Kowdiar Palace ????✨✨
Pure bliss! ????
We visited Princess Aswathy Thirunal Gowri Lakshmi Bayi of the Travancore Royal Family at Kowdiar Palace, Trivandrum.
The historically-rich Kowdiar palace is believed to be the most beautiful of the lot and was built in 1934 by the late Maharaja Sree Chithira Thirunal on the occasion of his sister's (Maharani Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi) wedding to Lt. Col. G. V. Raja.
The princess was kind enough to take us around the palace, and showed us the most amazing original Raja Ravi Varma paintings!
With a magical smile she spelled open seasame and behind a sliding door we got to see the first wooden stigler lift of Kerala. ????
She told us stories, that we absorbed with awe and felt privileged to just be in such amazing surroundings with true blue blood royalty ????
There are 150 rooms in the palace and is three-storied. It also has six magnificent steeples heralding the grandeur of this edifice and can be seen from across the city.

Kowdiar Palace (കവടിയാര് കൊട്ടാരം) in Trivandrum, Kerala, India was built in 1934 by Maharajah Sree Chithira Thirunal, on the occasion of the Pallikettu (wedding) of his only sister, Maharani Karthika Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi with Lt. After the Constitutional Amendment of 1971, the properties and estates of the royal family were partitioned and divided equally among the branches of the two Travancore Queens, Sethu Lakshmi Bayi and Sethu Parvathi Bayi. This Palace belongs to the heirs of Sethu Parvathi Bayi as it was built by her son Maharajah Sree Chithira Thirunal.
Kowdiar Palace's architectural work is famous and has over 150 rooms. The entry to this palace is restricted as it is the private residence of the royal family settled in Thiruvananthapuram.

Kanakakunnu Palace, Trivandrum, Kerala, India ( Thiruvananthapuram ) | Kerala tourism
Kanakakkunnu palace
Kanakakkunnu palace located about 800 meters north east of the Napier Museum in the heart of Trivandrum city, Kanakakunnu Palace is one of the last architectural vestiges of the colonial era. Built during the reign of Travancore king Sree Moolam Thirunal (1885−1924), the palace served as the main venue for royal banquets. Later Swathi Thirunal, one of Travancore’s popular rulers, refurbished the palace and constructed tennis courts in the premises. He also did use it for a few years as a summer retreat. Boasting a Kerala style facade, the Travancore royal family used the house to entertain guests. Inside you will see massive crystal chandeliers and an array of exquisite pieces of royal furniture – a testimony to the lavish lifestyle of the Thirunal kings who had a penchant for music and art. Add to it a picturesque setting on the crest of a small hill lush with meadows, grooves and flowering shrubs.
Now under the Kerala government’s wing, the palace complex walls-in the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium and Sooryakanthi auditorium. A popular haunt of culture vultures in the city, the auditoriums are the venues for various cultural meets and programs. The prestigious All India Dance Festival aka Nishagandhi festival is hosted annually by the Department of Tourism at the Nishagandhi open-air auditorium. Indian classical dance exponents from across the country come down to participate in the festival.

Travancore Royal Family in 2010
Interview visuals of Sri Uthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma (born 22 March 1922- is the present titular Maharaja of Travancore since 1991 and head of the Travancore Royal Family) by Doordarshan. The history of Travancore begins with Marthanda Varma who inherited the kingdom of Venad, and expanded it into Travancore during his reign 1729-- 1758. The rulers of Travancore were Malayala Kshatriyas belonging to Samanthan Nair caste.[10][11] The Samanthan Nairs (Nambiars, Adiyodees, Pillai, Kurups etc.) followed a matrilineal system of inheritance known as Marumakkathayam.in Travancore (and in Malabar and Kochi), the social status and freedom of women were high. In many communities, the daughters (not the sons) inherited the property right up to 1925, were educated, and had the right to divorce and remarry.Travancore was also characterized by the popularity of its rulers. When the Kings of Travancore 'declared themselves as servants of Lord Vishnu and ruled His State according to His wishes' it was not a mere lip service. The Kings of Travancore, unlike their counter-parts in the other Princely States of India, utilized only a small portion of their State's resources for their personal use.All members of the ruling family receive two names, an official personal name and a name associated with the star under which they are born. The latter usually end with the suffix Tirunal. The last ruler of Travancore was Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma AD 1931--1949. He made the temple entry proclamation on 12 November 1936, which opened all the Kshetrams (Hindu temples in Kerala) in Travancore to all Hindus, a privilege reserved to only upper caste Hindus till then. This act won him praise from across India, most notably from Mahatma Gandhi.Thiruvananthapuram Doordarshan's OnamSpecial program visuals, telecast on Tuesday, August 24, 2010.Edited for YouTube. Unwanted audio recorded during my capture is regretted.
