Kolomoki Mounds State Park - Blakely, GA
Kolomoki Mounds were built in A.D. 350-750 by the population of what was then the largest city north of Mexico. The Great Temple Mound is one of the largest American Indian mounds in the eastern United States. The state park is located near Blakely, Georgia.

The Kolomoki Mounds is one of the largest and earliest Woodland period earthwork mound complexes in the Southeastern United States[3] and is the largest in Georgia. Constructed from 350CE to 600CE, the mound complex is located in southwest Georgia, in present-day Early County near the Chattahoochee River.[2]
The mounds were designated in 1964 as a National Historic Landmark in 1964.[2][4] Seven of the eight mounds are protected as part of Kolomoki Mounds State Historic Park.[5]

Camping at Kolomoki Mounds State Park on Labor Day Weekend
Camping Kolomoki Mounds State Park Labor Day Weekend. We went camping over Labor Day weekend at Kolomoki Mounds State Park near Blakely, Georgia. We enjoyed the campground with family and took advantage of the beautiful lake by renting Jon boats for a few hours. We were also able to bank fish in a nice shady area in the late afternoons. Because of the heat (in the 90’s) and my twisted ankle we did not attempt touring the Indian burial mounds on this trip, but hope to go back and check those out in cooler weather. I am adding this campground as one my favorites.
Until next time.... get out there and cast your cares away!

Camping and POTA at Kolomoki Mounds State Park
POTA is Parks On The Air. I had 33 amateur radio contacts to activate the Kolomoki Mounds State Park near Blakely, GA. The camp was plenty large for my antenna and in sight of the lake. My wife and I also visited the park museum for the Indian Mounds.
Kolomoki Mounds, 2009
I just found this footage on my external hard drive. Michael and I went to Kolomoki Mounds in 2009, and I failed to upload our video. I know, I suck.
Hopefully we will be having more of these adventures in the fall. (It's waaaay too hot down here to do any hiking right now)
Aerial View Of Kolomoki Mounds, Georgia - Built 1500 Years Ago
Read the full story here:
Let’s take a look at the aerial view of Kolomoki Mounds in Georgia. This site has a total of 8 mounds and it is the largest Mound complex in this state. It covers about 300 acres of land. The site is so large, my quadcopter cannot cover all the mounds. I am only gonna show 2 of them, the largest and the most important ones. Archaeologists estimate these mounds were constructed from 350CE to 600CE.
This is the biggest mound in the complex and is called the Temple mound. It is 56 feet tall;at the base it is 325 feet wide and 200 feet long. In the center, you can see the stairway. The top of the mound was carefully built into a flat area; it would be perfect for helicopters to land here today.
It is hard not to think of Mayan Pyramids like Chichen Itza and Palenque because they are also flat topped pyramids, and this mound could have had a large wooden structure on top of it. Believe it or not, the Mayas believe that their ancestors came from the north. So, you can’t help but think – is there a connection between Mound Builders and the Mayas?
Some archeologists theorize that Kolomokiwas the center of population and activity of a large province that runs through many states today. This could have even been the capital of the mound builder kingdom.
The large rectangular area in front of the temple mound is called the Plaza. It could have been used for a variety of purposes. Evidence of a large pole set in a deep pit was found, which shows the mound builders played some kind of a ball game and used it as a goal post. Other Native American tribes improved this in the later centuries into games like Chunkey.
The second largest mound at the Kolomoki complex is this conical mound, commonly referred to as Mound D. The conical mound is 20 feet tall, and has a diameter of one hundred feet. This is positioned at the exact center of the Kolomoki site.
There are many different types of mounds, for example effigy mounds with animal shapes, temple mounds, with tall, flat platforms, but mounds like these just look like a cone. These are usually burial mounds. Archeologists discovered 77 skeletons here, and locals say at least a dozen of them were giants over 7 feet tall.
What looks like a pile of dirt fooled people for a long time.
Archeologists were surprised when they excavated this mound and realized it is the most elaborately constructed mound. Beneath the dirt, is a house like structure with multiple floors built with perfectly arranged wooden logs. The logs were placed upright and mounded with dirt to support them. After placing the dead inside this log house, it was then covered with rocks. Layering of many burials, cremations and log scaffolding continued for several layers, including a mass cremation at the top.
One surprising fact is that all the skulls of the mound builders faceddirectly to the east. The mounds and the mound builders were somehow sending a message to the Gods.
These mounds themselves have a strange connection to astronomical events. For example, 3 mounds form the central axis of the site, and align perfectly with the sun at the spring equinox. Two other mounds are aligned with the sun at the summer solstice. This casts a lot of doubt to the standard idea that the Mound Builders could not even read or write. How did they come up with such a large complex with perfect astronomical alignments without reading or writing?
Planning of the site requires great vision and remember we are talking about 1500 years ago. It is built on an elevated land surrounded by 3 sides of water. The creeks and lake would not only offer supplies of fresh water, but it would also act as a defense mechanism against intruders. In addition to this, there used to be a protective earthen wall that ran all around the complex, but this wall has been plowed down by early European settlers.
The Etowah mounds, which is about 200 miles away is similar in so many of these features. If you get a chance, don’t forget to visit this historic landmark. I am Praveen Mohan; I hope this video was of some value to you. Please subscribe and I’ll talk to you soon.

