Croatia Sailing Trip | Part 6 | Korčula Island | Korcula Town
Part - 6 - Visiting Korčula Island
The Island Of Korčula is one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic sea. It is also one of the most popular travel destinations in this part of Croatia. Like most of the Croatian islands, the Greeks, who gave it the name Korkyra Melaina or 'Black Corfu' for its dark and densely wooded appearance, first settled here.
The island itself is rich in art and culture, as well as beautiful nature. It features numerous secluded beaches and bays, small and uninhabited Archipelago consisting of sixteen islets as well as breathtaking views from the top of the hills.
The main town on the island is also named Korčula where the sword dance Moreška, a well-known folk drama/dance, which used to be played all over the Mediterranean is now solely performed here. Korčula Old Town is a typical medieval walled Dalmatian town, with its round defensive walls and towers and cluster of red-roofed houses where Marco Polo (1254 - 1324) the famous world-traveller and writer, as well as a Venetian merchant, is reputed to have been born.In the Old Town, his supposed house of birth will shortly be turned into a Museum of Marco Polo.
Besides all the natural beauties the Island has a lot to offer to a visitor to see and learn in its galleries, museums and churches. The nearest airports are Split and Dubrovnik. The island is fairly easily accessible from the Croatian mainland by various ferries.

We visited the beautiful city of Korcula, Croatia and enjoyed the peaceful setting. Korcula is believed to be the birthplace and the beginning of Marco Polo's travels. It is a walled city with three of the four towers still in place. The fortifications were built to ward of the raiding Turks. It is really beautiful here and a perfect place to visit by sailboat. Foggy fits right in!

KORCULA, Croatia --Exploring the winding and picturesque streets of Medieval walled city of KORCULA
KORCULA Old TOWN is a medieval walled city positioned on an oval-shaped swelling
Visit the old Medieval walled city of Old Korcula in Croatia with us as we wander the many winding streets with many old Venetian Renasissance buildings and walk the ramparts overlooking the crystal blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.
Korcula is an island approx 29 miles long and 4.8 miles wide in the Adriatic Sea
along the Dalmation coast.
The city itself is grooved with a succession of narrow streets that branch off the spine of the main street like the fish bone. Fishbone shape was used in Korcula Old Town design to reduce the effects of wind and sun and provide citizens with sheltered and comfortable accommodation.
The main street runs throughout the town itself stretching from north to south, dividing the Old Town, an ellipse shape, into two equal parts. Rows of side streets that run from seashores on the West as well as on the East side of the town, meet the main street in the top of the small hill where Korcula Old Town’s main square Trg Svetog Marka and Sveti Marko Cathedral is located.

One Month in Croatia - Island Hopping Croatia - Korcula Island
Our next stop on our one month in Croatia was Korcula Island, Korcula Old Town specifically. We were just booking as we go so island hopping Croatia could be done at whatever pace we decided. We had a loose Croatian Island hopping itinerary so we could just wing it as we travelled the Croatian Adriatic Sea Coastline.
We initially booked only 4 nights but we founds lots of things to do in Korcula so we stayed for one week in Korcula. We rode bikes in Korcula, hired a car to explore the island of Korcula and climbed the bell tower of korcula as well as eating in some of the best restaurants in Korcula.
Is Croatia expensive? Not really, Croatia is cheaper than Western Europe but not as cheap as it used to be.
Getting around Croatia is easy. Finding the best way to get from Dubrovnik to Korcula was a choice between ferry or bus. The ferry leaves at 7am, the bus at 9am. We chose the bus. Spectacular views over the Adriatic Sea and the Croatian coastline were our company for the duration of the trip. The bus boards a ferry and 15 minutes later we were deposited right near Korcula Old Town.
Our Accomodation in Korcula was a great Airbnb in Korcula Old Town.

After Split, we took the ferry to Korcula, Marco Polo's birthplace. Still early season, the town was quiet, with museums not yet open. But Korcula is worth the stop. Also see my St. Atuna Church video posted nearby and another to come.
