Korkeasaari (Swedish: Högholmen) is an island in Helsinki, Finland where the country's biggest zoo is situated. The English name of the zoo is Helsinki Zoo.
The zoo is located on a 22-hectare (54-acre) rocky island, connected to the mainland via a bridge to the Helsinki district of Mustikkamaa, where there is access to the zoo all year round. A ferry and water buses take visitors to the island summertime from the Kauppatori and Hakaniemi.
Korkeasaari is one of the most popular places among visitors in Helsinki. The animals on display are divided geographically to Amazonia, Africasia and Borealia. There are about two hundred Animal species, and about a thousand plant species.
The zoo was started in 1889, and that makes it one of the oldest zoos in the world.
The main collection comprises mammals and birds, but even reptiles, fish and invertebrates are on display. (The Amazonia building has an aquarium department.) No big mammals (elephants, giraffes, hippopotamus, rhinoceros) are on display, as all warm climate animals must be indoors for wintertime. There is a large collection of big cats, and the snow leopards born in Korkeasaari are famous.
Two or three times a year the zoo organizes night walks, when visitors can see the big cats and other nocturnal animals in their natural waking hours.

Did you know?
Wintertime 2010 one wolverine (ahma) escaped from it's fence with the help of lot of snow. But finally it got caugh 6 km away from the island.
HOW TO GET THERE?
You can get there easily from the Helsinki Market Square. From there Korkeasaari Zoo, water bus (ferry/boat) will take you to the Korkeasaari Zoo (seen in this video). Ferry trip takes about 20 min. Ferry connection is available from 1. May to the end of the September. Winter time you can get there by using the bridge connection. Bus number 16 from the Helsinki Central Railway Station will take you the bridge. Traditional way to get to the Korkeasaari Zoo is the ferry connection. Korkeasaari Zoo is open whole year round.

Siberian tigers are the biggest cats in the world.
Siperiantiikeri eli amurintiikeri (Panthera tigris altaica) on kaikista luonnossa elävistä tiikereistä ja kissaeläimistä kookkain. Urokset painavat tavallisesti 180--306 kilogrammaa ja pituutta niille kertyy kuononpäästä hännänpäähän 2,70--3,30 metriä. Naaraat ovat yleensä pienempiä, sillä paino jää 100--170 kilogrammaan ja pituuskin 2,40--2,75 metriin. Suurin tavattu yksilö on painanut 464 kilogrammaa ja pisin on ollut 3,96 metriä pitkä. Suurimpien urosten pituus kuononpäästä hännänjuureen voi olla 2,2 metriä. Korkeudessa siperiantiikeri häviää leijonille, mutta on niitä paljon pitempi ja painavampi.

На прошлых выходных сгоняли в Хельсинки в зоопарк. Грубо говоря, целенаправленно туда и ехали. Сестра как-то делала в школе доклад про Финку и их зоопарк, но несмотря на частые поездки с родителями в Хельсинки, ни разу в нём не побывала, вот и решили заполнить этот пробел.
Выехали днём в пятницу, вернулись днём в воскресенье — не лучшие дни для поездки в Финляндию, т.к. все едут на шопинг. На Российской границе в ту сторону провели 10 минут, на Финской 2 часа, почему? Вопрос остаётся открытым. Обратно 20 минут на Финской и час на Российской, потому что женщине с таможни внезапно приспичило оформить документы на собак так, что она отправила меня в ветеринарную службу, где я встретил играющую в какую-то мифическую RPG’шку сотрудницу, которая сразу после сворачивания игры, пригрозилась отправкой обратно в Финляндию на поиски ветеринарной клиники, дабы поставить собакам клинический осмотр. При выезде из России таможенники просто посмотрели на собак и выдали что-то типа: Ой какие пушистые! А сколько лет? А большой ещё вырастет? Много от них шерсти?, и всё. О том, что перед въездом нужно делать клинический осмотр — ни слова. Хотя сам мог догадаться, что он нужен был, ведь каждый раз об этом напоминают при пересечении границы с Латвией, но на обратном пути никто собак не проверяет. Ещё ни разу при въезде в Россию пограничники не открывали ветеринарные паспорта, а тут… Скучно, видимо, было.
Что касается дороги и Олроада:
1. В efficiency невозможно обгонять, даже с кикдауном;
2. Практически сразу после границы, спустя километров 20-30, начинается дорога по типу автобана, по которой можно без единого замедления ехать 140 км/ч (120 ограничение) прямо до Хельсинки.
3. При постоянной скорости 140 км/ч расход около 7,8 л/100 км, что в общем-то, далеко не рекордный результат, т.к. на B8 на аналогичной скорости расход был, эммм... Таким же.

Aikainen kevät herätti karhut talviuniltaan (2017)
Korkeasaaren karhut ovat heränneet talviuniltaan. Eläintenhoitajat kuulivat ensi kertaa tiistaina kolistelua Karhulinnasta ja kohtasivat kaksi unenpöpperöistä kontiota. 16- ja 11-vuotiaat naaraskarhut nukkuivat kolmen kuukauden talviunet. Karhut näyttävät havahtuneen kevään tuloon, sillä sää oli alkuviikosta aurinkoinen ja poikkeuksellisen lämmin.
Tänään karhut kömpivät talvipesästään ulos selvästi nälkäisinä. Ne kiersivät lumipälvisen tarhansa laidasta laitaan, penkoivat kannonkolot, nuuskivat puunoksat ja nyhtivät ruohoa suihinsa. Kaluttavaksi löytyi myös lumen alle unohtunut luinen lihanpala. Karhuista nuorempi kävi hankaamassa turkkiaan kaarnaisia puunrunkoja ja vesialtaan karheaa seinää vasten.
Karhujen ruokahalu kasvaa päivä päivältä. Ensimmäisiä makupaloina ne ovat saaneet rusinoita, pähkinöitä, omenoita ja salaattia. Viikonlopulle karhujen jääkaappiin on varattu tuhdimpia liha-aterioita. Talvipesä pidetään karhuille edelleen avoinna, jotta ne voivat halutessaan vetäytyä sinne päivänokosille.
Korkeasaaren karhut ovat nukkuneet viime talvina hieman aiempaa levottomammin. Vuosi sitten talviuni loppui jo helmikuun ensimmäisellä viikolla ja toissavuonna karhut heräsivät syömään tammikuussa kesken talviunien. Tänä talvena karhut nousivat jalkeille pariin kertaan, viimeksi kuukausi sitten, mutta jatkoivat vielä uniaan. Karhuille on normaalia havahtua talviunen aikana vaihtamaan lepoasentoa.
Karhujen talviuni voi Suomen oloissa kestää jopa puoli vuotta. Karhut heräävät yleensä maalis-huhtikuussa, kun lumen sulamisvesi alkaa valua talvipesään. Pohjoiset karhut säästävät paljon energiaa vaipumalla talviuneen lumisiksi kuukausiksi. Etelämpänä Euroopassa karhut löytävät riittävästi ravintoa ympäri vuoden, joten niiden ei tarvitse nukkua talviunta.
