Cerita film dokumenter tentang meletusnya gunung krakatau pertama kali. Krakatau adalah kepulauan vulkanik yang masih aktif dan berada di Selat Sunda antara pulau Jawa dan Sumatra. Nama ini pernah disematkan pada satu puncak gunung berapi di sana (Gunung Krakatau) yang sirna karena letusannya sendiri pada tanggal 26-27 Agustus 1883. Letusan itu sangat dahsyat; awan panas dan tsunami yang diakibatkannya menewaskan sekitar 36.000 jiwa. Sampai sebelum tanggal 26 Desember 2004, tsunami ini adalah yang terdahsyat di kawasan Samudera Hindia. Suara letusan itu terdengar sampai di Alice Springs, Australia dan Pulau Rodrigues dekat Afrika, 4.653 kilometer. Daya ledaknya diperkirakan mencapai 30.000 kali bom atom yang diledakkan di Hiroshima dan Nagasaki di akhir Perang Dunia II.

Letusan Krakatau menyebabkan perubahan iklim global. Dunia sempat gelap selama dua setengah hari akibat debu vulkanis yang menutupi atmosfer. Matahari bersinar redup sampai setahun berikutnya. Hamburan debu tampak di langit Norwegia hingga New York.
Ledakan Krakatau ini sebenarnya masih kalah dibandingkan dengan letusan Gunung Toba dan Gunung Tambora di Indonesia, Gunung Tanpo di Selandia Baru dan Gunung Katmal di Alaska. Namun gunung-gunung tersebut meletus jauh pada masa ketika populasi manusia masih sangat sedikit. Sementara ketika Gunung Krakatau meletus, populasi manusia sudah cukup padat, sains dan teknologi telah berkembang, telegraf sudah ditemukan, dan kabel bawah laut sudah dipasang. Dengan demikian dapat dikatakan bahwa saat itu teknologi informasi sedang tumbuh dan berkembang pesat.
Tercatat bahwa letusan Gunung Krakatau adalah bencana besar pertama di dunia setelah penemuan telegraf bawah laut. Kemajuan tersebut, sayangnya belum diimbangi dengan kemajuan di bidang geologi. Para ahli geologi saat itu bahkan belum mampu memberikan penjelasan mengenai letusan tersebut.

Krakatau, a small island group in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Sumatra and Java is one of the world's most famous volcanoes. It is a mostly submerged caldera with 3 outer islands belonging to the rim and a new cone, Anak Krakatau, that has been forming a new island since 1927 and remains highly active.
Krakatau exploded spectacularly in a devastating Plinian eruption 1883 that killed more than 30,000 people (mostly by the huge tsunamis triggered by the eruption). The eruption was one of the first global news events after telegraph lines had connected the different continents.

Anak Krakatau is an active volcano which has erupted often over the last few years.
This was filmed on 24th December 2017 with lots of smoke and steam constantly coming out of the volcano.
You can do an easy day trip from Jakarta to Anak Krakatau. A 2 hour drive from Jakarta to Carita Beach and then a 1 hour speedboat trip to Anak Krakatau Volcano island in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra.

Day Trip from Jakarta to Anak Krakatau Volcano
Day trip from Jakarta Indonesia to Anak Krakatau (Krakatoa) Volcano in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra.
There are plenty of companies that offer this same day trip, with pick up from your hotel, 2 hour drive to Carita Beach and 1 hour speed boat ride over to Anak Krakatau island. There is also some snorkeling and breakfast and lunch included.

Krakatoa volcano explodes in a spectacular large eruption with a small lateral blast on 17 Oct 2018. The place shown in this video no longer exists: on 22 Dec 2018, the summit cone of Anak Krakatau island, seen here erupting, collapsed into the sea in a massive landslide, triggering a devastating tsunami that killed hundreds of people.
Video was taken during a VolcanoDiscovery expedition to Krakatau from 13-20 Oct 2018. In the afternoon of 17 Oct, a particularly violent explosion occurred as lateral blast that excavated a pit crater beneath the southern lid of the crater, at the same location the September lava flow had overspilled from the crater. By 19 Oct, this new pit had merged with the main crater, enlarging it.

