Konark Sun Temple Detail !!Odisha !! 365 Travel Trip !!
365 Travel TripKonark Sun Temple Detail. Sun Temple is a 13th-century CE sun temple at Konark about 35 kilometres northeast from Puri on the coastline of Odisha, India. The temple is attributed to king Narasingha deva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty about 1250 CE.
Dedicated to the Hindu 'god Surya, what remains of the temple complex has the appearance of a 100-foot (30 m) high chariot with immense wheels and horses, all carved from stone. Once over 200 feet (61 m) high, much of the temple is now in ruins, in particular the large shikara tower over the sanctuary; at one time this rose much higher than the mandapa that remains. The structures and elements that have survived are famed for their intricate artwork, iconography, and themes, including erotic kama and mithuna scenes. Also called the Surya Devalaya, it is a classic illustration of the Odisha style of Architecture or Kalinga Architecture .
The cause of the destruction of the Konark temple is unclear and remains a source of controversy. Theories range from natural damage to deliberate destruction of the temple in the course of being sacked several times by Muslim armies between the 15th and 17th centuries. This temple was called the Black Pagoda in European sailor accounts as early as 1676 because its great tower appeared black. Similarly, the Jagannath Temple in Puri was called the White Pagoda. Both temples served as important landmarks for sailors in the Bay of Bengal. The temple that exists today was partially restored by the conservation efforts of British India-era archaeological teams. Declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 1984, it remains a major pilgrimage site for Hindus, who gather here every year for the Chandrabhaga Mela around the month of February. The name Konark derives from the combination of the Sanskrit words Kona (corner or angle) and Arka (the sun). The context of the term Kona is unclear, but probably refers to the southeast location of this temple either within a larger temple complex or in relation to other sun temples on the subcontinent. The Arka refers to the Hindu sun god Surya.

Konark Sun Temple ???????? India
The temple was originally built at the mouth of the river Chandrabhaga, but the waterline has receded since then. The temple has been built in the form of a giant ornamented chariot of the Sun god, Surya. It has twelve pairs of elaborately carved stone wheels some of which are 3 meters wide and is pulled by seven pairs of horses. The temple follows the traditional style of Kalinga architecture. It is carefully oriented towards the east so that the first rays of sunrise strikes the principal entrance. The temple is built from Khondalite rocks. (from wikipedia)

Konark Sun Temple Is NOT a Hindu Temple

Hey guys, in this video, we are gonna look at why the Konark Sun Temple was really built and by the end of this video, you can decide if it is a Hindu temple at all.
Imagine that you are child who is only 5 years old and your parents have taken you to the Konark Sun Temple. This is what you would see in this temple. At the lowest level of the temple, you will see what children are naturally interested in: Animals. There are exquisite carvings of various animals and their behaviors. For example, you see how baby elephants hang around their mothers. How monkeys behave. Some are even funny, like today’s cartoon network. Here you can see how human beings use tamed elephants to capture a wild elephant. This is a cage, and you can see how the sculptor had brilliantly carved the elephant inside the cage. This was ancient India’s animal planet. But this temple doesn’t stop there, I am gonna show you how Konark temple was built as an encyclopedia, as a University which teaches various subjects for all age groups. I have realized that you can divide this temple into many different subjects according to its height.
The first 2 feet are carved for small children below 5 years, and when you reach the ages between 6 to 10, you are going to see things like dancing, singing and playing musical instruments. The temple holds an enormous amount of carvings about music and dancing. This is odyssey, the traditional dance of the region. There are 128 postures of traditional Indian dance, carved in this temple. If you are tough kid, you can also see martial arts like boxing and wrestling. Of course, life would be no fun without games. So you can learn games like the tug of war as well.
The third level, fit for ages between 11 and 15 has enormous scientific information, specifically astronomy. This wheel is a sundial that can tell the accurate time, precisely down to a minute! The temple, dedicated to the Sun God Surya is a giant symbolic representation of how the Sun works. The temple is shaped as a chariot with 24 wheels representing 24 hours of the day, featuring 3 sun gods – the morning sun with a happy face, the somber noon sun and the evening sun with a sad face. But all experts and commoners have missed something very important. What are these weird animals carved on either side of the chariot? They are horses in an extremely disintegrated state, they were disfigured by foreign invaders. There are a total of 7 horses which pull the chariot of the sun.
Now, Why is the chariot being pulled by 7 horses? Some say, just like the 24 wheels represent 24 hours of the day, the 7 horses represent 7 days of the week. But this is not true. Astronomers agree that the 7 days of the week are not connected to the Sun at all, and some civilizations even had 8 day weeks, because it is not relevant to the movement of the sun and the earth. So, why is the chariot of the Sun god being pulled by 7 horses?
If you talk to the elderly people in this area, they reveal some intriguing information. They say that each of the 7 horses was painted with a different color of the rainbow. So, this horse was probably painted with violet, this one with indigo, and so on. Now, we know that Isaac Newton discovered that sun light is not white, but made of 7 different colors. This was a startling discovery back then, and even now it is hard to accept that sunlight is actually made of 7 different colors. Newton discovered this in 1600s, but this temple was built nearly 400 years before Newton, so how did the ancient builders know that the Sun light was actually made of different colors? More importantly, why aren’t historians recording this in their books?

