Košice (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Košice in Slovakia.
The ancient royal city of Košice was once the centre of Northern Hungary and is today located in eastern Slovakia. In the fourteenth century it was granted many privileges and became a city of goldsmiths and bell-founders and also an important trading city. The Gothic Saint Elizabeth Cathedral characterises the architectural ensemble of the Old Town. It was named after the Hungarian king's daughter, Elisabeth, who was married to the Thuringian landgrave, Ludwig The Fourth, and who lived on the Wartburg. From 1380, and influenced by French architecture, the construction of the cathedral took a hundred and thirty years to complete. It was not until the end of the nineteenth century, and in corresponding spirit, that it was radically adapted according to Neo Gothic design. In the middle of a large market place, playful water fountains entertain beneath shady trees. In time with the music, the water jets perform balletic movements that never fail to attract many onlookers. Next, a freestanding carillon that has twenty two bells which ring out hourly with the melodies of east Slovakian folk songs. The East-Slovakian Museum is one of Slovakia’s oldest museums and contains the history of the city and surrounding area. It is also where the Golden Treasure Of Košice can be admired in full: almost three thousand gold coins from eighty one European mints dating from the fifteenth to the seventeenth centuries, plus a Renaissance gold chain. Košice became a powerful centre of both trade and culture and one of the largest and most prosperous cities of mediaeval times.

St Elizabeth's Cathedral (Dom Svatej Alzbety) in Kosice, Slovakia
The Cathedral of St Elisabeth is a Gothic cathedral in Košice.
It is Slovakia's largest church and one of the easternmost Gothic cathedrals in Europe.
The record of the existence of Kassa (modern day Košice), dating from 1230, is connected with the existence of the rectory church. In the process of the settlement's transformation from a rural community into a town, all its periods of successes and failures have been reflected in St Elisabeth's Cathedral.
According to historical and archaeological sources, the present-day cathedral was built on the place of an earlier church also consecrated to St Elisabeth of Hungary. It was referred to in documents of 1283 and 1290, in which the bishop of Eger Andrew II exempted Košice parish from the dean's sphere of jurisdiction.
St Elisabeth Cathedral is the largest Church in Slovakia with a total area of 1,200 square metres and capacity of more than 5000 people. It is the main church in the Košice Archdiocese. It is one of the most eastern Gothic cathedrals in Europe.
The church is 60 metres long and 36 metres wide; the height of the north tower is 59 metres. The central nave is 24 m long and aisles are 12 m long. Construction of the church influenced builders' activity in surrounding towns such as Prešov, Bardejov, Sabinov, Rožňava and it also influenced construction of other churches in Poland and Transylvania.
The Gothic Cathedral of Košice consists of the choir with a five-side chavet, five naves, two towers, a level sacristy at the north side, and two chapels and antechapel at the south side. There is a unique inside layout of the church, where the central nave and four aisles are crossed in the middle by one transept of the same height and width as the central nave which altogether create a Greek cross.
This big central space rises in the centre of the church and together with three equal exterior gables with richly decorated portals belong to the acme of medieval stone work of art in the Middle Europe. The complex of the cathedral and adjacent buildings – St Michael Chapel and Urban Tower were declared as Cultural Heritage Monuments in 1970.
In 1970, St Elisabeth Cathedral was declared a National Cultural Monument. All the profiled architectural features (pinnacles, gargoyles, gadroons) had been either destroyed by the rain water or were unmounted. The stone decoration at the north portal was very much affected by weathering. Cathedral reconstruction started again in September 1978 with detailed architectural documentation. After a short break, works started again in 1984.
In the meantime authorities started with the complex solution of Košice centrum monuments innovation, which was in 1983 declared as the biggest town monuments reservation in Slovakia. One of the factors that contributed to higher care of church was excluding motor-vehicle traffic from the main street in 1984 and tram traffic in 1986.
During the reconstruction it was decided to use a method of a maintaining the stage from the big reconstruction at the end of the 19th century. First the roof of the main and side aisles was repaired where the ceramic coloured enamel tiles were changed, but with the original pattern from the 19th century. The flèche was reconstructed and it was necessary to add 264 pieces of lead decorations.
From 1980–92 the most damaged part of the chapel and sacristy were reconstructed. The works were done by the Polish company Polskie Pracownie Konserwacji Zabytków from Vratislav. It was necessary to construct the new crown gardoons, gargoyles and pinnacles – according to the accessible documents and projects from the town's archival collection. Similarly the staircase towers were done. The gargoyles' reconstruction was done according to original Medieval patterns which are retained in the museums. This reconstruction included the interior repair of a chapel.
In 1992–95 the south façade, including windowpanes was done. The Sigimund's tower was under consistent renovation in 1995–97 when a rococo copper helmit was replaced. Cleaned and gilded plumbing decorations are originals from 1775. In 2008 reconstruction of the Rákóczi crypt was finished and in 2009 reconstruction of the most precious north portal was finished.
Today there is renovation work at the exterior of the north façade of the church and the west portal and interior of the crossed north aisle. The Matthias tower is awaiting reconstruction.
The base of the space composition is formed by the central nave with five bays which is divided by the cross aisle with one bay in axis. Apparent substitution of an idea are four subordinate spaces, inset into the ground plan of the building and inserted between the arms of main and cross aisle. In the first decades probably the enclosure walls were built and the main outline of space disposition was finished.