27th August 1883: The eruption of Krakatoa
Krakatoa consists of a mostly-sunken caldera that lies within the Sunda Strait between the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra. Situated on the subduction zone of the Eurasian Plate and the Indo-Australian Plate, the island and its surrounding archipelago were formed by previous volcanic eruptions.
In May 1883 clouds of ash and steam were seen venting from the volcano by the captain of the Elizabeth, a German warship. The intensity of the volcano’s activity varied over the next three months until, on Sunday 26 August, the eruption became significantly more violent and debris was thrown an estimated 15 miles into the air. The earlier celebratory mood of people on the nearby islands soon turned to fear as hot ash and rock began to fall.
The eruption reached its climax the next day. Over the course of five and a half hours beginning at 5:30am, four enormous explosions occurred. The third of these was the most powerful, with the sound being heard up to 3,000 miles away in the Indian Ocean. The explosive power of the eruption is believed to have been the equivalent of 200 megatons of TNT, while the pressure wave is estimated to have travelled around the globe three and a half times. The force of the eruption and the amount of material displaced also caused a number of tsunamis, the effects of which could be felt as far away as South Africa. Over 36,000 people are known to have died.
Over two-thirds of the island of Krakatoa itself disappeared. In the aftermath, the effect of unusually high quantities of ash and sulphur dioxide that had been expelled into the atmosphere disrupted global weather patterns for more than five years.

With a Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 6, the eruption was equivalent to 200 megatons of TNT (840 PJ) -- about 13,000 times the nuclear yield of the Little Boy bomb (13 to 16 kt) that devastated Hiroshima, Japan, during World War II, and four times the yield of Tsar Bomba (50 Mt), the largest nuclear device ever detonated. The cataclysmic explosion was faintly heard as far away as Perth in Western Australia, about 1,930 miles (3,110 km) away, and the island of Rodrigues near Mauritius, about 3,000 miles (5,000 km) away.

The Krakatoa Volcano exploded in 1883, killing an estimated 36,417 people. The explosion is considered to be the loudest sound ever heard in modern history, with reports of it being heard up to 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from its point of origin. The Shock Wave from the explosion was recorded on Barographs around the globe.
Currently, the Krakatoa volcano has re-emerged from the ocean, and is the principal force in the on-going formation of a new island, Anak Krakatoa, or Child of Krakatoa.
Krakatoa was first volcano on my 2012 Indonesia Volcano Expedition totalling hiking and climbing of 11 volcanoes of this one of the volcanically most active regions in the world.
Anak Krakatoa erupted last time in May of this year and is still very active volcano with hot lava dome, fumaroles and the whole volcano cone is warm in places up to about 40-50 C.
Volcano itself is growing in astonishing speed almost 1 inch / day!!! So with history of repetitive eruptions in Sunda Strait -- since Anak Krakatoa is sitting in the middle of two previous huge calderas -- it is only question of time when Anak will erupt in tradition of it's predecessors. The area of Java is heavily populated so eruption of any of volcanoes I visited during my trip would be major concern for Indonesian Government.
We camped on the island of Anak Krakatoa by the foot of the volcano and in the morning we had unexpected visitor -- Krakatoa Dragon -- sneaking around our tents. However in comparison with Komodo Dragons which I saw couple of weeks later this one even with length almost 1.5 meter was just cute home pet. (More about Dragons in other part of the trip diary from Komodo Island).
For your information: Red coloured sea indicates the area, where volcano is growing below sea level and in pace of Anak growth is expected to surface within couple of years or maybe only months.

We approached Anak Krakatau by speedboat from Carita, on Java. Then we hiked through a developing forest to the very steep slope of the volcano. The trail led straight up! The nearest islands are all that's left of Krakatoa (or Krakatau), which famously and hugely erupted in 1883. Decades later, Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatoa in Indonesian) breached the surface within this caldera. It constantly emits sulfurous smoke; it erupts quite frequently and continues to grow. From our vantage while camping on the beach of Sertung island, we could see a red glow at night, emanating from Anak Krakatau's cone.

On 27th August 1883 the uninhabited island of Krakatoa blew itself out of existence with an explosion the equivalent power of 150 million tonnes of TNT. The eruption was so loud that the sound was heard over a twelfth of the Earth’s surface, the shockwaves reverberated around the entire planet, seven times. This explosion also caused giant tsunami, the largest of them twice the height of those of 2004. These enormous waves wiped out 165 Indonesian towns and villages killing over 36,000 people. Within hours news of the disaster was transmitted around the globe, and scientists of the time struggled to comprehend the geological forces that caused the tragedy.
Indonesia has so many volcanoes and earthquakes because of its geographical position. The archipelago that starts in Northern Sumatra stretches over 3,000 miles south. It has been created by the forces where two of the tectonic plates that make up the Earth’s surface, meet. The ocean floor of the Indo-Australian Plate and the Asian landmass of the Burma Plate are in collision. As they push against each other the heavier ocean floor is forced underneath the lighter continental rock. Krakatoa lies directly above this subduction zone.
This film reconstructs the true stories of survivors from their accounts and diaries, to piece together what happened in the months leading up to the most famous eruption of all time.
