Komatsu: Transform Mining 2018
Fourteen startups comprised of fifty innovators and Komatsu senior executives from Japan, USA and Australia came together at co-working and tech hub River City Labs in Fortitude Valley, Queensland, Australia from 23 – 25 February 2018 to take part in a mining technology hackathon with a twist – Komatsu: Transform Mining.
On Friday night, startups pitched their existing technologies to Komatsu, and then over the weekend, the entrepreneurs worked closely with Komatsu mentors and personnel from across the business, who offered deep insights into their current operations, technology gaps, implementation, integration, and future vision, with a view to finding the most accelerated path to direct collaboration. $10,000 cash, $6,000 credits and 3 Komatsu site visits were awarded at the end of the 54 hour open innovation event.

BackInJapan: Asakusa
After arriving in Asakusa-bashi St. and walking for 40 mins, getting lost and asking for directions. I finally make it to Asakusa! It's similar to Insadong in Seoul in that there are many tourist, souvenirs and fun street food. It's really just fun to walk around and look at all the things they sell. I can't even begin to name all the fun things they have!
Afterwards I walk to Sky Tree! The new giant tower in Tokyo. Below there is a shopping center to take all your money and they sell exclusive snacks and items about Sky Tree. The part of the tower I went to was 350m (What is that in American English?) It was such a nice view of the entire city. If you paid more you could go up even higher! But I didn't because it was already $20 just to go up the where I was. Shit is not cheap. But Beautiful!
Hostel Komatsu Ueno Station
The Hostel Komatsu Ueno Station is a 5 minute drive to Tokyo Dome and University of Tokyo, and less than a 10 minute drive to Tokyo International Forum, Science Museum and Tokyo Imperial Palace. National Theatre of Japan is a short drive from the hostel. Tokyo city centre is within a 20 minute drive. The location of the hostel allows guests to easily reach many tourist attractions on foot. Haneda Airport (HND) is within a 40 minute drive from the hostel. Shops, bars and entertainment are all within easy walking distance from the hostel.

Crown Prince and Princess of Denmark visit Kanazawa and Funabashi
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Denmark and Japan and various celebratory events are taking place throughout Japan. On October 9 and 10, Their Royal Highnesses the Crown Prince and Crown Princess of Denmark visited Kanazawa and Funabashi. Kanazawa is an old castle town and features beautifully preserved old streets and buildings. In Kanazawa, the royal couple visited one of Japan’s three most-famous gardens, Kenroku-en, and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary art. In Funabashi the Crown Princess visited the Funabashi H. C. Andersen Park, which was named after world-famous Danish children’s author Hans Christian Andersen. The park is one of the popular sightseeing destinations for many overseas visitors.

JAPAN: TOKYO: LOVEGETY IS ELECTRONIC ANSWER FOR LONELY HEARTS
Japanese/Nat
Lonely hearts are prowling the streets of Japan, armed not with romantic poems or sultry looks but with the ultimate matchmaking tool of the electronic age - the Lovegety.
The toy's makers - and the 400-thousand people in search of love who have bought one already - are hoping it will open the door to romance.
So put away the Love Potion Number Nine and pick up a love beeper instead.
The hustle and bustle of Tokyo, a city of more than 25 (m) million people, can seem daunting to the timid in search of love.
But a new device hopes to solve the most difficult task of finding love - meeting the right person.
The Lovegety - or love beeper - is a rather straightforward mix of love and get and comes in the form of an oval disc that fits in your hand.
The gizmo retails for the equivalent of 22 U-S dollars and is developed by Erfolg - a small company that makes modems.
It's been overwhelmed by the runaway success of the Lovegety since its release in February - currently there is a backlog for more than 200-thousand units.
Erfolg - which means success in German - has now boosted production and expects annual revenues to increase sevenfold to 15 (m) million U-S dollars.
The Lovegety comes in male and female versions and can pick up signals from 15 feet (about five metres) away.
It has three settings for favourite activities: karaoke for romantic crooners, chat for those who want to talk and friends for something, well, more intimate.
When someone carrying a Lovegety of the opposite sex comes into range, the two machines beep or flash.
Then it is up to the would-be lovers to seek each other out and try to match Lovegety programme modes - or run the other way.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
Are you the one who has Lovegety? is a sentence that gives a man and a woman a chance to start communicating. If the person who has the Lovegety is a good looking one, you are lucky. If not, well, you would say: 'I am sorry. I am busy'.
SUPER CAPTION: Takeya Takafuji, executive planning director Erfolg
A flashing green light means a match in interests, while red means there's a Lovegety next to you, but you've got the wrong setting.
The settings can be changed any time - and the timid can keep the beeper off so only the lights will flash.
UPSOUND: (Japanese)
Wow, it is flashing. Someone's Lovegety is set for 'Karaoke'.
SUPER CAPTION: Yuji Kitano, High School student
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
I do not have many friends. So, I am going to set for friends'.
SUPER CAPTION: Takayuki Morimoto, High School Student
Cynics might say the Lovegety is just another gizmo out of the land of gadgets.
But this young man did found love - in less than a week.
Strolling the pavement, his Lovegety flashed on the Karaoke setting - and it was a bleep at first sight.
SOUNDBITE: (Japanese)
I am not the type of person who dares to go up to the girls and start talking. When I have this 'Lovegety', it is easier to talk to people. I am satisfied.
SUPER CAPTION: Komatsu Mokoto, Young man who found his love only in one week after buying Lovegety
Erfolg is planning to introduce an upgraded version of the Lovegety in August - offering more choices, such as movie, drink and dinner.