Travel Slovakia 2012 - Košice Christmas - Košicke Vianoce
Košice Christmas 2012. Vesele Vianoce. A stastlivy Novy Rok.
Košice, with 234000 citizens, is the second largest town in Slovakia after the capital. It is situated in the eastern part of the country, close to the border with Hungary (20 km) on the south, Ukraine on the east (80 km) and Poland on the north (90 km).
The town is located in the valley of the River Hornád; on the west it is surrounded by Slovak mountain Slovenské rudohorie. Košice is the Eastern Slovakia's centre of culture, industry, commerce, administration and science.
Slovakia's second largest city is a historic treasure trove, as well as a lively melting pot of nationalities. The Old Town's (stare mesto) pedestrian -- only cobble -- stone main square is lined with baroque and neo-classical mansions. In fact, Kosice has the largest preserved urban area in the country. It also has Slovakia's most beautiful cathedral in the middle of the oval-shaped main square.

Košice is the largest city in eastern Slovakia and in 2013 was the European Capital of Culture (together with Marseille, France). It is situated on the river Hornád at the eastern reaches of the Slovak Ore Mountains, near the border with Hungary. With a population of approximately 240,000 Košice is the second largest city in Slovakia after the capital Bratislava.
Being the economic and cultural centre of eastern Slovakia, Košice is the seat of the Košice Region and Košice Self-governing Region, the Slovak Constitutional Court, three universities, various dioceses, and many museums, galleries, and theatres. Košice is an important industrial centre of Slovakia, and the U.S. Steel Košice steel mill is the largest employer in the city. The town has extensive railway connections and an international airport.
The city has a well-preserved historical centre, which is the largest among Slovak towns. There are many heritage protected buildings in Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Art Nouveau styles with Slovakia's largest church: the St. Elisabeth Cathedral. The long main street, rimmed with aristocratic palaces, Catholic churches, and townsfolk's houses, is a thriving pedestrian zone with many boutiques, cafés, and restaurants. The city is well known as the first settlement in Europe to be granted its own coat-of-arms.
The first evidence of inhabitance can be traced back to the end of the Paleolithic era. The first written reference to the Hungarian town of Kassa (as the royal village – Villa Cassa) comes from 1230. After the Mongol invasion in 1241, King Béla IV of Hungary invited German colonists to fill the gaps in population. The city was in the historic Abauj County of the Kingdom of Hungary.
The city was made of two independent settlements: Lower Kassa and Upper Kassa, amalgamated in the 13th century around the long lens-formed ring, of today's Main Street. The first known town privileges come from 1290. The city grew quickly because of its strategic location on an international trade route from agriculturally rich central Hungary to central Poland, itself along a greater route connecting the Balkans and the Adriatic and Aegean seas to the Baltic Sea. The privileges given by the king were helpful in developing crafts, business, increasing importance (seat of the royal chamber for Upper Hungary), and for building its strong fortifications. In 1307, the first guild regulations were registered here and were the oldest in Kingdom of Hungary. As a Hungarian free royal town, Kassa reinforced the king's troops in the crucial moment of the bloody Battle of Rozgony in 1312 against the strong aristocratic Palatine Amadé Aba (family). In 1347, it became the second place city in the hierarchy of the Hungarian free royal towns with the same rights as the capital Buda. In 1369, it received its own coat of arms from Louis I of Hungary. The Diet convened by Louis I in Kassa decided that women could inherit the Hungarian throne.