Lost Worlds: Georgia| Part 7: Ocmulgee Indian Mounds
In America's deep South, in the shadow of the modern metropolis of Atlanta, Georgia lies the remnants of Native American civilizations thousands of years old. This is an old Indian Mound sight believed to have been constructed about 1500 years ago
Aerial View Of Etowah Indian Mounds, Georgia
Let’s take a look at the aerial view of Etowah Mounds in Georgia. You are looking at the tallest mound which is 63 feet tall, taller than a 6 story building and covers more than 3 acres of land. I like to call this the great pyramid of Georgia because it does resemble many of the Mayan Pyramids with a flat top. Archaeologists guesstimate that this was built about a 1000 years ago. But they have also found pottery from 200 B.C to 600 A.D, which means that this site can even be more than 2000 years old.
In a minute, you’ll see other mounds as well because this site stretches over 54 acres . You can see the modern stairway, but even before that, the mound builders had built a solid stairway some of which is still underneath what you see. And this is the panoramic view that the mound builders could see from up top. There are three small mounds, but you can’t see them because they have been nearly plowed down. At the top, there is a large flat area, it was obviously used for some valuable purpose but nobody knows what it was used for.
To the left, you can see a ramp, in the shape of a giant Z, I will explain this in a minute. You can see a smaller rectangular mound which is 10 feet tall and now to the left you can see another circular mound which is 25 feet tall.
My quadcopter has to fly about 600 feet to cover all the three mounds in one frame.
And flying about a thousand feet above the ground, you can see the river on the left. Almost all the mounds in the U.S are built near rivers or at least creeks. This is the Z shaped ramp I was talking about. They might have created this to move heavy material to the top of the pyramid. This is the most practical, logical way to think about this. I actually walked up on this ramp. Large buildings could have been built on top of the mound and the ramp would have been crucial for that. In 2005, experts used magnetometers and announced that a total of 140 buildings existed on the site. This means that they could detect walls of baked bricks and magnetic stones such as basalt and granite. And you can see the staging area in the middle which is large enough to turn an object and move in the opposite direction.
So, what is so mysterious about the Etowah Mounds? Everything actually, we don’t know who built them, why or when. On top of that, giant skeletons were found right under the mounds confirming that giant mound builders built these fabulous structures. The artifacts found here are also very mysterious - Bird Men, figures with horns and unusually large teeth.
Here is the moat that was created around the mounds, possibly for protection. Very large, and not built as a circle but meanders around like a snake.
There you can see the mounds and the moat goes all around, just like a medieval castle. And you can see that there is no moat, right in front of the temple mound. Perfect way to regulate traffic. This moat is about 8 feet deep and they probably even used boats, because canoes have been found .
