Zia church of Theotokou Koimiseos in Kos. In the mountain village of #Zia, there is this old church called the Zia church or more properly, the Theotokou Koimiseos Eastern #Orthodox church. It is small, with the typical white coloring on the outside with the blue roofs. Inside, it is filled with rich and colorful #iconography from Jesus, the saints and Mary. I beleive the church is not that old, only from 1906. Dodecanese is the name of a group of Greek islands that is located in the southeast of the Aegean Sea just off the Turkish coast. It warrants more than its name of ‘Twelve Islands’, as it contains more than 19 inhabited and around 50 small uninhabited islands.Kos is the green pearl of the Aegean, a historic oasis beneath the Greek sun. Not the largest of the Dodecanese Islands but certainly one of its most fascinating. The capital of the island is Chora Kos. Following their arrival from Jerusalem in the 14th century, the Order of the Knights of Malta built a huge fortified complex in the town.The city’s spacious square is surrounded by numerous buildings plus a museum. There are stone busts and statues of the Roman and Hellenistic eras that offer a good insight into the imaginative culture of a golden age. In the square, a number of steps lead up to the city’s cathedral, the Agia Paraskevi. Not a large structure but extremely modern and well located in the centre of the town.Only four kilometres from the city, high in the Dikeos Mountains is one of the island’s most important sights, the asklepieion, an ancient hospital and sanctuary. It was here that the Greeks worshipped the god of medicine who was later named Askulap by the Romans.Rhodes was one of the most important cities in antiquity and fended off attack due to its impressively tall defensive walls. The mighty-looking fortification was in reality a deception, as it was far from sturdy but its many defensive towers and pinnacles had their desired effect.Lindos is the most beautiful village in Rhodes with Paulus Bay and an acropolis that is located high above the sea.It was here that the sun was born and where the gods, knights and tourists have always sought good fortune and been captivated with the enchanting islands of the Dodecanese.

Great Cathedral Mystery
Cathedrals is a Christian church which contains the seat of a bishop, thus serving as the central church of a diocese, conference, or episcopate.Although the word cathedral is sometimes loosely applied, churches with the function of cathedral occur specifically and only in those denominations with an episcopal hierarchy, such as the Roman Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, and some Lutheran and Methodist churches.[2] In the Greek Orthodox Church, the terms kathedrikos naos (literally: cathedral shrine) is sometimes used for the church at which an archbishop or metropolitan presides. The term metropolis (literally mother city) is used more commonly than diocese to signify an area of governance within the church.
The word cathedral is derived from the Latin word cathedra (seat or chair), and refers to the presence of the bishop's or archbishop's chair or throne. In the ancient world, the chair was the symbol of a teacher and thus of the bishop's role as teacher, and also of an official presiding as a magistrate and thus of the bishop's role in governing a diocese.

Volos (Greek: Βόλος) (Population: 144.449 (2011)) is the 6th biggest city (with the 3rd largest industrial area and the 3rd largest port) in Greece, situated in Thessaly, almost in the middle of the distance between Athens (330 km) and Thessaloniki (220 km). Volos is an industrial city, with a large port - but there are a few hidden gems here that you might find as you pass through to islands or Pelion.
Archaeological site of Ancient Dimini, Dimini. Tues - Sun: 8.30AM - 4.30PM, Mon: closed.. Ancient Dimini was a neolithic village which has been excavated and uncovered. Of particular interest are the well preserved House N, where a pot was discovered beneath the floor with the burnt remains of a child (an ancient resident as opposed to a more recent one!) and the Tombi grave, similar to that at Mycenaea, which is buried deep into the ground near the fortified town, but with a caved in roof. Shade is spare, so make sure to visit early in the morning. Adjacent to these ruins, and to be opened soon (although how long this has been the case is not said!) are some Mycenaean ruins, which include a large palace. These ruins, whilst not open yet, can be viewed from behind a limit, and are expected to be part of the as-of-yet-undiscovered ancient city of Iolkos, the home of Jason (of Argonaut fame!) There is an interesting audio guide tour available for free in both Greek and English. €2 per person, students free. Ticket includes free entry to archaeological site at Sesklo. edit
Archaeological site of Ancient Sesklo, Sesklo (Take the road to Sesklo, then look for the turn-off to the left that goes down the hill before the start of Sesklo (it is signposted, but keep an eye open for them.). Sesklo is a more impressive site in terms of its location, but is less ims might change your first idea. Ermou street is a long paved road parallel to the promenade, Argonafton str, offering a wide variety of shops for any taste, plus a selection of hidden bars and cafes, especially around St.Nikolaos Square, the city cathedral, dedicated to patron saint of the sailors, St. Nicholas. There is a seaside park between the university Papastratos building and Agios Konstantinos church on the promenade. Anavros Park starts directly behind Agios Konstantinos and extends to the east all the way till Anavros beach, an open municipal strand, offering clearwater to the swimmer during the summer (and winter for the brave).
For those that have a car, there is also Alykes municipal beach, a 5-minute-drive from the center to the southwest, in the more easygoing Alykes district of Volos, having cafes and bars offering sunbeds on the sand during late at night, where you can enjoy your cocktail and take a swim as well. The municipal beach in Alykes has an entrance fee of € 1 during the day, offering a lifeguard, showering facilities, clothes-changing chambers and a beach bar. You can easily go to Alykes with city bus (blue bus) number 6 from the city hall.

