Ancient history
Hercules Sarcophagus (ca. 250–260 AD) at the Konya Archaeological Museum
Excavations have shown that the region was inhabited during the Late Copper Age, around 3000 BC.[6] The city came under the influence of the Hittites around 1500 BC. These were overtaken by the Sea Peoples around 1200 BC.
The Phrygians established their kingdom in central Anatolia in the 8th century BC. Xenophon describes Iconium, as the city was called, as the last city of Phrygia. The region was overwhelmed by Cimmerian invaders c. 690 BC. It was later part of the Persian Empire, until Darius III was defeated by Alexander the Great in 333 BC.
Alexander's empire broke up shortly after his death and the town came under the rule of Seleucus I Nicator. During the Hellenistic period the town was ruled by the kings of Pergamon. As Attalus III, the last king of Pergamon, was about to die without an heir, he bequeathed his kingdom to the Roman Republic. During the Roman Empire, under the rule of emperor Claudius, the city's name was changed to Claudioconium, and during the rule of emperor Hadrianus to Colonia Aelia Hadriana.

Seljuk palace comes to light in Konya
New sections of a summer palace built for Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubad on the shore of Lake Beyşehir have come to the surface, but the fate of the ancient site remains unclear due to a lack of funding for its restoration.
“A sum of funds was allocated for the restoration. But there is no clear movement. Actually, works should start as soon as possible. Because stones are falling from the structures every year; they should be handled urgently,” said Çanakkale 18 Mart University Professor Rüçhan Arık, the head of the excavations.
He said the most important issue was the amount of funds, since they needed a modern lab and a larger, specialist staff. “The funds are enough for one month of work only,” he said.
The most recent finds include a boathouse and shipyard belonging to the palace, named Kubadabad.
Arık said two other structures were found in the latest excavations and added that the function of the structures, which were found on the west side of the “Small Palace,” had not yet been determined. Arık said that during excavations over the past 34 years, 15 structures had been unearthed and restored in the region.
He added that among those structures, the “Small Palace” and the “Big Palace” had become two functional structures and their restoration and conservation projects had been approved, too.
Arık said the palace’s shipyard and boathouse, which they identify as “monumental structures,” were unearthed during the 2013 and 2014 excavation seasons.
“This is the first and only known lake shipyard. This discovery in Kubadabad shows us that the Seljuk people gave importance to shipping and water. At the same time, it shows that there was busy transportation traffic on the basin of Lake Beyşehir. It is understood that people used the waterway to reach Kubadabad. It should be restored, too. Right next to it is the Seljuk dam, called Gürlevi, with a pier in front of it. Other than these, we unearthed two areas called ‘Köşklü Bath’ and ‘Structure with three spaces’ and the palace worksite. A brand-new tile category emerged from the storage of the worksite. All of them are waiting for restoration and conversation,” said the professor.
The professor said they had exerted great efforts for Kubadabad to be included on a list of National Palaces, adding that the palace was finally set to be given support for restoration and conservation this year.

A Tour Of Central Turkey—Ankara, Konya, Cappadocia I The Great Courses
Take a tour of Central Turkey and witness the magnificent sites to understand why most are drawn to this beautiful part of Turkey. Professor John R. Hale has partnered with The Great Courses to take you on this magical journey.
This free video comes from the course The Great Tours: Greece and Turkey, from Athens to Istanbul. Learn more about this course and start your FREE trial of The Great Courses Plus here:
Central Turkey is home to great cities like Ankara and Konya and a region that is unlike any other place on earth, Cappadocia. This area features magnificent architectural sites attesting to ancient civilizations and cultures; extraordinary geological formations; and mysterious cave dwellings and sunken cities. What have archaeologists discovered about the meaning of these sites?
In thanks for being our customer, here is a free video lecture: Central Turkey—Ankara, Konya, Cappadocia, delivered by Professor John R. Hale.
Many people are drawn to central Turkey, especially to see the spectacular landscape of Cappadocia. Here are fairy chimneys, pillars and spires of basalt; cave dwellings carved into the soft cliffs at Göreme and Zelve, UNESCO sites; and hidden cities underground—at least 40 in all. The complexity and scale of these underground cities have no equal anywhere in the world. Archaeologists estimate that tens of thousands of people lived in these cities.
Dr. Hale is Director of Liberal Studies at the University of Louisville. He completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. During more than 30 years of archaeological field work, Professor Hale has led student and adult tours to many of the sites he has studied, especially in Greece and Turkey. He has carried out studies of ancient oracle sites in Greece and Turkey, including the famed Delphic oracle, and has participated in an undersea search in Greek waters for lost fleets from the Greek and Persian wars.

Mevlana Museum in Konya (2/12)
Ein wesentlicher Höhepunkt während der Fahrt nach Kappadokien war die Besichtigung des Mevlana Museums in Konya.
Dschalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad ar-Rūmī * 30. September 1207 in Balch, heute Afghanistan, † 17.
dich zeigst.
Dies ist die Kaaba der Liebenden,
diejenigen, die suchen, werden hier erfüllt.
Nimm den Rat den Du hier bekommst
mit ganzem Herzen,
und lege deinen Kopf
auf die Schwelle der Wahrheit.

How to get to Çatalhöyük from Konya, Turkey
I went to Çatalhöyük in August, 2018.
Firstly take a bus from Karatay Otobüs Terminali at Konya to Çumra.
The fee was only 7 TL (1.2 US$), and it took 45min to Çumra.
From Çumra I found a taxi behind the bus terminal. The taxi driver offered round-trip to Çatalhöyük by 80 TL (14 US$), it includes he will wait at the Çatalhöyük site for 1 or 1.5 hours. This time is negotiable.
After the site watching, I took same taxi to went back to Çumra.
There are several buses to goes Konya from Çumra.

Exploring the Antalya Archaeology Museum in Turkey
Not your typical museum - the Antalya Archaeology Museum along the Turkish Riviera showcases a wonderful selection of artifacts, ornate tombs and gorgeous marbles from the middle Roman period (2nd and 3rd century AD).
Perhaps one of the most striking figures is the beautifully displayed statue of Heracles.
Though not shown in this video, the museum also has a mixture of historic pottery and similar artifacts, a collection of ancient coins, and beautifully preserved early Christian artwork in addition to rugs and period clothing.
You can find the museum website here:
