The Old Stone Bridge - Konjic, Bosnia & Herzegovina
David’s Been Here is touring all the must-visit sites and top attractions in Bosnia & Herzegovina. In this short clip, David brings us to the south-central town of Konjic, where he pays a visit to the Old Stone Bridge. Built in the year 1682 by the Ottomans, this historic bridge was destroyed by the Germans in 1945 and then reconstructed in 2009. One of the best examples of Ottoman architecture in all of Bosnia & Herzegovina, this bridge is well worth a visit if you’re driving from the capital city of Sarajevo to the southern city of Mostar. Take some photos of the bridge, stop by for a coffee and take a short tour around this picturesque, quaint town… an interesting and quick day trip in southern central Bosnia & Herzegovina!

Old bridge - Stara cuprija - Konjic - Bosnia and Herzegovina - Travel Konjic
The old stone bridge in Konjic is one of the four most important in Bosnia and Herzegovina, next to the Old Bridge in Mostar, the Višegrad Bridge on Drina and the Trebinje Arslanagić Bridge. Beautiful BH monument, built in 1682, was also on the list of protected cultural and historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and many consider it a point where Herzegovina joins Bosnia.
Bridge was a masterpiece of architecture of the 17th century. As a builder, the legend mentions Aliaga Hasečić, a senior officer in Istanbul, while some authors, without quoting sources for their claim, attributed this to Ahmet-paša Sokolović.
Giacomo Luccari made the first record of Konjic Bridge in 1790. English architect and travel writer Sir Arthur John Evans made the second record of the stone bridge in Konjic in 1875 when he traveled through Konjic.
During withdrawal, on March 3, 1945, the bridge was bombarded by German forces, and only stone pillars remained standing.
Since it was the only pass over Neretva, in 1946, a new concrete bridge was built below this one. Through the remains of the stone oak in 1962, reinforced concrete one replaced the existing wooden structure.
In 2006, the Municipality of Konjic began working on reconstruction of this symbol, with help of the Government of the Republic of Turkey and the Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina; as well as the revitalization of an Old Town of Konjic with the reconstruction of old shops that were right next to the bridge on the left.
2,408 blocks of tuff, more than 10 tons of lead, almost five tons of clamps were installed in the reconstructed bridge, and everything was fixed with mortar made like it used to be, from sand, lime and minced bricks. The length of the bridge is 101.80 meters and the width is 5.25 meters. Total reconstruction costs amounted to about 5.3 million BAM.
– It was the most beautiful decoration of my hometown, with which I was fortunate to spend part of my childhood. It was a beautiful stone bridge on six arches. It was built in the era of the Ottomans by the delicacy of Haseq Aliaga more than three centuries ago. Three centuries, it is a fair share of time, three hundred years, eh how many months, days, hours, minutes, how many human lives – said BH traveler Zuko Džumhur about this bridge.
Come and see for yourselves.

The internet is sadly becoming more and more toxic/negative, and when it comes to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the level of extreme racist, ethnic, nationalistic and other purely cruel comments has been really upsetting.
So, if you would like to engage (and we really hope you will/do) then please take the time to use our email address :)

Bosnia & Herzegovina: Sarajevo - Konjic - Mostar
This is a bit of an unusual destination, but we recently travelled to the Balkans to Bosnia & Herzegovina. This was after a wild transit detour taking up an entire day from Kuala Lumpur to Doha to Istanbul before finally making it to Sarajevo due to flight departure delays in KLIA.
Bosnia's a beautiful and scenic but once war-torn country, having seen both the beginning of World War I as well as, more recently, the Bosnian War in the early 90's which broke up former Yugoslavia. As a result, many buildings particularly along the north bank of the Miljacka River running through Sarajevo remain scarred with bullet holes from small arms fire, while numerous areas are marked for still active landmines far outside the cities.
If you're interested in travelling to Europe without the weight of the Euro bearing down on our wallets, this is a fantastic destination that's rich in history and culture - with plenty of heart. With about half its population being Muslim, halal food will be an easy find for Muslim travellers.

Rafting on Neretva river, Konjic, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 4K
Rafting on Neretva river, Konjic, Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Neretva (pronounced [něreːtʋa], Serbian Cyrillic: Неретва), also known as the Narenta, is one of the largest rivers of the eastern part of the Adriatic basin. Four HE power-plants with large dams (higher than 15 metres) provide flood protection, power and water storage. It is recognized for its natural environment and diversity of its landscape.
Freshwater ecosystems have suffered from an increasing population and the associated development pressures. One of the most valuable natural resources of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia is its freshwater resource, contained by an abundant wellspring and clear rivers. Situated between the major regional rivers (Drina river on the east, Una river on the west and the Sava river) the Neretva basin contains the most significant source of drinking water.
The Neretva is notable among rivers of the Dinaric Alps region, especially regarding its diverse ecosystems and habitats, flora and fauna, cultural and historic heritage.
Its name has been suggested to come from the Indo-European root *ner, meaning to dive. The same root is seen in the Serbo-Croatian root roniti.
