Motorcycle License in Japan: Part 2 - The driving test (Converting a Foreign License)
Welcome to part two.
If you have finished all the paperwork and passed the written test, you are ready to move on to part 2. This can be as soon as the next day! If you are doing your research ahead of time, be aware of this.
It might seem like I am repeating myself or this is common sense but this practical driving proficiency test can cause a lot of stress for people. Pay attention to every detail because the examiner will be watching. Things that may not seem important in everyday riding may be really critical in passing this test.
Also, taking the day off of work (esp. in Japan) can cause a lot of problems for people so passing on the first try prevents you from wasting days off and pissing your boss off.
If I missed anything please leave a comment. There is a lot involved in taking this test and not knowing everything in advance can lead to a lot of wasted time.

Even if you do not speak Japanese, there are a lot of interesting videos on Youtube that show the techniques for passing the test.
Here are some of my favorites:
This is probably the best one. It is old but shows all the important tasks that need to be completed. This video also looks like it was made by a Driving School.
This one also helped a lot. If you can read Japanese, there is a lot of info in this video. If you can not, you can see a run through the course.
This one is a foreign guy driving his own bike on the course. He is not taking the test, just getting used to his new bike. I don't know how may places allow that.
This one is the 400cc (chuugata 中型) class license:

So this is it, my 3rd attempt at passing the “gaimen kirikae” license exchange driving test from my US license to Japanese driving license. I’m at the Samezu course today and will live stream after it’s finished - pass or fail. I’m no longer nervous. I know there are three course routes and I’m confident on the one from the last two attempts. Again, the Japanese driving test is about testing your ability to drive safely on their small course, not your ability just to drive. Know long when to check the mirrors, signal, how long to stop, adjust the rear view mirror (after you adjust your seat because the mirror angle changes). That’s all stuff that should be second nature. I drove in the US last month and confident as a driver but this is different. This is — the Japanese Driving Exam!

Going To Driving School in Japan! (Getting A Japanese Driver's License!)
The secret is out! I'm getting my full driver's license in Japan!
I’ve been going to Fukuoka Prefectural Driving School to get my license and it’s actually a lot of fun!? I don't know why I waited so long to get this done.
I’ve always had a fear of driving and I was really worried I’d never pass in Japanese... (Okay I haven’t technically taken any exams yet so I can’t say I haven’t failed yet but) I was actually super relieved to know they have English textbooks and the tests can be taken in English too.
The actual classes are all in Japanese though so I haven’t decided which language I’m going to take the tests in, but now that I’m actually going to the school I feel way more confident. Driving on the school course is so boring. I want to get out on the real roads. :o
