Sugar Mill in Old Koloa Town, Kauai
Driving down Hwy 520 you come to the town of Koloa, sometimes called Old Koloa Town. This was the first sugar plantation town in all the islands when Kamehameha III leased the land to Ladd and Company in 1835. The town has many charms and is worth a stop. Across the street, (kitty-corner) from the shops are the remnants of an old sugar mill built over 170 years ago. There you will also find a plaque dedicated to the sugar plantation workers and a good (if somewhat dated) synopsis of sugar history on the island.

Transcript:
Known as the “sunny side” of the island, the south shore of Kaua‘i combines the old fashioned character of Kōloa and the refined resort lifestyle of Poʻipū. Popular for its sugar plantation origins, luxury vacationing, island style shopping, golf courses, restaurants and beaches, the south shore promises endless options for discovery.
“A remarkable gateway to the south shore towns of Kōloa and Poʻipū, the famous tree-tunnel road displays 500 eucalyptus trees that stretch for about 3 miles.”
Beyond the iconic tree tunnel, also known as Maluhia Road, Old Kōloa Town awaits. A key center for the island’s rich sugar cane history, this quaint town is a notable cultural region, where the Old Sugar Mill reflects the legacy of the plantation days. “Built in 1835, this large scale operation spawned the beginning of the largest industry in the state.”
Located in downtown Kōloa, the Old Sugar Mill is at the center of numerous shops, galleries, and dining opportunities.
Entering Poʻipū, famous for its continual sunshine, this area is home to numerous accommodations and luxurious homes accompanied by an abundance of shops and eateries.
The central Poʻipū traffic circle leads to many notable places, like Prince Kuhio Park, whose March 26th birthday is state holiday.
A must-see natural attraction, Spouting Horn Beach Park is the next memorable stop. An incredible place to observe this popular blowhole blast ocean spray into the air, this well-photographed site is more dramatic at high tide.
“Reaching heights of 50 feet, these bursts occur when water rushes under an eroded lava shelf, creating an audible hissing sound.” The lush green plant life of The Garden Island may be viewed in two National Tropical Botanical Garden’s which encompass 352 acres of preserved flora.
Located in the oceanfront village, Poʻipū Beach Park is one of the region’s most popular beaches, with safe waters for swimming, snorkeling, surfing, and family fun.
Brennecke’s Beach neighbors Poʻipū Beach Park, which both feature an abundance of marine life from green sea turtles (honu), monk seals, and humpback whales. Monk seals often sunbathe in the summertime, and in the winter months, whales dance upon the horizon
Marking the beginning of the Māhāʻulepū Heritage Trail, Shipwreck’s Beach is further east and perfect for long beach walks and beautiful sunsets. “Shipwrecks beach is a half-mile stretch of white sand, tucked away in Poʻipū’s friendly south shore resort town with abundant restaurants, shopping, and golf-courses.”
On the way to the unforgettable Māhāʻulepū Beach, you’ll pass the southernmost point of the island. This area encompasses many natural wonders that trace the coastline. Māhāʻulepū Beach has a wild character that is found in the archeological landscape. “This remote beach has strong currents and sharp coral, which makes it dangerous for swimming or snorkeling, but it is a great location for coastal hikes and exploration.”
The town of Kalaheo marks the end of this region, which has great restaurant and shopping potential. With an array of attractions, the sunny south shore of Kaua‘i has much to explore.

The Old Koloa Town. Yetseureoum I bury this little town. It first began in 1835 the sugar cane plantations. Then there is only evidence of yieoon farm about 150 years, is now left with only a few lonely trail. At one time, the planters embraced many immigrants from around the world, the days of the release operation. Out of the city it is left is a structure made of bricks. The mill chimneys of the sugar cane plantations. This does not fit ends meet and the memories disappeared farms. There is a real kyeonen tower. Since 1903 more than 7000 people about three years the opportunity to work with Korean immigrants in Hawaii is the right place all over the island. Woman look familiar, but the appearance of finely represented the mother was followed by half.