The significance and wealth of the city in the end of the 14th century was mirrored by the decision to build a completely new church on the grounds of the previously destroyed smaller St. Elisabeth Church. The construction of the biggest cathedral in the Kingdom of Hungary – St. Elisabeth Cathedral – was supported by the Emperor Sigismund, and by the apostolic see itself. Since the beginning of the 15th century, the city played a leading role in the Pentapolitana – the league of towns of five most important cities in Upper Hungary (Bártfa, Locse, Kassa, Eperjes, and Kisszeben). During the reign of King Hunyadi Mátyás the city reached its medieval population peak. With an estimated 10,000 Hungarian inhabitants, it was among the largest medieval cities in Europe. The history of Kassa was heavily influenced by the dynastic disputes over the Hungarian throne, which together with the decline of the continental trade brought the city into stagnation. Vladislaus III of Varna failed to capture the city in 1441. John Jiskra's mercenaries from Bohemia defeated Tamás Székely's Hungarian army in 1449. John I Albert, Prince of Poland, could not capture the city during a six-month-long siege in 1491. In 1526, the city homaged for Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor. John Zápolya captured the city in 1536 but Ferdinand I reconquered the city in 1551 In 1554.
10 Things You Didn't Know About Kosice, Slovakia by Patrik Kacerik
Kosice is a fascinating crossroads of modern and historical Europe. It was recognized in 2013 as the European Capital of Culture. Below are 10 things you probably didn't now about this beautiful city.
The Kosice Peace Marathon is Europe's oldest marathon, and the second oldest in the world. It happens the first weekend in October.
The first European coat of arms was granted to Kosice in 1369.
The city center features Slovakia's longest promenade as well as it's best preserved historical district.
Kosice was a gateway between east and west in the past, and today it still serves as a gateway to six nearby UNESCO World Heritage Sites, four national parks, the Tatra mountains, and the world-famous Tokaj wine region featuring cellars built 400-600 years ago.
In the 13th century after the Mongol invasion, Hungarian King Bela IV invited Germans to settle in depopulated areas around Kosice. It was the start of the region becoming a melting pot of Eastern Europe with Germans, Slavik tribes, and Hungarians living side-by-side.
Located in the heart of the city, St. Elisabeth Cathedral is Slovakia's largest church.
In the past 100 years, Kosice has been part of the Austria-Hungary empire, then became part of Czechoslovakia after World War One, then became part of Hungary from 1938-1945, then became part of Czechoslovakia again until the Czech Republic and Slovakia peacefully split in 1993.
Kosice has 20,000 registered businesses with only 250,000 citizens. Its history as a business and creative center continues through today.
The oldest continually operating hotel in Slovakia is in Kosice, with a rich history dating back to 1869.
Kosice has the biggest zoo in Central Europe.

Banska Stiavnice (Slovakia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Banska Stiavnice in Slovakia.
Banská Štiavnica is one of the most beautiful cities in Slovakia and whose historic buildings form its mediaeval centre. The old town, and silver mines of the surrounding area, have been designated as a World Cultural Heritage Site. The Kammer-Hof was created by the combination of three Gothic buildings during the sixteenth century. Up until the nineteenth century, the mining chamber and the first technical university in the world were located there. The Church Of The Assumption Of Mary was built by the Dominican Order at the beginning of the thirteenth century. For the first time in this region a rib vault was raised in its construction and served as a model for further buildings. However, at the beginning of the nineteenth century the church burned down and was rebuilt in Classical style. Now its altars and paintings shine out in all their glory and highlight the deep religious faith of both miners and mine owners alike. Since 1971, the New Castle has been a museum. On one floor, musical instruments, household items and clothing. Another floor contains numerous weapons and suits of armour which were used during hostilities by the Turks. The city underwent troubled times and its prosperity had to be defended. The wealth of the city and its mining of silver made Banská Štiavnica wealthy and created its historical splendour.
