Kommos UCD_VirtualReconstructions1-3Final
Kommos Conservancy Virtual reConstruction Project Manager Alexander Assaf under Professor Kat Vlahos of the University of Colorado - Denver Architecture have employed the talents of Keith Schmelzer, Joe Wynn and Catherine Brown to produce a first phase of virtual reconstructions of the Kommos archaeological site. Beginning with the monumental Building T with its Minoan Stoas, Building T, a series of six ship sheds galleries, plus a Hellenistic period temple complex. Assaf has assembled them in a short six minute video with drawings by excavation architect Giuliana Bianco.
Kommos exotic beach, Matala - Crete island | Greece, land of myths
Kommos (or Komos) is located 66km southwest of Heraklion, just 2km north of Matala and close the village Pitsidia. It is actually the southernmost and the most isolated part of the long beachfront of Messara Bay. Kommos was once the port of Phaestus; you can still see the ruins of the old port of Kommos on the beach. You can access Kommos by driving in the road heading to Matala, till you see a sign to Kommos near Pitsidia.
The entire beachfront of Messara is exposed to westerly winds, which mostly blow in the area. Thus, caution is needed because the seabed in some places is rocky. The protected loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) lay their eggs in the sand of the beach, from May to September.
The northern part of Kommos, Potamos or Potamoserma, is a favorite destination for naturists, since the times when hundreds of hippies flooded the area. There are only a few tamarisk trees around, not buildings, because Kommos is a protected archaeological area and building is restricted. Next to the archaeological site, on the south, there is an organized beach with umbrellas, sun beds, toilet, showers, a canteen and a lifeguard. All around there are sand dunes where you can admire the white lilies of sand, which sign the end of the summer. If you want to find a place to stay overnight or to eat, you can walk to the nearby Kalamaki, or drive to Pitsidia and Matala.
The views to Paximadia islets is stunning, especially during sunset. Just opposite the archaeological site, 300m in the sea, you will see a beautiful big rock, which the locals call Volakas. Volakas could not be absent from the Greek myths. Locals say that the stone is the top of the boulder that the blinded Cyclope Polyphemus threw against the ship of Odysseus in order not to escape. This was after Odysseus, with his companions, escaped from Polyphemus’ cave
The place to be for a great nature experience, free camping & beautiful hippie summer...!
It is a lengthy stretch - over 2km long and up to 40m wide - of deep golden sand backed by natural dunes and cliffs topped with tamarisk trees, which is also a paradise for people swimming with no suits on and most likely will become an official natur-_ist beach. At the southern end is the Kommos taverna, a short walk away from the famous archaeological site. The lifeguard is to be found here, near the umbrellas and sunbeds, as well as toilets and a shower. Towards the northern end of the beach the sea bed is rock shelf, but at the taverna end it is sandy. The sand quality is good and the beach is very clean; if you enjoy snorkelling there are many fish to be seen.
The excavation of a major Bronze Age site has been ongoing at Kommos since 1976. Kommos first attracted the attention of archaeologists in 1924, when the famous excavator of Knossos, Arthur Evans, heard of large storage vessels being found there. Kommos was in fact a major port, with monumental Minoan palatial buildings, massive stone storage complexes, and a Minoan town (ca. 1800-1200 B.C.). Post-Minoan remains include a Greek Sanctuary that was active until the Early Roman period, when the site was abandoned (ca. A.D. 200). The artefacts discovered there come from as far away as Cyprus, Egypt, and Sardinia.
Kommos is also widely considered to be the best no-swimming suit beach on Crete; Captain Barefoot thought it was wonderful and gives it a rating of 96%. The naturist section of this beach starts just north of the archaeological ruins and is more than half a kilometre long. There is some shade under trees at the back of the beach. There is plenty of room for everyone, even at weekends, and for your further enjoyment, can bring you delicious homemade cakes and coffee while you sit in the sand and watch the waves.

Ride & Fly from Matala to Komos Beach on Crete, Greece.
Music track: Summer on Crete by Kaffimusic (myself).
TIP OF THE DAY:
If you ever want to rent a bike on Crete (or Greece anywhere), either take an off road bike or try to get one of those. They are perfect for the conditions (bad roads) there, comfortably to ride, even with 2 persons and have incredible low fuel consumption. Most locals use them, they know why. Don´t take a scooter, they are crap. Just for tourists that don´t know. Drive carefully - it might be a good idea to have some experience.
