Tour of the frozen upper falls and run around the Kozjak lake in complete solitude on fresh snow. My little snowplow is on a leash because of the park rules. It took us 4 hours for 15 kilometers.

Stunning Winter Croatia: The Husky and UNESCO World Heritage Site
There have been some spectacular videos coming out of Croatia in recent weeks highlighting its winter beauty. In what we plan to be our last on the subject, visit the UNESCO Plitvice Lakes through the eyes of a husky on virgin snow. Famous for its endless sun and fantastic beaches, when people think of the weather in Croatia, these are the images which are usually conjured up. But the country is breathatking, whatever the season, and the success of Advent in Zagreb, coupled with the unusual site of Dubrovnik covered in snow, have highlighted how magical Croatia is in the wintertime. And just one last video - we think... - for perhaps the most breathaking destination of all, and one which attracted over a million tourists last year. The UNESCO World Heritage Site that is Plitvice Lakes. With frozen waterfalls and virgin snow, what better way to experience it than a walk with the dog? All that remains is to include Ante's introduction, then sit back and watch the winter magic of Croatia unfold. Wow! total-croatia-news

A beautiful footage by a local trail runner (and alpinist, and MTB biker) Ante Tonči Fabris from our most visited Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera. I have a winter trip to Plitvice for quite some time on my mind, but maybe I should move it up on a priority list!

Plitvička Jezera (Croatia) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Plitvička Jezera in Croatia.
Hidden within the densely wooded mountain region of Mala Kapela is Croatia’s most famous natural landmark, the Plitvička Jezera Nature Park, a land of cascading lakes. It is a well-protected natural environment which developed in travertin synclines, a world of water and exceptional plant life. Caves such as the Šupljara Cave, situated within a ravine at Lower Lake were created many thousands of years ago. Erosion and corrosion in the karst caused cracks in the limestone layer and gradually carved out its wide limestone ravine. For seven kilometres sixteen lakes have formed within a gorge, similar to the links of a chain, and connected by various cascades and waterfalls. It is a strange area, full of mystique and for centuries, long forgotten, a no-man's-land of wonderful nature. There are the Upper and Lower Lakes. They differ not only in their location but particularly in their geological features. The Upper Lakes are located on a Dolomit base which forms the typical features of stream dolines and wooded subsidence whereas, in contrast, the Lower Lakes are situated within rocky limestone. Kozjak Lake is more than two kilometres long and stretches in a north-south direction framed by dense forests which extend to the shores of the lake. There are no footpaths, only tranquil boat trips that take travellers to the Lower Lakes. Depending on the quantity of available water, the white foam of the magnificent Veliki Slap Waterfall and its rushing waters produces a swirling mist created by millions of water droplets as onlookers enjoy the soothing drizzle. A constantly changing landscape, the Plitvice Lakes are a true miracle of nature.

Magic of Plitvice Lakes National Park in Croatia with Family
See more details on the blog:
Croatia is famous for it's coast but it should also be famous for its National Parks. Croatian national parks have tons of waterfalls (at least the two main ones) and they are gorgeous but of the two, Plitvice National Park in Croatia is much more dramatic and visited. We were there in December and it was almost empty with cool and foggy weather. The lakes were so colorful and the beech forest was dramatic are easy to get to from both Split and Zagreb. We even made friends with a kitty.

Exploring Plitvice Lakes National Park - Croatia
Trust us, Plitvice (PLEET-veet-seh) Lakes National Park is one of Europe’s hidden gems. We visited during March when prices are 3x LESS (than during the peak season) and crowds are at an epic low. Our admission fee was only $8 per person. The price includes access to all of the trails, a boat ride on Lake Kozjak, and a panoramic train ride that picks you up at the finish line and takes you back to the starting point. After doing almost no research and just “showing up,” the beauty of the park blew us away. It was totally unexpected.
Here’s a simple fact you may not know; Croatians love to walk. The park is laid out in a simple and easy to follow one-way direction. You begin on one end of the park and a train will take you back to the “starting” line upon completion. The amazing waterfalls and ever-changing landscape contributes to the fact that, without realizing it, you’ve covered approximately 5 miles of territory. The boardwalk elevated over the running waters, water grass, aquatic life, and waterfalls simply melts the stresses of daily life away.
After leaving the area, you’re sure to hear the relaxing sound of running water humming through your body and mind for hours to come. This peace and serenity the park offers is one of the main reasons we rank this as a must see in Europe. If you don’t think you’ll get a chance to visit (in the near future), or just want to reward yourself with a quick 2 minutes of relaxation, check out the video below.
Quick Note: No need to bring lunch necessarily. The café at the boat dock offers quite a large assortment of choices. Since we brought lunch we opted for the cappuccinos.

Croatian Water World // Plitvice Lakes National Park
Being Croatia's most popular tourist attraction, I had to make a stop at Plitvice Lakes National Park. There is alot of hiking to be done in this 300 square kilometer park which is even more difficult with the cold rainy weather I ended up having during my visit. Despite the cold, wet, muddy, tiring, and trying nature of this endeavor, it was all worth it to taken in these views with less crowds than normal.

Plitvice lakes during the winter... each day on the lakes is unique and a frozen paradise during winter. Croatia's Plitvice Lakes become a winter wonderland.
Plitvice Lakes National Park was founded in 1949 is located in the central part of Croatia and covers an expanse of almost 30,000 hectares and is situated in the mountainous karst area of central Croatia, at the border to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Plitvice Lakes National Park (Croatian: Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera) is one of the oldest and the largest national park in Croatia.
In 1979, Plitvice Lakes National Park was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register.
In winter, the waterfalls are frozen and the trees bend under the weight of snow; these landscapes seem to have leapt from the pages of a fairytale indeed.
Each year, more than 1 million visitors are recorded. Entrance is subject to variable charges, up to 250 kuna or around €35 per adult in peak season.
The national park is world-famous for its lakes arranged in cascades. Currently, 16 lakes can be seen from the surface. These lakes are a result of the confluence of several small rivers and subterranean karst rivers. The lakes are all interconnected and follow the water flow. They are separated by natural dams of travertine, which is deposited by the action of moss, algae, and bacteria. The particularly sensitive travertine barriers are the result of an interplay between water, air and plants. The encrusted plants and bacteria accumulate on top of each other, forming travertine barriers which grow at the rate of about 1 cm (0.4 in) per year.
The lakes are renowned for their distinctive colors, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue. The colors change constantly depending on the quantity of minerals or organisms in the water and the angle of sunlight.
Through different climatic influences and the large difference in elevation within the protected area, a multifaceted flora and fauna has been created. The national park area is home to many endemic species.
The two largest lakes, Prošćansko jezero and Kozjak, cover about 80 percent of the overall water body area. These lakes are also the deepest, with a depth of 37 and 47 metres (121 and 154 ft) respectively. On Lake Kozjak, low-noise and ecologically-friendly electric boats are being used. None of the other lakes in the park exceeds 25 metres (82 feet) in depth. The altitude drop from the first lake to the last is 133 metres (436 feet).
The 16 lakes that can be seen from the surface are grouped into the 12 Upper Lakes (Gornja jezera) and the four Lower Lakes (Donja jezera).
