Kokneses pilsdrupas
1209.gadā bīskaps Alberts te lika bijušās senlatviešu koka pils vietā uzcelt mūra pili. Ziemeļu kara laikā, 1701. gadā, sakši atkāpjoties pili uzspridzina, un tā vairs netika atjaunota. Līdz 1966.gadam pilsdrupas atradās augstu kalnā, bet, būvējot Pļaviņu HES ūdenskrātuvi, tās pamatus appludināja Daugavas un Pērses ūdeņi.
Koknese castle ruins
In 1209 bishop Albert ordered to replace an ancient Latvian wooden castle with a castle of stone. In 1701, during the Northern War, the castle was blown up by the retreating Saxons and was never restored. Until 1966 the castle ruins were situated high on a hilltop, but due to the construction of the Pļaviņi hydroelectric power station the castle foundations were flooded by the Daugava and Pērse rivers.

Likteņdārzs no putna lidojuma! (The Garden Of Destiny In Latvia!)
THE GIFT:
With the support of the entire Latvian nation the Garden of Destiny is becoming a reality on an island in Koknese on the Daugava. It is a place where the past, the present and the future of the people as well as the nation merge...merge to give solace to the past, strength to the present and inspiration to follow your dream in the future. Just as generations left the Statue of Freedom to us, we will leave the Garden of Destiny as our legacy.
THE IDEA:
Shunmyo Masuno – a landscape artist from Japan – has visualized the Garden of Destiny. His work was selected as the best of 207 projects by an international jury. Architects Andris Kronbergs and Raimonds Saulitis along with „Design bureau ARHIS”, you, your friends and relatives and the people of Latvia are all helping to make this dream a reality.

Koknese Castle
Before the arrival of the Teutonic Knights, Koknese was the site of a wooden hill fort inhabited by the Balts. In 1209 Bishop Albert of Riga ordered the construction of a stone castle at the site, naming it Kokenhusen. For the first 50 years of its existence, Koknese was solely used as a defensive fort, but by 1277, Koknese had enough population to receive city rights. Koknese also became a member of the Hanseatic League thanks to its strategic location on the Daugava trade route.
The castle was heavily contested between Polish, Swedish and Russian forces in the 16th and 17th centuries. It changed hands many times, while the native inhabitants endured periodic slaughter, capture, and famine. In 1701, during the Great Northern War, Koknese was finally blown up by retreating forces to avoid the strategic castle falling into advancing Russian hands. The castle was never rebuilt and fell to ruin. via wikipedia.org
