Caledonai Organic Farm - A Saskcess Story
Caledonia Organic Farm evolved from the fertile floodplain of the Kootenay River in the Creston Valley BC where Ken and Pam Irving grew a variety of specialty grains and produce. Since then they have stretched their wings and moved eastward to the larger, wide-open country of the prairies, a landscape almost custom designed for growing quality grain crops.
At Caledonia they grow a mixture of grains, oilseeds and pulses, interspersed with legume green manures, to keep the dark brown loam soil rich and fertile. Industrial hemp for hemp hearts and hemp oil is their specialty, but cash crops also include flax, barley, peas and others.
Caledonia Hemp Farm is along the Eagle Creek riparian corridor where the landscape teems with wildlife- meadowlarks, pronghorns, rabbits the size of small deer, and owls sitting like cats on fence posts surveying the scene. Endangered shrikes, punctuating the seasons, nest in the front garden while whooping cranes swoop overhead on their migratory path.
