Kokerbin Rock - Shire of Bruce Rock
Kokerbin is said the be the third largest monolith in Australia.
Sheoak and eucalypt woodland surrounds the rock and it is an important habitat for native flora and fauna.
It is home to a small population of black flanked rock wallabies that are listed as threatened.
Camping was once permitted at the rock but a new campsite has been established just 9km away at the old Kwolyn townsite. Camping at the rock is now 'discouraged'.
Picnic facilities are available and there are walk trails leading to various features such as The Wave, and Devil's Marbles.
A trail leads to the summit and there is a scenic drive track around the rock.
A historic well site that dates from the early 1900s is on the western side of the rock and can be reached either by walk trail or by the scenic drive.
The well is one of the largest of its type and still contains water although there is now a metal barrier in place for safety.
A single room school once operated near the northern end of the rock.
The summit walk is 2km and takes about an hour return to complete.
Toilets are available at the main picnic area on the eastern side.
The rock is thought to be about 2600 million years old. The wave formations were created when the top of the rock was first exposed about 60 million years ago.
Water flowing across the rock collected in the soils around the edge. This caused the underlying granite to degrade and erode and led to the flared rocks that were later exposed as more of the surrounding soils were washed away.

The area depends mostly on cereal crops and sheep and is a receival point for Cooperative Bulk Handling.
A rare underground orchid can be found in the area. This variety spends its entire life cycle beneath the earth and even flowering takes place underground. I understand they are a bit hard to find.
The nearby town of Shackleton has what is reputed to be Australia's smallest bank. As it measures only 3x4 metres the claim is in all likelihood quite true. It is currently operated by Bankwest and is open on Fridays.
An excellent free campsite has been opened in the shire at the site there the town of Kwolyin once stood.
Bruce Rock is one of the larger towns in the area and contains a number of interesting buildings. The local museum is worth a visit and if you want to pick up supplies, the store and butcher are good places to drop in to.
Like most inland towns, Bruce Rock has a good rest area for travellers and modern clean public toilets. Rather unusually, the toilets are attached to a building containing old cars and machinery.

Join us as we head out to Kokerbin Rock, the 3rd largest monolith in Australia, located just 210klm east of Perth near Bruce Rock in Western Australian Wheatbelt.
This is day 1 of a 2 day fast trip with the Getaway 4WD Club.

What do you do when the weather woman predicts storms and tempests? Go camping.
Here we are looking sad and sorry for this trip to Kokerbin.
Trip leader and Matt any words of comfort for us as we head out into this wild and woolly wilderness?

Here we are, first camp stop, morning tea.
Young Phil's got himself a nice little
snack. Well done Dave, a good choice. This is my new
coffee cup new coffee cup. No expenses spared
on these trips Dave,. No, no.
Looks like a beetroot sandwich. Half a salad roll and a diet coke. Well done , you're
on your health food, girl boy.
Here comes Marg and and John. They just went to get
the coffee like me so we're supporting the locals.
Where to next fearless leader? We're going to the campsite at ah...Koo Ko..? Kokerbin Rock? Kokerbin Rock.
Dave took us to a great place to collect firewood. We're just gonna get the ropes on for the climb down there. We found an easier way down. I want to know, Matt, have you brought a chain and we can just stick a chain around there and you can drag it to the campsite.

We're coming into the Kokerbin Rock
campsite. We're all in. Good little spot,
nice and flat and it's dry. There's Phil jumping out.
All the best campsites have gone because i'm filming.

I just want to know where the toilets are. Straight through there. Quicker to go to Bruce Rock?
Okay I've got the tent up. These toilets are bloody miles away...I wont be coming up here during the night I'll give you the tip.
What the hell? Here's a beautiful
campsite. Covered area and everything. Mind you, in fairness to Dave you can see where it's flooding.
Hurrah, found the toilets. You can
stay here 72 hours. Pretty good information bay. It's absolutely full of flowers.
We've come to the historic well site. Good signage here.It's in
pretty good condition.
There's quite a few walks here..Devil's Marbles, Wave Rock, Summit walk.
And here's all the Sheoaks with their little nuts here.
That looks like a fern. So there's a pin cushion one.
Well, this is amazing country.
Phil reckons this is Broom Bush.
Looks like the top of the mountain. I think we're at the top of the wazza what do you reckon Matt? Yeah. It sounds like it.
This is what is called a proper Lands and Surveys cairn.You can see the way its built. That would have been used as a main surveying point before the GPS days. Yeah yeah. At the top you'll find brass fittings. Let's go and have a look because if they're not there I'll know you're bullshitting again.
Oh that is pretty good. I hate to say it Mr Phil but you're right.
Just look at the view from up here. It's from the cairn on top of Kokerbin Rock. It is beautiful. Stunning. There you go...how beautiful is that..?
Here they come the intrepid crea. We've done the Summit Walk. Good one Dave. Here's our fearless
leader dragging his leg there... looking for sympathy.
Here's some other plants out in flower. We're a little bit early. They're going to look beautiful soon.
The group continued to explore the rock. Me? I returned to camp to wait for my friends, Lee and Leonie.
Okay, the girls have arrived, the sun is shining how good is this? Kettles on. Died and gone to heaven mate died and gone to heaven.
Of course, what always happens when you're having a nice
quiet cuppa?
Well we didn't do bad with the collection of wood did we guys? I'm quite proud of that... but fortunately
I brought some dry stuff. Well done Phil.

