Komyozenji is a Zen temple that is located just south of Dazaifu's famous Tenmangu Shrine. Komyozenji's main attraction is its beautiful Japanese gardens.

This is Dazaifu, a very popular tourist attraction in Fukuoka, Japan. In this area, there is a very popular shrine, Tenman-gū, that is definitely worth a visit! The streets leading up to the shrine are full of touristy shops and interesting sights. In there area there are also a few other temples and shrines, including a Zen garden (shown here) and also a Museum. If you are in Fukuoka, definitely check it out!

Komyozenji Temple is located in the south of Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, famous for the name of Kokedera. A garden is worth seeing. Autumn leaves can also be enjoyed in autumn.

A temple garden in Dazaifu, Japan
Some temple have garden. This is a temple garden in Dazaifu.
Shofuku-ji Temple, Fukuoka ● 聖福寺
► Shofuku-ji Temple is located in Gion-area of Hakata, Fukuoka.
(Only one stop by Kuko Subway Line from Hakata Station.)
It was founded in 1195, making it the oldest Zen Temple in Japan.
The center of the mainbulding houses 3 golden buddha statues, each approx. 3½
meters tall.
The place is well worth a visit if in Fukuoka; It's not overrun by tourists, and the templeground itself is most pleasent, with small ponds and trees, making it a small oasis in the middle of Fukuoka.

Kōmyōzen-ji (光明禅寺) is a Zen temple in Dazaifu, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It was founded by Tetsugyū Enshin of the Tōfuku-ji Rinzai school in 1273. Kōmyōzen-ji is celebrated for its karesansui garden, the only example in Kyushu.

The Zen Garden at Komyozen-Ji
Is there a name in English for this kind of rain? asked my Japanese host. Torrential I replied. Good, torrential is perfect for visiting the Komyozen-Ji Zen garden. He was right. The garden, which is viewed from a terrace behind the Komyozen-Ji temple is best seen when the rain is dripping from the trees onto the mossy banks. It is without a doubt the most perfect, peaceful Japanese garden I've ever seen.
Although the garden is only yards away from the crowds of the temples of Dazaifu it is perfectly peaceful. And although the setting is a Budhist temple in my eyes this is a shrine to the Slow Life. This video captures a little of the atmosphere which we encountered on this rainy day. In the background is the occasional sound of a bell and the rhythmic beating of a drum, which puzzled me until I came across a Budhist service being held in the temple, a little of which is shown at the end of the video.

This is the oldest Zen temple in Japan, it was founded by monk Eisai.
