Gjástykki - Krafla - Leirhnjúkur - Mývatn - Iceland
Part-6 Flying around Lake Mývatn
Krafla is a caldera of about 10 km in diameter with a 90 km long fissure zone, in the north of Iceland in the Mývatn region. Its highest peak reaches up to 818 m; it has erupted 29 times and it is 2km in depth.
Krafla includes one of the two best-known Víti craters of Iceland (the other is in Askja). The Icelandic word víti means hell. In former times, people often believed hell to be under volcanoes. The crater Víti has a green lake inside of it.
The Krafla area also includes Námafjall, a geothermal area with boiling mudpools and steaming fumaroles.
The Mývatn fires occurred between 172429, when many of the fissure vents opened up. The lava fountains could be seen in the south of the island and a lava flow destroyed three farms near the village of Reykjahlíð, although nobody was harmed.
Between 1975 and 1984 there was a volcanic episode within the Krafla volcano. It involved nine volcanic eruptions and fifteen uplift and subsidence events. This interupted some of the Karfla drillfields. During these events a large magma chamber emerged. This has been identified by analysing the seismic activity. Since 1977 this chamber has been the source of the geothermal energy used by the 60 MW power station. A survey undertaken in 2006 indicated very high temperatures at depths of between 3 and 5 kilometrs and these favourable conditions have led to the development of the first well from the Iceland Deep Drilling Project

Trek : Svartifoss - Sjónarsker - Sel in Skaftafell natural park
The trail starts next to Skaftafell Visitor Centre and is well indicated. The first 250 meters go through the campground but the trail then turns right and uphill. Follow the signs until you arrive at a viewpoint above the waterfall (140 m ascent in 1.5 km). Continue down into the ravine, across the footbridge, and climb up the basalt column steps on the other side of the ravine. Continue on this trail to the viewpoint at Sjónarnípa, then head back towards the old turf house at Sel and then back to the visitor centre via Lambhagi.

Mývatn from the town of Skútustaðir
The Hverfjall crater, immediately east of Mývatn
Lava island in Lake Mývatn
Lake Mývatn was created about 2300 years ago by a large fissure eruption pouring out basaltic lava. The lava flowed down Laxárdalur Valley to the lowland plain of Aðaldalur where it entered the Arctic Ocean about 50 km away from Mývatn. The crater row that was formed on top of the eruptive fissure is called Þrengslaborgir (or Lúdentarborgir) and has often been used as a textbook example of this type of volcanic activity. There was a large lake in the area at the time, a precursor of the present-day Mývatn. When the glowing lava encountered the lake some of the water-logged lake sediment was trapped underneath it. The ensuing steam explosions tore the lava into small pieces which were thrown up into the air, together with some of the lake.
By repeated explosions in a number of locations, groups of craters built up and now dominate the landscape on the shore of Lake Mývatn and also form some of the islands in the lake. This type of lava formation is known as pseudocraters or rootless vents. A group of such craters at Skútustaðir on the south shore of the lake is protected as a natural monument and is frequented by tourists. Other pseudocrater groups in this lava field are in the Laxárdalur Valley and Aðaldalur. The formation of pseudocraters halted the advance of the lava in some places creating temporary lava lakes.

Skutustadir Iceland – Intriguing Myvatn Pseudocraters
The Pseudocraters at Skutustadagigar of Lake Myvatn are one of my favorites geological features in Iceland.
The geology behind the Pseudo-craters
Here is the information from the Myvatn visitor center where thay have very nice displays:
“The planet Mars has recently found to harbour a large groups of craters that seem to have formed by steam explosions as glowing hot lava flowed over frozen ground. Such “pseudocraters” from on Earth as lava runs over wet sedimenet or into the sea. Most of Earth’s pseudocraters are in Iceland and they are rare elsewhere. Scientific interest in them has increased after the Mars discovery. The pseudocrater by lake Myvatn are among the largest and most beautifully shaped on Earth.
The Myvatn pseudicraters were formed as lava entered a large lake (a precursor of Lake Myvatn), trapping its wet sediment underneath. First, many eruptions take place and a platform of fine-grained material is built up. Later, a few eruption vents take over, the water supply diminishes and well-shaped crater cones develop on top of the platform. The molten lava moves like a thin sheet inside a strationary crust. The lower crust breaks and the hot lava makes contact with the water-logged sediment underneath triggering violent steam eruptions. The lava continues to flow inside the crust envelope and feeds the steam eruptions.
Now the craters are covered by grass because midges fertilize the soil when they die.”
Midge is a term used to refer to many species of small flies. The term midge does not define any particular taxonomic group, but includes species in several families of non-mosquito Nematoceran Diptera.
Myvatn
Myvatn is a lake in the south of Thingeyjarsysla , close to Krafla . Mývatn is Iceland 's fourth largest lake , about 37 square kilometers in size. The water is rather shallow, or five meters deep. There are about 40 small islands in the water, and they are thought to give the water a distinctive look.

Dimmuborgir (Iceland) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Dimmuborgir in Iceland.
A few kilometres south of Reykjahlid, a tourist centre on Lake Myvatn, is one of the most unique and fascinating landscapes in Iceland. The Dimmuborgir, or, “dark castles”, are the impressive result of the volcanic past of this unique island set amid the North Atlantic. The remarkable lava formations of Dimmuborgir originated around two thousand three hundred years ago. The area of lava that had previously hardened remained as tall sections of lava with high walls that contained large fissures and holes. The “castles” of Dimmuborgir have created a good deal of interest. According to various legends these “stone buildings” are the home of several incredible beings. Indeed, it is not surprising that the Icelanders once believed that numerous trolls lived here as the lava sculptures had taken on such fascinating forms. The lava landscape of Dimmuborgir that extends for several square kilometres is unique in the world. It is an impressive reminder of Iceland’s volcanic origins.

Iceland: HOT RIVER Reykjadalur near Hveragerthi
Support our channel :
There is a beautiful valley, Reykjadalur valley, in the vicinity of Hveragerði town, only ca 45 km away from Reykjavík, Iceland's capital city, where I live.
The name of the valley, Reykjadalur, means Steam Valley and you will understand why when the valley opens up after the hike. The valley is filled with hot springs and mud pools and there is even a hot river in which one can bathe!
The Reykjadalur valley is part of the Hengill area, but Mt. Hengill is an extinct volcano, which was active 120,000 years ago.
When we last visited Reykjadalur there were 123 cars on the parking lot so we got a little bit startled! Would it be crowded in the valley and impossible to find a good spot in the river?
espite the myriad of cars off we went anyway as the weather forecast had said it would be sunny and still, so we knew it would be a good day to bathe in the warm river. It was overcast when we started the hike, but as I dipped into the warm river the sun came out.
he hike is 3 km long and will take ca 45-60 minutes one way with plenty of photo stops.
On the first part of the trail there are several hot springs and mud pools to the left. And a borehole called Drottningarhola or Queen's borehole.
Be careful where you step here though when you leave the trail and visit the hot pools. Everything is boiling here, so there is no bathing in these pools, they are extremely hot!
