Kokoen Garden, Himeji 4K - 好古園●姫路 - Japan As It Truly Is
Kokoen Garden is one of Japan's most beautiful. Many going to Himeji Castle never see it - a complete tragedy. Come see why.
Actually, Kokoen is made up of nine distinct gardens, and you could spend hours enjoying the beautiful design and flowers - with Himeji Castle as a backdrop. Koko-en was constructed in 1992, over an excavated site of samurai homes. The whole area of Kokoen covers about 3.5 hectares and the gardens are made using the same techniques used during the Edo Period (1600-1868).
The main part of the garden is the Nishi-Oyashiki or Lord's West Residence and is arguably the most beautiful of the nine. You can see all of them here though and the names are literal translations of the Japanese titles.

Koko-en is about a 5 minute walk west of Himeji Castle. Open 9 AM - 5 PM (last entry 4:30). Get the combination ticket with Himeji Castle for ¥1040 and visiting one of the places is virtually free. To get the combo ticket you need to ask at the ticket counter, not the vending machines selling tickets.

Day trip from Kyoto to Himeji! This side trip can be easily done from Shin-Osaka as well, still by Shinkansen bullet train!
I wanted to see Himeji castle (but there is nothing inside, there is just the wood structure so not sure if it was worth the ticket's cost tbh but the view from the top of the castle was nice!)
I also went to the garden near the castle and to my surprise it was one of the most well-kept garden I've been so far from my journey in Japan! so pretty!
If you ever go to Himeji and want to visit both castle and garden, you can buy a ticket for both places at discount price!

It’s our day 7. Back to our journey, train ride in the morning. We're heading to Kyoto but we stopped by Himeji. It's on our way. The castle is majestic. What I really like about castle in Japan, most of them, we can go inside the castle. Not just look at the exterior but we can also look on the interior.
We spent couple of hours there. Then we're off to Kyoto. Then spent the rest of the night walk around kyoto.

If you like Japanese gardens, this is a very nice place to visit. It is next to Himeji Castle. You can buy combo-ticket, because the castle itself a main attraction and very impressive.
The garden has several sections where you can peacefully relax at some locations.

Video recorded in the beginning of May, 2016. We took a day trip to Himeji, since it only takes about 30 minutes with the Shinkansen from Osaka. Himeji is most famous for its magnificent Himeji Castle, both a national treasure and a UNESCO world heritage site.

Kokoen Garden 好古園
We took a walk from Himeji Station to the castle (about 15-20 minute walk), and right next to Himeji Castle is Kokoen Garden, so we decided to stop by there first. I’m glad we did, because it is such a beautiful garden. Even tho there was a light drizzle we still enjoyed it.

But of course the main attraction is the Himeji Castle. We made our way through the hallways and gates, climbed many steep and narrow stair and eventually made it to the top. The topmost floor houses a small shrine and lets visitors peer out in all directions. You can also see the fish-shaped roof ornaments.
On our way back we passed through a shōtengai and stopped for some ramen. ❤️
