Ala-Archa Gorge in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
Ala-Archa Gorge in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan
The Kyrgyz state natural park Ala-Archa is considered the first national nature park in Central Asia by the time of its organization. It was organized by a joint resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Kyrgyzstan and the Council of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic on April 29, 1976, No. 244 on the basis of the Frunze forestry department under the State Forestry Committee of the Kyrgyz SSR, and since 1996 under the Office of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic. The organization of the Ala-Archa Nature Park is one of the most significant measures of nature conservation in the Kyrgyz SSR in recent years.
The park was created with the purpose of preservation and protection in the interests of society and future generations of a unique natural formation for the republic-the ancient valley of the Ala-Archa river and its environs.
The Ala Archa National Park is an alpine national park in the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, established in 1976 and located approximately 40 kilometres south of the capital city of Bishkek.
In Kyrgyz, the archa, which gives the park its name, is a bright or many-colored juniper which the Kyrgyz people have traditionally held in special esteem, using smoke from its burning wood to chase away evil spirits. However, the archa is not supposed to be planted near the home, because it is believed gradually to sap the energy from human beings living close-by.
The park covers about 200 square kilometres, and its altitude ranges from about 1,500 meters at the entrance to a maximum of 4,895 meters at Peak Semenova Tian-Shanski, the highest peak in the Kyrgyz Ala-tau range of the Tian Shan. There are more than 20 small and large glaciers and some 50 mountain peaks within the park.
Two smaller rivers, the Adygene and the Ak-Sai, originate from these glaciers' melting waters. The Adygene gorge is a wooded valley with waterfalls, springs and abundant trout.
The park includes the gorge of the Ala-Archa River and the mountains surrounding it.
A small reservoir on the Kargay-Bulak river was built to study the Amu Darya trout. Other wildlife includes the very rare snow leopard on the alpine meadows and snowfields above 2,500 meters elevation, wild goats, roe deer and marmots.
The snow leopard has been photographed by the park's camera for the first time in May 2017.
Many plants can be found in the park, including the Crocus alatavicus.
The park is a destination point for weekend picnickers, hikers, horse trekkers, skiers as well as mountain climbers looking for ice, rock and mixed routes. The park is open year round; although the most popular season is late summer and early fall. Every May 1, hundreds of people camp out in the valley and climb Mount Komsomolets for the Alpinada festival.
There is a nominal fee for entering the park. Past the gate, the road continues 12km to a small collection of buildings, including one newly renovated lodge. At the end of the road, up a trail to the left (East), lies the Ak-Sai Glacier, where remains of a Soviet climbing base indicate the high quality mountaineering within the park. The region's most famous peaks rise from the Ak-Sai glacier, including Korona (4860 meters) and Free Korea (4740 meters). To the west of Ala Archa Valley is a trail to the Adygene valley where a climbers' cemetery is located. A third main trail continues down the center of the Ala-Archa valley for 10 kilometres to an old, now abandoned, ski area and numerous other 4000 metres peaks.
In December 2016, a map of every country's most popular tourist site published by TripAdvisor indicated that the Ala Archa Gorge was the most popular destination in Kyrgyzstan.

First Ascent of Black Spark Peak in At Bashi Range Kyrgyzstan
Always exciting to reach the tip for the first time and confirm the exact altitude. With ISM team members and guides 2018 Virgin Summits expedition to Kyrgyzstan. Why Black Spark ? Well shortly after this photo was taken we all felt the buzz of an impending electric storm and bailed out quickly to avoid the sparks on the black rocks!
Kyrgyzstan 2017 /Trek Terský Alatau, Karakol, Ala Archa/
Začali jsme v oblasti Karakolu, kde jsme tradičně začli v Jety Oguz, ale po prvním sedle Teleti Pass, jsme zabočili do méně známého údolí vedoucí pod Pik Karakol. Zde jsme prošli přímo pod Pik Karakolem přes ledovce a sedlo On-Ter. Následně jsme mířili směrem k jezeru Ala Kul, kde jsme šli také méně známou cestou přes sedlo Cnernyye Kamn, jenž se nachází přímo nad Ala Kulem. Následně jsme od jezera sešli známou trasou dolů a do městečka Karakol se vydali UAZem.
Jeden den relaxu u největšího ledovcového jezera Issyk Kul a už jsme to směřovali do národního parku Ala Archa. Zde je možné (s vybavením) zlézt nějaké ty vršky. Nám počasí umožnilo pouze výstup na Pik Ucitel.
Climbing in the Western At-Bashi Mountain range of Kyrgyzstan
Kyrgyzstan is rich in little-explored mountains. One example is the At Bashi, a beautiful range of snowy summits and technical rocky peaks near and parallel to the Chinese border.
The objective of our expedition, which was organized by the International School of Mountaineering (ISM) and led by Adrian Nelhams, was to explore some of these unclimbed peaks in the western range, via an approach from the south.

Ak Sai Glacier (3500 m) is located in the Ala-Archa Gorge, which is close to Bishkek. The gorge houses the majestic mountains of the Kyrgyz Ala Too which help make up the Ak Sai “horseshoe,” mountains precisely curved to deny entrance to the southern winds that try to blow into the valley, leaving them encrusted in a huge shield of ice.
The Ak-Say glacier (means white valley) is situated in the Ala Archa valley and surrounded by popular peaks like Teketor (4441m.); Aktoo (4620m.); peak Korona (4860m.); peak Iziskatel (4400m.); peak Svobodnaya Korea (Free Korea, 4740m.); peak Box (4240m.).
