Ethiopian Food in 500 YEAR OLD Konso Village in Ethiopia - AMAZING AFRICAN CULTURE!

Due to some unforeseen flight changes in our schedule, we didn’t have much time to explore the Konso Village, but we did have enough time to experience this amazing cultural heritage site, to taste some local food. Visiting the village was a humbling experience, an area of Ethiopia that has been through famine, and to sit down and sample some food from a local family in the village, food they had grown and prepared, was truly special. It is important to remember how fortunate we are to have food on the table.
Konso Village - We began the day in Addis Ababa, where we flew to Arba Minch in southern Ethiopia. After having a quick lunch, some delicious Ethiopian food fish, we drove the bumpy road to Konso. Konso culture and villages are a UNESCO world heritage site, for their preservation of culture and traditions, and it was incredibly special to visit. We toured the village, and I was amazed how advanced their systems were, and their construction.
It was evening and in one of the homes we met a lady who was cooking the family meal for dinner. She was cooking sorghum, moringa leaves, and cassava. It’s not the most flavorful food you’ll taste, but cooked with love, ingredients grown right there, it was a huge honor to share some of their food. It’s a remember of how privileged and fortunate we are to have such abundance.
Thanks to Dessie from Go Addis Tours ( for arranging everything on this trip.

KONSO:
Konso (also known as Karati) is a town on the Sagan River in southwestern Ethiopia. The administrative center of the Konso special woreda of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples Region, this town has a latitude and longitude of 5°15′N 37°29′ECoordinates: 5°15′N 37°29′E and an elevation of 1650 meters. It is also called Pakawle by some of the neighboring inhabitants.
Konso, named after the Konso people, is known for its religious traditions, waga sculptures, and nearby fossil beds (the latter an archaeological site of early hominids). The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List on September 30, 1997 due to its purported universal cultural significance and official made a World Heritage Site in 2011.
Philip Briggs suggests that the present-day town might prosaically be described as a traffic circle of comically vast dimensions, surrounded by a solitary petrol station and a scattering of local hotels.According to the SNNPR's Bureau of Finance and Economic Development, as of 2003 Konso's amenities include digital telephone access, postal service, electricity provided by a generator, and a branch of a microfinance organization. Local industries include beekeeping, cotton weaving, and agriculture. The market is held on Mondays and Thursdays at a point 2 kilometers from town along the Jinka Road.A permaculture farm, Strawberry Fields Eco-Lodge, was founded in 2007 north of town and works with international volunteers and three local schools to grow food, promote ecotourism, and provide permaculture education.Based on figures from the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, Konso has an estimated total population of 4,593 of whom 2,258 are men and 2,335 are women. The 1994 national census reported this town had a total population of 2,535 of whom 1,250 were men and 1,285 were women.
Named after the Konso people, the town with 5,500ha of surrounding landscape has been declared a World Heritage Site for its traditional landscape with terraced agriculture and typical villages in 2011. Important features are the unique designs of the houses, the organization of the 32 dwellings behind 1 to 6 rows of defensive stone walls as well as nearby fossil beds. The communities also build traditional reservoirs to supply the villages with water during the dry season. The terraces are built behind up to 5m high stone walls to prevent soil erosion and maximize the collection of rainwater, so as to enhance agricultural production. The wooden statues, called Wakas or Wagas and stone steles, represent important family members as well as heroic events at burial sites. Villagers will gather at the Mora, a public gathering spot where the pafta, a large hut, and Olahitas, the central location for cultural ceremonies. In these areas they would perform rituals, dances, food preparations, and weaving; all of the wonderful aspects of Konso heritage.
The architecture of the Konso villages is is different from traditional houses and dwellings elsewhere. The Konso people live in fortified villages enclosed by stone walls.
