Kamakura Daibutsu (Great Buddha 大仏), Kamakura, Japan
Kamakura Daibutsu (鎌倉大仏) Temple (actual temple name is Kotoku-in Temple) is located in the suburbs of Kamakura district of Kanagawa prefecture in Japan. The main attraction at this temple is the very large seated Buddha statue called Daibutsu.
This Daibutsu (Great Buddha) statue was cast in bronze in 1252. The height of the statue is about 35 feet and it weighs 100000 Kilos (100 Tonnes). This statue is the second largest bronze cast, seated Great Buddha statue in Japan. The largest one is in the Todaiji temple in Nara prefecture.
You can also climb into the Buddha statue, through a small and narrow staircase.
The original Daibutsu statue was inside a temple and under a roof but during the tsunami in 1495, the temple was washed away leaving the Daibutsu statue in it's place. Since then, it is decided to build around the statue and the Daibutsu statue has been left as it is, without a roof.
It is a great sight to watch this statue with the great mountain range background.
Enjoy!!!

Japan Great Buddha Kamakura Daibutsu
The Great Buddha of Kamakura was cast in 1252 and was housed inside a temple. In the 15th century, a tsunami washed away the structure of the temple and the statue has sat in the open ever since.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura
Visit to the grounds of Kotokuin Temple for an upclose look at Kamakura Daibutsu, the Great Buddha of Kamakura. This bronze statue of Amida Buddha is nearly 44 feet high and weighs over 120 tons. Temple records indicate the Buddha was constructed in 1252 AD, making it over 760 years old.
Japan's Great Buddha of Kamakura - Kotokuin Daibutsu (高徳院大仏) - Japan As It Truly Is
One of the icons of Japan, the Great Buddha is in the Kotoku-in Temple in Kamakura City. It was completed in 1252 and replaced a previous wooden one that lasted only 9 years. It used to be housed in a wooden building, but storms kept destroying the housing, and finally after a tsunami in 1498 the statue was left in the open.
If you see it, be sure to go around back and go inside it as well (there's a small extra fee).
To get there, from Kamakura Station take the Enoden line to Hase Station, and go on foot a few minutes to the Daibutsu.
NOTE: Jan-Mar 2016 the Great Buddha will be closed for cleaning.

Giant Buddha, Kamakura, Japan (2008).
The Great Buddha of Kamakura is a monumental outdoor bronze statue of Amitābha Buddha located at the Kōtoku-in Temple in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. The bronze statue probably dates from 1252, in the Kamakura period, according to temple records. It was preceded by a giant wooden Buddha, which was completed in 1243 after ten years of continuous labor, the funds having been raised by Lady Inada (Inada-no-Tsubone) and the Buddhist priest Jōkō of Tōtōmi. That wooden statue was damaged by a storm in 1248, and the hall containing it was destroyed, so Jōkō suggested making another statue of bronze, and the huge amount of money necessary for this and for a new hall was raised for the project.[

Kōtoku-in, Great Buddha of Kamakura - Japan
Kōtoku-in (高徳院?) is a Buddhist temple of the Jōdo-shū sect in the city of Kamakura in Kanagawa Prefecture, and one of the most famous icons of Japan. When we visited the place there was snowing. What a beautiful surrounding.
When you visit Japan don’t forget to visit the place. If you are a SriLankan you must visit here. There is a monument to honour the vital part played by our late President, J R Jayewardene during the San Francisco Peace conference held in September 1951
Kamakura Daibutsu - Kanagawa - 大仏 - 4K Ultra HD
Kanagawa Kamakura Daibutsu - 大仏 - 4K Ultra HD : Sitting proudly within the confines of the the Kotoku-In temple, the Great Buddha statue, or Daibutsu is another very popular religious attraction of Kamakura. Despite its overall sense of serenity, the Daibutsu had a rather tumultuous history! It all started in 1233 when the good people of Kotoku-In decided to erect a giant wooden representation of Buddha. After a good decade of hard labor the gorgeous wooden wonder was finally unveiled to all. Unfortunately, in 1248 a storm destroyed both the wooden statue and its hall.
Realising that wood was too fragile, it was decided to build yet another statue of Buddha by this time in bronze. Finished in 1252, the bronzed version of the wooden Buddha statue is the statue that you can enjoy today in Kotoku-In.
While the Daibutsu itself was built to withstand the worst conditions, its main protective hall was not so lucky and was destroyed by powerful storms in 1334 and in 1369, as well as in 1498 by a devastating tsunami. Unphased by the elements, the Daibutsu was still standing proudly and serene as before. It was after the 1498 tsunami that it was decided to let Daibutsu remain standing in the open air.
Finally and according to Kotoku-In record, the Daibutsu measure 13.35m with a total weight of around 121 tonnes.
