The grassland looks spectacular. Car park fee = 410yen whole day with unlimited entrance. Horse riding available (~1500yen per person per ride). Restaurants, cafes and a mushroom are located in this area.

阿蘇山 (Mt. ASO)
阿蘇山擁有全世界最大的破火山口，是日本最大的複式火山，也是世界上唯一一座可以近距離觀賞火山口的活火山。在 30 萬年前至 9 萬年前，阿蘇山共有 4 次的爆發，並形成了現在的巨大火山臼地形，整個火山臼的東西約 18 公里寬，南北約 25 公里寬，中央排列著高岳、中岳、根子岳、杵島岳、烏帽子岳五個活火山，共稱為阿蘇五岳或阿蘇山。五岳當中，中岳最為壯觀及馳名，至今中岳火口依然是一座活動頻繁的活火山，火山口南北長大約 1 公里、東西寬 400 公尺、周長達 4 公里，噴出的熔岩溫度高達 1000 ~ 1200 度。火山沒有活動時所積聚的雨水會被熱至 50 ~ 80 度。火口池呈現青綠色，這是由於周圍的岩石溶化出來的鐵 (綠色) 和銅 (藍色) 的顏色所造成。為監視阿蘇山火山活動，中岳火口設置了攝錄機和地震儀，以進行 24 小時的監控和觀測。

草千里 (Kusasenri)
草千里是一片夾在火山群間淺四角形的寬闊大草原，直徑長達１公里的草千里延伸至烏帽子岳的北麓，中央有 2 個美麗而寧靜的大水池，廣大草原上常有放牧的牛馬群，整個草千里展現出一幅天寬地廣的恬靜美景，令人忘卻所有煩惱，一年四季吸引很多遊客前來觀光。

Not many places you can peer down a live volcano. Mount Aso is Japan's biggest active volcano and like being on the moon.

Mt. Aso or Aso-san is one of Kyushu's most popular places - in addition to the crater spewing out steam and poisonous sulfuric gases, there is Kusasenri, the bottom of a mammoth old crater that offers horseback riding, and Komezuka, an 80m hill and once a volcano itself.
The caldera is one of the world's largest (450 sq. km) and most active 90,000-300,000 years ago. Its lava once flowed over half of the whole island of Kyushu. Even today, you can still see the remains of the violent activity. And while huge molten rocks may not be raining down on you, the large numbers of emergency concrete bunkers are there for a good reason.
This footage was taken just before the late spring rains turn most of the lower area a huge emerald green. Seeing the volcano is always hit-and-miss...one day it's open, the next it may be closed due to higher poisonous gas emissions. ALWAYS check before going to see if it's open (and hope in transit it stays open).

UPDATE: After 4 years, the Mt. Aso crater has been opened again, but always check the volcano status before going to avoid a wasted trip. Recently there has been some activity prompting its closure again.

Largest Active Volcano in Japan - Mount Aso (Aso Crater, Kusasenri) Video Series !

Mount Aso (Aso Crater) is famous for a live volcano which is located in Kumamoto, Japan. This is the world’s most famous active volcano as it is among the largest volcanoes in the world. The peak is 1,592 from the sea level and measuring 18 km east-west and 25 km north-south.

도야마현의 중심지 도야마시는 인구 42만 명의 작은 도시지만 소득수준은 전국에서 5등 안에 드는 곳이다. 도야마역은 신, 구형 시내전차와 지방철도 신칸센이 연결되어 다양한 기차를 볼 수가 있다. 나는 지방철도를 타고 첫 번째 여행지로 갔다. 시내를 벗어나면 바로 3천 미터의 높은 봉우리들이 보인다. 한 시간을 달려 일본의 알프스 다테야마 연봉 관광의 시작점인 다테야마역에 도착했다. 예상보다 많은 관광객이 보여 역 근처에 있는 폭포부터 가 보기로 했다. 멀리 두 줄기 폭포가 보인다. 왼쪽의 쇼묘폭포는 350미터 낙차로 떨어지는 물소리가 염불 외는 소리로 들린다 해서 이름 붙여졌다. 마침 폭포에 걸린 무지개를 취재하러 온 지역 방송국 촬영팀을 만났다. ‘2시’와 ‘무지개’ 모두 ‘니지’로 발음되는 것을 이용해 리포트 하는 것이 재미있어 나도 부탁을 해보았다. “쇼묘폭포에 오시려면 오후 2시가 좋습니다. 왜냐하면 2시에 무지개가 보일지도 모르니까요. 기다리고 있을게요.” 무지개뿐 아니라 평소 보기 힘든 오른쪽의 폭포도 볼 수 있었다. “왼쪽 쇼묘폭포는 일 년 내내 있습니다. 오른쪽 한노키폭포는 비가 많이 내리는 계절이 아니면 나타나지 않습니다. 그런데 오늘은 이렇게 양쪽 다 아름답게 흐르고 있는데 굉장히 보기 드문 일입니다.” 두 개의 폭포가 떨어지는 모습은 눈이 녹기 시작하는 봄과 큰비가 내린 뒤에만 볼 수 있다. 무지개처럼 아무 때나 나타나지 않는 한노키 폭포의 낙차는 무려 500미터나 된다. “굉장히 예뻐요 근처에 있으면 물보라, 음이온이 많이 전해지는 것 같아서 기분이 좋아요” 한노키폭포는 아시아에서도 제일 낙차가 큰 폭포이지만 연중 물이 흐르지는 않기 때문에 쇼묘폭포를 일본 최고 폭포라고 한다.
