Pt. ② Master Masahiko Kimura’s Bonsai Garden 2019
Master Kimura's work is among the most famous and important of contemporary Bonsai in Japan. His new and radical approach to how he styled Bonsai was first seen as breaking with (too) many traditions, but soon he was widely recognized and respected.
His garden is like a museum and anyone interested in Japanese Bonsai will recognize at least half his collection from magazines and websites. Needless to say, this is one garden you should not miss! Masahiko Kimura specialized in Shimpaku Junipers and his most famous and award winning trees are mostly of this species. In the garden you will find a lot of pine trees as well, but only very few deciduous trees. Many of the current and upcoming Bonsai experts in Europe and the USA were apprentices at mr. Kimura, including Ryan Neil.
Taishakuten Temple and Suikeien Garden (Shibamata, Tokyo)
Shibamata Taishakuten, formally known as Kyoei-zan Daikyoji, is a beautiful and unique Buddhist temple founded in 1629. It is located right at the end of the Shibamata Sando shopping street and it is about 10 km northeast of Asakusa. In 2009 the temple was named in the 100 Landscapes of Japan. The main buildings such as the main gate and the temple have no coloration. Instead, they have many beautifully carved decorations. On the outside walls of the inner temple there are ten panels whose carvings are all based on scenes of the Lotus Sutra each telling a different story. You can see them along the exclusive path called Carving Gallery. The Japanese garden (called Suikeien) is around the back of the temple. Suikeien Garden was built in 1965 and is made so visitors can enjoy the view walking around the garden on covered and elevated wooden walkways. It is a relaxing place with trees and a pond with carps and turtles. The Carving Gallery and Suikeien Garden require an admission fee of 400 yen.( Plus we were able to visit also the Yamamoto Tei Garden and The Tora-san Museum with the same tickets.) Shibamata Taishakuten Temple appears as a stage for many novels and movies. The most well-known is the famous Japanese film series, Otoko-wa-tsuraiyo (It's Tough Being a Man), featuring a main character named Tora-san. In novels, the most famous work is Natsume Soseki's novel, Higansugimade (“Until after the Spring Equinox”). At the end of the video you will also see an old Omikuji machine! If you come to Tokyo don’t miss this fantastic temple and its surroundings.
