Travel Japan - Shrine of a 1000 Steps (Kotohira-gu)
Kotohira-gu Shrine, familiarly called Konpira-san, is located in western Kagawa, halfway up Mt. Zozu-san at an altitude of 521 meters. The protector deity for seafarers is enshrined there. Konpira is also said to protect people's health and guard against evil, and it has been a site of worship since olden times. During the Edo Period, in the 18th century, making a pilgrimage to Konpira became quite a fad. Even today, a steady flow of worshipers coming from all over Japan continues.
The approach to the Main Sanctuary halfway up Mt. Zozu-san has some 785 stone steps, and another 1,368 stone steps climb up to the Inner Shrine. When you stand in front of the Main Sanctuary, you receive a bird's eye view of the Sanuki Plain. You can even hire a palanquin bearer to carry you up the steps to the Dai-mon Gate, halfway up the approach way.
In the areas surrounding the approach way, there remain many historic sites, such as the tall lantern that used to be the landmark of Konpira pilgrimages and Saya-hashi Bridge. The town of Kitohira also welcomes a number of visitors to its Konpira-onsen Hot Spring Village.

Kotohiragu Shrine Travel Guide - 1368 steps to the top!
A travel guide for visiting the Kotohira-gu Shrine in Kotohira Japan. Also known as Konpira-san, this shrine is one of Japan's most difficult ascents, requiring visitors to climb 1,368 to reach the inner shrine.
Kotohira Shrine - Konpirasan in Cherry Blossom Season ✿ 金刀比羅宮●こんぴらさん●琴平町 ✿ Japan As It Truly Is
Come see the whole Konpirasan from the bottom to the very top--what others left out--at the peak of the cherry blossoms.
Konpirasan, or Kotohiragu, in Kotohira, Kagawa Prefecture is a well known shrine for seafaring with a 1368 stair climb up Mt. Zozu to a magnificent view over the whole area. And the height of cherry blossom season is one of the very best times to see it.
While this video is much longer than planned, there is simply so much to see and experience - and what you see is just the start of all there is.
You might ask why a mariners shrine would be located up an inland mountain - but Mt. Zozu is prominently seen from the Inland Sea, and so from a time so long ago it's lost in history, people have gone up to Konpirasan to worship for safe passage, as well as nearly everything else these days. Some interesting things you will see on the way up is a bronze dog (people far away would hire a person to take a dog with their offering when they could not go), a ship tanker's propeller, several families selling sweets just after the large Daimon gate (limited to 5 families, who have served the shrine for even 25 generations), a horse, and next to the main hall a mini-submarine with dedicated pictures of ships people gave with requested safety while at sea. Over 3 million people go to visit Konpirasan annually, and if you have the chance, someday you should be one as well!

Kotohira: You wont believe this Japanese shrine (Breathtaking)
#japaneseshrine #Japan #kotohira
Kotohira: I went to the most amazing shrine I visited in Shikoku, Japan. Many steps were literally taken to ascend this spectacular shrine in Kotohira. Kotohira-gu is one of japans most renowned and famous shrines and although its quite the trek up to the top with many steps to get to the top of the shrine it remains one of the best shrines in Shikoku and one of the best things to do in Japan.
If you have a hunger for exploring traditional Japan and enjoy peaceful shrines then this is one of the best things to do in Japan as it truly is Japan as it truly is.
The island of Shikoku continues to take my breath away and I hope that this shrine tour will do the the same and help you relive my experience in Kotohira, Shikoku.

Kotohira Shrine 《Kagawa Japan》
Dedicated to the guardian god of the sea, the ancient Kotohiragu Shrine in Konpira is nationally renowned. Every year many pilgrims make the journey to Konpira, where reaching the main shrine requires a hike up 785 stone stairs, or 1368 to the farthest shrine.
Visitors to the shrine also enjoy the nearby kabuki theater Kanamaru-za, the oldest of its type in Japan. Konpira onsen is another popular spot.

Konpira san | konpira shrine | kotohira shrine
Kotohira-gū (金刀比羅宮?) (also known as Konpira-dai-gongen (金比羅大権現?), Konpira-san (こんぴらさん?), or Konpira Shrine in English) is a Shintō shrine in the town of Kotohira in Nakatado District of Kagawa Prefecture, Japan.
Located at 521m halfway to the top of Mount Zōzu, the shrine stands at the end of a long path, with 785 steps to the main shrine and a total of 1,368 steps to the inner shrine. Since the Muromachi Period pilgrimages to the shrine became popular, and even today usually hundreds of visitors in a day climb the steps of Mount Zōzu. On the way to the shrine is a sake museum, stores, and stones with the names of donors carved in kanji.

Lonely Japan Shrine shrine ロンリー日本神社神社 - Abandoned Japan 日本の廃墟
I found this beautiful old shrine after following an overgrown trail leading off from a small road in the mountains of central Japan. The shrine passed an old cemetery and stone statues of Jizo and followed the course of a very old stone water channel where small black salamanders swam lazily in the slow current. The shrine was made up of two buildings including a small balcony structure at the front where community members likely gather during festivals as well as the main shrine structure in back. The shrine structure housed five separate wooden shrines enclosed beneath a protective structure which is open in the front. The inside of the shrine building was very dark and I do apologize for the poor quality of the video.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.
