Kos Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Kos in Greece.
Kos is an historic island oasis beneath the Greek sun. Not the largest of the Dodecanese Islands but certainly one of its most fascinating, with endless sandy beaches and an ancient heritage.The capital of the island is Chora Kos and for 2,000 years, it has been the nerve centre of the island. The city once suffered devastating earthquakes and the island was plagued by numerous invaders including the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, the Knights of St. John and finally, the Turks. The Platia Eleftherìas is the main square of today’s Kos and contains the Archaeological Museum that is housed in a futuristic looking Italian building that dates back to the 1930s. Four kilometres from the city, high in the Dikeos Mountains, is one of the island’s most important sights, the Asclepion, an ancient hospital and sanctuary. A winding road leads to the village of Kefalos, that from below, looks like a small fortified complex. Its white houses and narrow alleys are free of traffic and it’s as though time has stood still. Formerly a village of fishermen, agriculture is now the main source of income for the local people. Kefalos has much historical significance, as it was built on the ruins of the first capital of the island and Hypocrates was born here in 460 B.C. Antimachia Castle was built in the 13th century by the Venetians and later expanded by the Knights of St. John. Its mighty external walls are most impressive but only a few cisterns and two small chapels remain. Fascinating landscapes and the historic monuments of many epoques make the Greek island of Kos a sparkling jewel of the Aegean.

Κως Kos ANCIENT GREECE Asclepeion
Η Κως είναι νησί του Αιγαίου. Έχει πληθυσμό 34.280 κατοίκους (απογραφή 2011) και είναι το τρίτο μεγαλύτερο νησί της Δωδεκανήσου σε έκταση μετά τη Ρόδο και την Κάρπαθο και το δεύτερο σε πληθυσμό μετά τη Ρόδο. Η επιφάνεια του νησιού είναι 290,3 τ.χλμ. με ακτογραμμή 112 χιλιομέτρων. Πρωτεύουσα του νησιού είναι η Κως, όπου είναι και το κύριο λιμάνι του νησιού. Απέχει από τον Πειραιά 200 ναυτικά μίλια.
Είναι πλούσιο σε ιστορικά μνημεία νησί και παρουσιάζει αξιόλογο αρχαιολογικό και τουριστικό ενδιαφέρον. Αποκαλείται επίσης και «νησί του Ιπποκράτη», του πατέρα της ιατρικής, επειδή εκεί γεννήθηκε ο Ιπποκράτης. Η σημερινή Κως είναι ένα σύγχρονο τουριστικό νησί με πολλές δυνατότητες σε θέματα διαμονής, φαγητού, σπορ, εκδρομών, ψυχαγωγίας. Το πλέον αξιοσημείωτο στοιχείο που χαρακτηρίζει το νησί είναι οι ατελείωτοι ποδηλατόδρομοι, γι' αυτό και πολύ συχνά η Κως χαρακτηρίζεται ως το νησί του ποδηλάτου.
Το νησί κατοικήθηκε από τους Προϊστορικούς χρόνους. Αποικίστηκε αρχικά από τους Κάρες και στους ιστορικούς χρόνους δέχτηκε Δωριείς από την Αργολίδα. Τον 7ο-6ο αι. π.Χ., η Κως μαζί με τις πόλεις Κνίδο, Αλικαρνασσό, Ιάλυσο, Κάμειρο και Λίνδο, αποτέλεσε τη Δωρική εξάπολη. Το 500 π.Χ. κατακτήθηκε από τους Πέρσες, από τους οποίους ελευθερώθηκε το 479 π.Χ. και έγινε μέλος της Αθηναϊκής Συμμαχίας. Γνώρισε μεγάλη ανάπτυξη τον 4ο αι. π.Χ. κυρίως ύστερα από την εγκαθίδρυση της νέας πόλης της Κω (366 π.Χ.) στην Β.Α. ακτή του νησιού, στη θέση της σημερινής πρωτεύουσας. Στην Κω γεννήθηκε ο πατέρας της Ιατρικής Ιπποκράτης (460-357 π.Χ.), μετά το θάνατο του οποίου καθιερώθηκε στο νησί το Ασκληπιείο. Κατακτήθηκε από το Μέγα Αλέξανδρο το 366 π.Χ.
Τα σημάδια του χρόνου και της διαδρομής των πολιτισμών και των λαών που πέρασαν από την Κω είναι ζωντανά μέχρι και σήμερα. Από τη μυθολογική εποχή του Ηρακλή και του Βασιλιά Χάρμυλου και την Ελληνιστική εποχή του Ασκληπιείου, του αρχαίου σταδίου, της αρχαίας αγοράς και του αρχαίου θεάτρου μέχρι τη σημερινή εποχή με τις σύγχρονες υποδομές και τους οικισμούς της φέρουν τα σημάδια πολλών λαών και πολιτισμών...Για εκπαιδευτική χρήση...

En dan heb ik het nog rijkelijk omschreven
Lees je van ellende in twee dagen al je boeken uit
Want verder valt er echt geen donder te beleven
Ach lieten ze nou maar gewoon wat bruine beren los
Dan viel er nog es wat te lachen op het mooie Griekse eiland Kos
Dit eiland kun je makkelijk in krap één middag dromen
't Zijn twee bergen met daartussen in een dal
Ben ik daar verdomme helemaal uit Holland voor gekomen
Was er nou maar thuis een sterfgeval
Maar de kans dat je hier doodgaat is vele malen groter
Door een olijfolievergiftiging
Je zit er langer op 't toilet van dat je op vakantie bent
Het komt eruit zoals het er naar binnen ging
Twee vijgen- en een eucalyptusboom dat noemt men hier een bos
Nee het is hier zwaar behelpen op het mooie Griekse eiland Kos
Waarom men toch dit eiland naar een Noorse schaatser noemde
Dat is iets wat ik nog steeds niet weet
Maar je hoeft hier heus je schaatsen niet mee naartoe te nemen
Want oh god oh god, oh god wat is het heet
En als ik zo eens naar die Griekse letters kijk dan denk ik zó
De bevolking heeft hier gym of atheneum
Maar dat is schijn want kunst bestaat hier uit twee omgevallen stenen
En met een hek erom noemt men het een museum
En verder zie je enkel en alleen maar familie van de Tros
Je zou hier moeten mogen schieten op dit mooie Griekse eiland Kos
En nou moet ik hier verdomme nog twee weken langer blijven
De douane lijkt hier van het Duitse rijk
'k had van verveling een snor in mijn paspoort zitten tekenen
Ik mag pas weg als ik weer op mijn foto lijk....

Χ.).

Alexandra Hotel Kos Town Greece
Very nice city hotel in the center of Kos town near the bars, restaurants and shops. The rooms are spacious and clean with balcony. Some are with excellent view of the city and harbor others on hills. The nearest beach is about 600 m away. The city bus station for Mylos Beach and Ag. Fokas Beach is near. Breakfast is good. Pool is small. The gym is not bad.