The Grove Farm Sugar Cane Train In Kauai!!!
Watch in HD!!!
On August 1, 2014, during the first day of the Wilcox Family reunion in Kauai that I attended, my aunt along with some cousins got to organize an event with the Grove Farm Museum's Historical locomotive that runs on 1,800 feet of the original Lihue Plantation Railroad Right-Of-Way. This was really fun because this is the only authentic sugar plantation steam train experience in the state. In this video, you will see engineer Scott Johnson getting the train ready for it's trip, some rail switching, the train attaching to the sugar cane cars, and parts of the trip, including the train crossing over a stone bridge that is over one hundred years old. Information about some of the history of the locomotives you will see to follow:
Wainiha: This is the locomotive that they used on this trip. This is a Baldwin 0-6-2T that weights 28 tons and was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1915. It was built for the McBryde Sugar Company, and then bought by Grove Farm in 1956. On September 24, 1957, it was the last steam locomotive to haul sugar cane to the mill in Hawaiian Sugar history. It is named Wainiha which is a stream on the North Shore of Kauai. It was restored by Miss Mabel Wilcox in 1975. This locomotive pulled 50 to 60 sugar cane cars alone, and was featured in the 2000 World War II movie To End All Wars.
Paulo: You will see this locomotive a little after the beginning being pushed back to the shed. Paulo is the oldest surviving plantation locomotive in Hawaii today. It was manufactured at the Hohenzollern Works in Dusseldorf, Germany in 1887, and shipped to the Koloa Sugar Company. It was named after Mr. Paul Isenberg who's the owner of Lihue Plantation and a officer of the Koloa Sugar Company. This locomotive weights 10 tons and can pull 50 tons of sugar cane. It was in use until 1920, and then restored by the Grove Farm Museum in 1981. This train also made an appearance in the 2000 film To End All Wars.
Interesting enough, both of these locomotives were almost bought by Disney for $500 a piece, before Miss Mabel Wilcox decided to buy them and restore them to what they are today.
If you would like to ride one of these authentic sugar cane trains, Grove Farm does a monthly fire up every second Thursday of the month. It is free of charge.
Please feel free to like, comment, and/or leave feedback as it is greatly appreciated. Enjoy The Video & Thanks For Watching!!!!

What’s it Going to Take? – Does Hawaiʻi Have the Will and the Resiliency to Build a Better Future?
PBS Hawaiʻi continues to ask What’s It Going to Take?, in an ongoing series of live televised forums seeking to galvanize decision-makers, communities and all of us to make life in Hawaiʻi better. Does Hawaiʻi Have the Will and the Resiliency to Build a Better Future? That’s the subject of our next special edition of INSIGHTS ON PBS HAWAIʻI. The numbers are daunting, even scary. Nearly 50% of Hawaiʻi residents barely get by; 62% of all jobs in in the state pay less than $20 per hour; and the crisis in affordable housing drives many people to leave Hawaiʻi for the Continent. But others stay, and some return, drawn by family, culture and the aloha spirit.

I wanted to look closer to the mysterious scenery I saw in the helicopter. I came to Waimea Canyon called Hawaii's Little Grand Canyon. Waimea Canyon, which means red water in the Hawaiian language, has pierced everywhere in the snow. When you come to Waimea Canyon, you do not know what you're expecting. But as soon as I look at the right perspective, I'll say this. I can not believe this is the world we live in, Thank you so much for luckily having an experience of seeing this, it is so beautiful. Waimea Canyon is a habitat for Hawaiians until Hawaii is merged into the United States. It was space. There are still descendants of indigenous peoples in this observatory, which tells the history and culture of Hawaii. What is the correct pronunciation of 'Hawaii'? Habai. Ha 'Ha' is the breath of life. Guys, what about Bai 'Wai'? Fresh water 'fresh water'. This 'I' is known as the ultimate being or creator. 'Ha' Ha, 'Wai' is 'I', it is all we need to live concisely and correctly. From where do we go wrong? It used to be a lot simpler. Today, unfortunately all of them use aloha to make money only. Even in Luau 'Hawaiian traditional banquet'. When you go to Lua, people will appear and say, 'Aloha!' So people think this is just a greeting, a love, a peace. Aloha has more than 100 meanings on the back. It is important to understand the exact meaning of this word. There are actually two words in 'Aloha'. Alo 'Alo' means 'share together' or 'face to face'. Ha 'Ha' is 'the breath of life'. The combination of these two words means to share the existence and breath of each other. Aloha