Konark Sun Temple, also called Konarak Sun Temple and Surya Deula, is a 13th-century CE Sun Temple at Konark about 35 kilometres (22 mi) northeast from Puri on the coastline of Odisha, India. The temple is attributed to king Narasimhadeva I of Eastern Ganga Dynasty about 1250 CE.

750 Year Old Sundial at Konark, India - Moondial too?

Let's take a look at the accuracy of the Sundial at Konark Sun temple in India built in 1250 A.D. People still use it today to tell time. Let me show you a short clip of a tour guide figuring out the time and then I will explain how this sundial works.
As you can see, the sundial is pretty accurate and people are amazed by it. Let's take a closer look and see how it works. The sundial has 8 major spokes that divide 24 hours into 8 equal parts, which means that the time between two major spokes is 3 hours. There are 8 minor spokes as well. Each minor spoke runs exactly in the middle of 2 major spokes. This means that the minor spoke divides the 3 hours in half, so the time between a major spoke and a minor spoke is an hour and half or 90 minutes.
Now, at the edge of the wheel, you can see a lot of beads. If you observe carefully, you can see that there are 30 beads between a minor and a major spoke. So, the 90 minutes are further divided by 30 beads. This means that each bead carries a value of 3 minutes. The beads are large enough, so you can also see if the shadow falls in the center of the bead or on one of the ends of the bead. This way we can further calculate time accurately to the minute.
The sundial shows time in an anti-clockwise fashion. At the top, the major spoke stands for midnight and this spoke stands for 3 A.M and this one for 6 A.M and so on. When I place a finger or a pen at the tail of the animal in the axle, the shadow will fall on the edge of the wheel. Now, I simply note the bead where the shadow falls. Using the math we did before, I can easily tell the current time precisely down to the minute. Imagine how much time and coordination would have happened between the astronomers, engineers and sculptors to create something like this 750 years ago.
Now if you are observing closely, you would have 2 questions in your mind right now. The first question would be, what happens when the sun moves from east to west. Since the wheel is carved on a wall, the sun would not shine on this wheel at all. How can we tell time in the afternoons? Now, the Konark temple has another wheel or sundial, located on the west side of the temple as well. You can just use the other sundial that will work perfectly from afternoon, until sunset.
This is the second and the most interesting question. How do you tell time after sunset? There would be no sun, and hence no shadows from sunset till the next morning's sunrise. After all, we have 2 sundials in the temple which work only when the sun shines. To this question, I want to point out that the Konark temple does not have just 2 wheels like this. The temple has a total of 24 wheels, all accurately carved just like the sundials. Have you heard of the Moondial? Do you know that the moondials can work just like sun dials during night time? What if the other wheels in the temple could be used as moondials?
Many people think that the other 22 wheels were carved for decorative or religious purposes and do not have an actual use. This is what people thought about the 2 sundials as well. Believe it or not, people thought that all the 24 wheels were just carved for beauty and as Hindu symbols. About 100 years ago, it became known that this was a sundial when an old yogi was seen calculating time secretly. Apparently selected people were using these wheels for generations and for 650 years no one else knew about it. They say that when they asked him about the purpose of the other 22 wheels, the yogi refused to talk and simply walked away.
And our knowledge of just these 2 sundials themselves is actually very limited. You can see how there are multiple circles of beads. You can see carvings and markings all over these sundials, and we don't the meaning of most of them. For example, this carving on a major spoke has exactly 60 beads. Notice how in some carving you can see leaves and flowers which may mean Spring or Summer. Notice how in some carvings you can see lemurs mating, which only happens during winter. So, these sundials could have even been used as an almanac for a variety of different things. Now you can understand how limited our knowledge is about the rest of the 22 wheels.
Notice that there are clues on these wheels that people have overlooked for centuries. Notice how a woman wakes up and looks at a mirror in the morning. Notice how she is stretching, being tired and ready to go to sleep. And you can also see that she is engaging in sexual activity during night. For centuries, people have ignored these hints and thought that these were carvings of Hindu Goddesses.