There are acceptable beaches towards the southern end of the city at Anavros. To get there, follow the coastal promenade south from Argonafton St or park in the roads behind the city hospital. Most locals, however, head to beaches the other side of the giant cement works on the outskirts of the city, to beaches at Agria (20 mins by bus) or further down the coast. Generally, the water is clearer and cleaner the further away from Volos' port. But, Anavros is acceptable and many many locals do swim there. But seriously, if you do have a car and you want to go to a beach, it is well worth getting out of the city limits and beyond - some of the best beaches on the Greek mainland can be found on Pelion.

Exploring Islands Greece: ABANDONED City and wildlife
The island of Aegina and the island of Moni are two islands close to Athens. I explored these islands and even made an incredible discovery: an abandoned city. I also saw some interesting wildlife on Moni island. Join me on this trip.
CONCEPT FOR MEGA BYZANTINE CATHEDRAL !!!
My plans for what would be the largest Byzantine Cathedral in the world. Original concept i designed, in x-ray view to show internal/external features. Renders coming soon.
Championing the revisiting of past archaeological typologies (in this case late Byzantine 6th century ad) in fusion with futuristic machine-age elements (rather than despite) to create new and innovative design through diachronic harmony is my inspiration. My design entails a fusion of Late Byzantine archaeological typology and Futuristic Machine-Age motifs. I'm a great admirer of the Late Byzantine structures of the Eastern Roman Empire, the architecture and archaeological typology has a timeless futuristic (almost Organic Alien) quality with all the organic domes/curves and geometric motifs, whilst retaining a rustic ancient feel (heavy stone masonry, vaulted entablature, gilded metals etc). The aesthetic dichotomy between rustic ancient realism/futuristic innovative technology is apt here in my idea, now with the introduction of internal steel frames and the intricate stone masonry resting upon these beams, far greater and ambitious monumental architecture in both the exterior/interior can be realised surpassing earlier Byzantine examples. Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles who worked on Byzantine 'Hagia Sophia' had to utilise two semi-domes and buttresses to hold a fairly modest central dome, here in comparison the dome is over quadruple the size upon an octagonal central-domed pendentive resting on a sea of ornate semi-domes/lesser domes made able by both traditional buttresses and importantly columns of steel-frames ensconced within marble stone masonry (akin to skyscraper technology), thus giving a sense of harmony and weightlessness both in the interior and exterior. Everything in my architectural design including every single one of the hundreds of Corinthian columns and domes and stone masonry are designed totally from scratch by myself, using high frequency polygons for accuracy and unsurpassed detail. The four main arches holding the majority of the weight are held up by eight towers, themselves consisting of multiple Corinthian columns and Byzantine marbled geometric motifs, counterbalanced by the flying-buttresses externally on all sides at the base. This colossal mountain of stone masonry and craftsmanship would be an imposing feature in any modern metropolis, attempting to portray the monumental nature and purpose of the build, seen here competing in scale with St. Peter's Basilica in the Western tradition or even Ulm Minster.
