Kondana caves Karjat are some of the rock cut Buddhist caves situated in the Maharashtra.
There are total 16 caves at Kondane which dates back to the 1st century BC.
Many people gives visit to this beautiful caves every year.
Location: 15 kms from Karjat, Kondivade-Thakurwadi Village, Raigad District, Maharashtra, India.
Kondana Caves Karjat or Kondane Caves is a group of Buddhist caves located in Karjat region of Maharashtra.
The location of these caves is on the same mountain of Rajmachi Fort.
While travelling from Karjat, you will first come across Kondivade village & then Thakurwadi village.
These are famous ancient Buddhist caves.
This is a group of total 16 Buddhist caves where Buddhist monks used to stay during the monsoon months.
Some of the Kondane caves have stone carved beds for resting. The last cave has water storage.
During the rainy season, many beautiful waterfalls originate above caves which are amazing!
The front entrance and floor of the caves were damaged in early 1900 due to an earthquake.
Lots of tourists visit this place to see these old age caves and to perform the trek throughout the year.
You can get magnificent views of the surrounding Sahyadri mountain ranges while trekking to these caves.
During monsoon period, this region wears a lush green blanket which looks spectacular!

Kondana or Kondane caves (Lenya) are ancient Buddhist caves situated in Kondiwade village of Karjat. Its a government preserved archeological monument and now being reconstructed.
A very good place to visit on weekends as it is one of the nearest tourist spots from Mumbai & Lonavala.

Kondana caves are ancient Buddhist caves situated near Kondiwade village in Karjat region of Maharashtra. Kondiwade village is the nearest village to these caves which is accessible by road. This place is good for one-day excursion. Although the path leading upto the caves is quite easy to walk on, the October heat exhausted us. (Tip: Choose a cooler season to visit.) We found couple of small streams or waterfalls along the way. The caves are currently undergoing restoration work & so certain areas are off limit. Though right now the caves are not in perfect condition its history & magnificence is definitely thought provoking & a humbling experience. If you are someone who is interested in local history do visit these caves once.

Kondana, 33 km north of Lonavala and 16 km nrth west of Karla Caves. This cave group has 16 Buddhist caves. The caves were excavated in first century B.C. With its gradual terrain, this trekroute is quite easily traversed and is the perfect place to begin your journey as a trekker. Kondane Information:
Kondane is a village in Pune district of Maharashtra. The village is situated near Karjat, surrounded by six caves. This cave was created in the second century BC. There is a chaityagory, seven viharas and two caves in Kondane Lake. There were painted paintings on the roofs of the Vaharan Voorandi. These pictures appear to be mostly extinct.

How To Reach:

Karjat has situated just 68 kms away from Mumbai so you can easily reach karjat by trains. After reaching karjat station, ask for Shree Ram Bridge from where 8 seater auto-rickshaws (Tum-Tum) are available up to Kondivade Village & Thakurwadi Village. These tum-tums will cost you around Rs.30/- per seat. Auto-Rickshaws will take you up to the base village-Kondivade, from the base village, it is an easy one-hour trek till Kondana caves karjat.

Kondana Caves are located in small village, Kondana, 33 km north of Lonavala and 16 km northwest of Karla Caves. This cave group has 16 Buddhist caves. The caves were excavated in first century B.C. The cave only one inscription on the front of the Chaitya, which gives information about donors.

Kondana Caves

Kondana Caves is located in a village called Kondana. A lovely drive from Mumbai of around 2:30 will take you there. The caves were built in 16th Century by the Buddhist.

The trek is challenging and fun at the same time. Walking on slippery mountain, crossing flowing streams , walking through the dense forest and finally reaching to a beautiful place is a treat.

The natural waterfall and the surrounding is just unreal. Its a nice day trip with family and friends.

About four miles from the Karjat station, on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, and at the base of the old hill fort of Rajmachi, is the Kondane group of caves, first brought to notice in the 19th century by Vishnu Sastri, and soon after visited by Mr. Law, then collector of Thana. They are in the face of a steep scarp, and quite hidden from view by the thick forest in front of them. Water trickles down over the face of the rock above them during a considerable part even of the dry season, and has greatly injured them. So much so indeed that it is now difficult to determine whether they or the caves at Bhaja Caves are the earliest. They must be nearly, if not quite contemporary, and as they must have taken some time to excavate, their dates may overlap to some extent. The Vihara at Kondane certainly looks more modern, while the Chaitya, which is very similar in plan and dimensions to that at Bhaja, is so much ruined that it is impossible now to decide which may have been first completed
