Croatia Sailing Trip | Part 6 | Korčula Island | Korcula Town
Part - 6 - Visiting Korčula Island
The Island Of Korčula is one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic sea. It is also one of the most popular travel destinations in this part of Croatia. Like most of the Croatian islands, the Greeks, who gave it the name Korkyra Melaina or 'Black Corfu' for its dark and densely wooded appearance, first settled here.
The island itself is rich in art and culture, as well as beautiful nature. It features numerous secluded beaches and bays, small and uninhabited Archipelago consisting of sixteen islets as well as breathtaking views from the top of the hills.
The main town on the island is also named Korčula where the sword dance Moreška, a well-known folk drama/dance, which used to be played all over the Mediterranean is now solely performed here. Korčula Old Town is a typical medieval walled Dalmatian town, with its round defensive walls and towers and cluster of red-roofed houses where Marco Polo (1254 - 1324) the famous world-traveller and writer, as well as a Venetian merchant, is reputed to have been born.In the Old Town, his supposed house of birth will shortly be turned into a Museum of Marco Polo.
Besides all the natural beauties the Island has a lot to offer to a visitor to see and learn in its galleries, museums and churches. The nearest airports are Split and Dubrovnik. The island is fairly easily accessible from the Croatian mainland by various ferries.
Thanks for watching, Stay tuned for more.

The Historic Town of Korčula
A good look at the historic town of Korčula on the Dalmatian island of the same name in Croatia. The building history is complex and the architecture rich; the various architectural features and fascinating stone carvings shown reflect this fact. The lengthy tour follows the radial street structure in a clockwise fashion, from SSW to SSE. Some clips of sea-wall defences on the E and viewpoint accessed from a wonderful decorative stairway on the W are shown after this. A few clips looking W along the beautiful palm-lined coastal road leading to the Dominican Monastery of Sveti Nikola follow, ending with some more views of the historic town from the higher ground behind, i.e. S.

The island of Korcula is one of the greenest islands in the Adriatic Sea, with abundant vineyards and olive groves. Its southern coast is formed by small beaches and quiet coves. The Greeks, called the island Korkyra, Melaina or black Corfu, all adjectives to define the wooded area. Korcula is located about 20km from the mainland between Makarska and Ston on Peljesac peninsula. Its south side is very rich in small beaches and over 200 caves. Currently it is home to some 3000 inhabitants. Access to the island is easy if you departure from Split or Dubrovnik by ferry boat. Also, there is a ferry connection from Orebic on Peljesac peninsula. The main city of the island Korcula has the same name. At the town of Korcula remains the essence of market town, with its mix of culture and its thick walls reminiscent of Dubrovnik. The city of Korkula appears as a typical medieval Dalmatian town, with towers and defense red-roofed houses. They say that Marco Polo was born here (1254 - 1324), the wayward traveler to China, and Mongolia. And in fact the museum is one of the many cultural centers that Korcula offers to its visitors. In addition, since Korcula is bound to medieval battles, they preserved the tradition of chivalry dances held throughout the island. Korcula visitors will find here villages isolated of the time, places where you can breathe peace, green fields and small houses surrounded by nature, certainly a relaxing place to plan your short trip or family vacations. Throughout Korsula island there are few hotels, and many rooms and apartments in private houses. Visitors should have no problem finding accommodation even in peak season (July and August).
Best Places in Korcula Croatia | Visit Korcula - Croatia
Korcula the greenest, most independent and most interesting of Croatia's 1,000 or so islands, Korcula was a favourite Greek holiday spot over 2,000 years ago. Very much a law unto itself - as you might expect from a community that resisted the sieges of centuries - Korcula town is a mini-fortress enclosed with honey-coloured stone walls that contain hidden treasures, from icons to Tiepolos, as well as architectural delights in every narrow, cobbled street.

From Split, take a car ferry about three hours to the south, passing by dramatic coastal cliffs and picturesque archipelagoes, some with lighthouses and crumbling stone fortifications. Alight in the town of Vela Luka on the gloriously scenic island of Korčula. The drive to the opposite end of the island wound around limestone mountains, ancient stone terraces and strikingly sited hill towns. The lapis-blue Adriatic would suddenly appear from time to time, far below the road. Olive trees and vineyards eke out an existence in the poor, stony soil, producing small amounts of deeply flavored oil and wine.
