Lapland artist echoes cry from nature
(28 Dec 2019) LEAD IN:
A visual artist from Finnish Lapland is echoing a cry from nature as part of a retrospective exhibit being staged in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland.
60-year-old artist Kaija Kiuru's work explores man's changing relationship with nature, using locally sourced materials and traditional techniques.
STORY-LINE:
Traditional crafts, pine wood cut from Lappish forests, memories of gardens now marked and ruined.
Rovaniemi's Art Museum is mounting a retrospective exhibit dedicated to Finnish visual artist Kaija Kiuru.
It covers 24 years of the 60-year-old artist's career, including sculptures, photographs and installations.
Many of the works come from northern nature, dealing with the changing relationship between nature and man.
She makes her art pieces the same way as man deals with nature, shaping it, forming it and using it, making something different to make us think, explains exhibitions curator Aira Huovinen.
Recent works concern the artist's opposition to a proposed mine in Viiankiaapa nature conservation area near Kiuru's hometown of Sodankyla, about 120 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle.
Works include a photographic series that show boundary markers fixed on trees in the conservation area, reminding viewers it's a location that's meant to be preserved.
There's also a photographic series showing local people holding demonstration signs, they look directly towards the viewer, challenging them to consider their own views.
She doesn't judge, she just shows us the facts, the state of nature at the moment. And how does the man have an effect to the nature, says Huovinen.
Born in 1959, Kiuru has been staging private exhibitions since 1994.
Underneath creates the impression of underground life with roots hanging from the ceiling. Some have been painted red to remind the viewer of blood vessels.
Tent is made from lace tablecloth, crocheted behind to make a tent cloth. The material was all bought from flea markets or received from acquaintances. It invokes old living rooms of the past, spread across a modern, common hiking tent.
Some ladies have made them, and then they have used, and then they go to the second hand shop and Kaija is buying them, and then she is putting them together, explains art history professor Tuija Hautala-Hirvioja, who knows Kiuru personally.
We have reindeer herders, we still have fishermen who are working in nature. So, nature is a normal way of life, but also, it's a very relaxed visit in nature. And of course, there is all the time, behind her, thinking, worry about the nature, what is going to happen nature today? says Hautala-Hirvioja.
In Forcing Nature, nature and the industrial world are combined. The work consists of pine marten furs fixed on metal frames. In the corner, one taxidermy pine marten remains.
The skins are mostly years of leftover materials from Lappish craftsmen. The work serves to remind viewers how man modifies and uses nature for his own needs.
I think the viewers of this exhibition will have to think again their relationship. Think about the way they use nature. Do they take advantage of it? Or do they just enjoy and let it be as it is? says Huovinen.
Places of the Mind Framed by the World runs at Rovaniemi Art Museum, part of Korundi culture house until 12 January 2020.

Artist-in-residence:Canal Cheong Jagerroos
A video about the experience of Canal Cheong Jagerroos at the International Artist-In-Residence Program in Beijing 2017, including images from the opening of her related solo exhibition ‘Waking/蘇醒’ at Being 3 Gallery, Beijing, China.
Canal Cheong Jagerroos (b.1968), a Chinese contemporary visual artist who grew up in an artistic family in Macau. She works between Helsinki, Nice and Berlin. As far back as Canal can remember, at the time other children her age were playing with crayons, her father taught her the fundamentals of Chinese ink brush painting. In many ways, Canal’s father teaching has strongly influenced her journey to find artistic expression.
Canal has lived and worked for 25 years in numerous countries from Asia to Europe and Africa. She is currently living with her family in Finland. The unique experience of having lived in such culturally diverse places, namely; Hong Kong, Shanghai, France, Switzerland, Italy, Senegal and Finland has influenced her work greatly whether consciously or subconsciously. Canal has discovered that walking the line between the east and west, facing different cultures, can be both constructive and destructive, but always inspirational.
Canal Cheong Jagerroos is the co-founder of the ongoing art project ‘Blue and Red’ which will be showing in numerous museums in China and Finland from 2018 - 2020.

Tässä jaksossa Tanja hämmästelee taidemuseon valtavia ja hämmentäviä ihmishahmoja ja Timo tuijottaa pyörivää circulografia.