Got up to a cold morning on the second day of the Kokerbin Rock Getaway. So what's the first thing we need to do? Blessed are the firelighters eh Dave? Phil's that kind of guy who is low-energy...Doesn't wanna hold it.
Good on you John get that ready get a coffee down us.
So what have we got here Leones? Our first injury. Leonie's trying to sneak off and she can't get the car started. The key won't turn in the ignition so we'll give it a go. Steering wheels locked.
What's a favourite pastime of 4 wheel drivers? We love checking out each other's rigs. He's got his trailer brakes here. Yeah yeah. Is that diff lockersThat? Dunno? Yeah probably. Have you got all the maps and everything? Me neither. I've got to get them. Tell you what! The Canning Stock Route...I'd still be out there! Not only is Dave a very skilled trip leader he's also a highly trained bush cook! And ah, this old bloke Ken .He showed me bush toast. Here we go bush toast gang by chef Dave. Oh look at that, see that nice fibre there? That black bit?
Okay Dave, packs on the move? Yes, packs on the move. So, we're all ready to roll now. Dave's giving everyone a final chat. Here we go, Eril's firing. Dave's warming up. My girl's ready.
Well not far up the road what do we come across? A minor obstacle. Is it a hard bottom? Yeah. Ok. I'd walk through it but I'll go first. I'll sacrifice... No, I think we sacrifice the young ones. Matt! Unless you are in crocodile country, it's always best to walk through and check the bottom. You never know what's happened there, could have washed out, broken sections and you don't want to find that out when you're in the middle of the waterway. So we called for volunteers. Phil has agreed to do the deed. Now smile!
I needed both hands on the wheel for the water crossing so Lee took over the filming… and I must say! She captured the excitement of the moment with her high powered commentary!
We can see the cars coming through now we thought we might be getting a bit bogged ...but no... It's fine. And that's the next one through folks. Thank you Eril. And...here he goes! Oh yeah! My friend and four wheel drive enthusiast. Yes, yeah, and what was that? Bloody awesome! He's never met a river crossing he didn't like.
As you can see, we're driving along here after we went across the... bit of water there. And you can see Caroline Rock and the Samphire communities, and the guys up ahead there. The geology out there in the wheatbelt is quite amazing and so is the signage. Here is young Dave giving us destructions that I've missed out on. No, we've come through this way... along here, then we turned right and gone up here... come around and of course we are here now. Beautiful. Go along there and this is the bitumen road. Go along there and this is the bitumen road. I think Kellerberrin Road...bitumen. Right. stop at a little rest area and then we'll go across and down to a lake. Oh beautiful. Sounds good. Thanks Dave.That's alright.
We stopped for morning tea near Mt Stirling. John, you're getting to look like a plumber. (Laughter...oh dear) It's not easy is it getting in and out of these things? Can you believe it? Out came the
gadgets again? That's the pressure release so if something's gonna happen that let's go. Here's Mr. Gadget... and his mate. Now what's this? That’s a kettle. That's the kettle. And how much does this cost? A bit. You get what you pay for, Rona. and then you crank it up and how much is this? How much is this? I think I paid about $140. Yeah right...It's not that that is the issue probably...the gas is very expensive. The convenience. Yeah... It's called Jetboil. Jetboil? Oh OK... Sponsored by Mr Gadget himself. What do you mean Mt Gadget?
After a cup of coffee and a full rundown on Mr. Phil's gadgets, we took off and in no time at all Here we are at Toapin Weir. Looks like you can have a fire here. No sign saying no camping. Wow, seems to be a lot of lovely flowers here… so well worth a visit. And there was a lovely clean toilet, wash basin and soap! So here we are at the weir. I think that's the best one I've ever seen. Oh look at that!. That's fabulous isn't it? You can see the water coming down all the rocks into this area.
So after a bit of a look around we hopped in the cars and made tracks. We were on our way home and we were in search of somewhere for a bit of lunch.
After we had our feed in York we jumped back in the cars and we turned the horses for home and so before we knew it we're back at the muster point and it was time for fond farewells.
What a fantastic two days we had. I highly recommend Kokerbin Rock. A nice reserve. You can't take dogs.

Toapin Rock is a granite outcrop about 160km east of Perth, Western Australia.
Two sides of rock and bottom provided an ideal basin, which only required a wall across the bottom to retain water. Toapin Weir is an early example of a reticulated water system from a rock catchment being used for farm properties. Completed in 1912, the weir is still in use today as a water supply.
A concrete wall was constructed across the natural basin. The wall is 5.5m high, 61m in length and 3.5m in thickness at the bottom tapering off at the top.
A short distance away from the Weir was a small pumping station which was a 9hp pump which forced the water a distance of 3km and to a height of 40m, through 65mm pipes into a storage tank of 150000L capacity.
From this storage tank, water reticulated for some 15km to points of distribution, through the Dangin Park property and onto the township of Dangin. The railway was also connected for use of the locomotives passing through the siding.
