 40 feet tall. Kohunlich Ruins include a sunken palace, acropolis, ball court, courtyards and the main attraction - the masks. Climb the pyramid-like temple for a view of the unique 10-foot high sculpted masks of the sun god 'Kinich Ahau.' Built before 500 A.D., these marvelous masks still retain some of their original colored stucco.
Note: There is a government tax of $5-8 US for the use of video cameras at the site. No tripods and/or professional video cameras are allowed. A boxed lunch and a complimentary bottle of water is included.
Oxtankah Mayan Ruins, Chetumal, Mexico
youtube travel videos
In Chetumal I was lucky to couch surf with Maria and her family. Maria took me for a day tour taking in her FOUR TOP THINGS TO DO IN CHETAMAL.
Number Two on her list was a visit to the Mayan Ruins of Oxtankah, about 16 km's north of Chetumal. Oxtankah appears to have been built in the early classic period (200-600AD) and is unique in that it features pyramids that also double as tombs.
I've visited a lot of Mayan Ruins and what was unique about Oxtankah is that I had the whole site completely to myself! After the crazy crowds of Tulum, and the fences restricting access, it was refreshing to visit a site where I could explore unhindered.

Kohunlich Maya Ruins - Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula
Kohunlich is a large Maya archaeological site that covers about 21 acres. It’s surrounded by dense sub-tropical rainforest that contains almost 200 large structures, most of which remain unexcavated. The city was elaborately planned and engineered with raised platforms and large temples, citadels, courtyards and plazas surrounded with palace platforms, all laid out to channel drainage into a system of cisterns and an enormous reservoir to collect rainwater.
