The boulevard with its generous stretch of water down the centre was commissioned from the court master builder Huschberger in the place of the existing fortifications, when the area was redeveloped in 1802. It was completed in 1804. The excavation of a moat of 31 m width and 5 m depth required the Düssel to be diverted to provide the nececessary water. Two wooden bridges crossing the moat were provided with toll huts. On the suggestion of the landscape architect Weyhe, trees were planted alongside, and the boulevard was later on named Kastanienallee (Chestnut Avenue).
The origin of its today's name is as legendary as it is itself: after horse manure was thrown at King Friedrich Wilhelm IV (1848), it's name was changed from Kastanienallee (Chestnut Avenue) to Königsallee (King's Avenue) as a sign of goodwill.
In June 2014 Düsseldorf’s high-end shopping address “Königsallee” joined with its Paris equivalent “Avenue Montaigne” in a street twinning project. Bringing the two avenues closer together in terms of fashion, the cooperation between Paris and Düsseldorf will at the same time enhance the international importance of these luxury miles. The partnership will be filled with life through the cooperation of local hotels and joint activities of the two boulevards, successfully presenting a unified face to the world. An innovative project that will create synergies in shaping the public image, promote an intercultural exchange and as a result put Düsseldorf’s high-end boulevard even more solidly on the map.
What would Düsseldorf be without it? Düsseldorf's Königsallee is more than a street to shop on – it's a business card, a real splendour and an international trademark. Affectionately called the Kö by Düsseldorf's residents, it's the main reason for the city's image of an elegant shopping destination and a sophisticated lifestyle.
The Who's Who of the fashion world presents itself on the Kö. Numerous flagship-stores, small boutiques, luxurious jewelers and impressive shopping-malls invite for a leisurely stroll. A personal shopper will meet you for a shopping tour through selected fashion shops if you like, additionally many street cafés offer a rest to see and be seen.
The west side of the Kö has developed into a top address for luxury hotels: the highly traditional Breidenbacher Hof, the Steigenberger Parkhotel and the InterContinental are to be found. All three hotels with their five stars have been commended as Superior.

Dusseldorf is the capital city of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the seventh most populous city in Germany. Düsseldorf is an international business and financial centre, renowned for its fashion and trade fairs. The city is headquarters to one Fortune Global 500 and two DAX companies. Messe Düsseldorf organises nearly one fifth of premier trade shows. Düsseldorf is known for its academy of fine arts (Joseph Beuys, Emanuel Leutze, August Macke, Gerhard Richter, Sigmar Polke, and Andreas Gursky), its pioneering influence on electronic / experimental music (Kraftwerk) and its Japanese community. On the river Rhine, Düsseldorf holds Rhenish Carnival celebrations every year in February / March. Mercer's 2012 Quality of Living survey ranked Düsseldorf the sixth most livable city in the world.
Düsseldorf lies at the centre of the Lower Rhine basin, where the delta of the River Düssel flows into the Rhine. The city lies on the east side of the Rhine, except District 4 (Oberkassel, Niederkassel, Heerdt and Lörick). Across the Rhine, the city of Neuss stands on the delta of the Erft river. Düsseldorf lies southwest of the Ruhr urban area, and in the middle of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region. Düsseldorf is built entirely on alluvium, mud, sand, clay and occasionally gravel. The highest point in Düsseldorf is the top of Sandberg in the far eastern part of the city (Hubbelrath borough) at 165 metres (541 ft). The lowest point is at the far northern end in Wittlaer borough where the Schwarzbach enters the Rhine, with an average elevation of 28 metres (92 ft).
Düsseldorf Airport, also referred to as Rhein-Ruhr Airport, is located eight kilometres (5.0 miles) from the city centre and can easily be reached by train or the S-Bahn urban railway. The city is a major hub in the Deutsche Bahn (DB) railway network. More than 1,000 trains stop in Düsseldorf daily. Düsseldorf Central Station at Konrad-Adenauer-Platz is located in Düsseldorf-Stadtmitte.
