Kreuzenstein castle is located just north of Vienna, Austria. It was constructed on the remains of an early medieval castle that had fallen into disrepair and was then demolished during the Thirty Years' War. Intended to be a family vault for the Wilczek family, it was rebuilt in the 19th century by Count Nepomuk Wilczek with money from the family's large Silesian coal mines. Kreuzenstein is interesting in that it was constructed out of sections of medieval structures purchased by the family from all over Europe to form an authentic-looking castle. Thus, the castle can be considered both a 'neo-' and 'original' medieval structure.
Today the castle is a popular tourist destination and museum in the surrounding countryside of Vienna. Through the year from April to October, a falconry show, known as Adlerwarte Kreuzenstein is held on the estate. The recently renovated Burgtaverne Kreuzenstein is a restaurant, furnished to provide the atmosphere of a medieval tavern.

Die Ursprünge der Burg Kreuzenstein gehen wie die der meisten Burgen in Niederösterreich auf das 12. Jahrhundert zurück. Von den Formbachern erbaut, kam sie durch Heirat in den Besitz der Grafen von Wasserburg. Über Ottokar II. von Böhmen gelangte die Burg 1278 in den Besitz der Habsburger.
Bis zum Dreißigjährigen Krieg wurde sie nie erobert. Dann allerdings fiel sie in die Hände des schwedischen Feldmarschalls Lennart Torstensson und wurde bei seinem Abzug 1645 an drei (andere Quellen sprechen von vier) Stellen gesprengt.
Als Ruine kam die Burg im 18. Jahrhundert in den Besitz der Grafen Wilczek, welche ein großes Vermögen durch ihre Kohlengruben in Schlesien angehäuft hatten. Der als Polarforscher bekannt gewordene Johann Nepomuk Graf Wilczek begann ab 1874 an derselben Stelle schrittweise eine Schauburg aufzubauen, die zwar im Aussehen keineswegs der ehemaligen Burg entspricht (romanisch-gotische Musterburg), aber die vorhandenen Reste der mittelalterlichen Burg (vor allem Teile der Ringmauer, Rumpf des Ostturmes und Teile der Kapelle) in die Gestaltung miteinbezieht.
Die gesamte Burg wurde zum einen aus bzw. auf den Resten der mittelalterlichen Burg,
zum anderen aus einer Vielzahl originaler Bauteile errichtet, die Wilczek aus ganz Europa zusammengetragen hatte. Zudem wurde die Burg mit einer großen Sammlung mittelalterlicher Einrichtungsgegenstände und Artefakte ausgestattet, z.B. mit einer ältesten erhaltenen mittelalterlichen Steinschleudern, die aus der Festung Hohensalzburg angekauft wurde.
Die Arbeiten dauerten 30 Jahre - bei der offiziellen Neueröffnung am 6. Juni 1906 war unter anderem Kaiser Wilhelm II. von Deutschland anwesend.
Bei den Kampfhandlungen im Jahr 1945 zwischen der deutschen Wehrmacht und der Roten Armee wurde ein Teil der Räume stark beschädigt und viele Stücke der Sammlung gestohlen. Von den Handschriften der Sammlung Wilczek befinden sich etliche inzwischen in der Österreichischen Nationalbibliothek.
Auf Kreuzenstein wurden einige Filme produziert: 1956 drehte der österreichische Regisseur Willi Forst hier einige Szenen seines Heimatfilms Kaiserjäger sowie 1967 der Regisseur Adrian Hoven den Horrorfilm Im Schloss der blutigen Begierde. In den 1970ern folgten weitere Horrorfilme (z. B. 1970 die deutsche Vampirkomödie Gebissen wird nur nachts von Freddie Francis und 1972 der italienische Horrorfilm Baron Blood von Mario Bava), sowie der Softpornostreifen Die Stoßburg von Franz Marischka. Des Weiteren wurden Teile des deutschen Films Die Einsteiger hier gedreht. Auch zwei Tom-Turbo-Folgen hatten die Burg als Schauplatz. 2004 wurde ein Teil des Films Henker hier gedreht und 2006 eine Musik-DVD der deutschen Gregorianik-Pop-Gruppe Gregorian aufgenommen. Auch der Disney-Film Die drei Musketiere wurde teilweise auf der Burg gedreht. Die Tatsache, dass Kreuzenstein eine sogenannte Schauburg ist, hat immer wieder Filmemacher auf dieses Kleinod aufmerksam gemacht. 2008 wurde die Burg Kreuzenstein erneut als Filmkulisse für die 2011 erschienene amerikanische Produktion Der letzte Tempelritter mit Nicholas Cage genutzt. In dem deutsch-kanadischen mehrteiligen Fernsehfilm Die Säulen der Erde diente Ken Folletts gleichnamiger Roman als Vorlage und die Burg als Kulisse. Mit Rufus Sewell, Matthew Macfadyen, Ian McShane in den Haupt- und Donald Sutherland in einer Nebenrolle begannen 2009 hier die Dreharbeiten.

Nasza redakcja i Stowarzyszenie „Elipsa” współpracuje ze Stowarzyszeniem Austria-Uganda od wielu lat. Podziwiamy ich i wspieramy w miarę naszych skromnych możliwości.

Burg Kreuzenstein / Kreuzenstein Castle
Kreuzenstein Castle (also known as Burg Kreuzenstein) is the beautiful castle of 19th century, located north of the village of Leobendorf, east of the city of Stockerau in the province of Lower Austria in Austria. Schloss Kreuzenstein is first mentioned in the 12th century. The oldest part of the Kreuzenstein Castle dates back to the 1115. It is believed that the first name of the castle Grizanstein» comes from Dietrich von Grizanstaine which was the owner of the castle in the 12th century.
In later centuries, there were many different owners of the castle. In 1278, after the defeat of the Czech King Přemysl Otakar II in the Battle on the Marchfeld, the castle became the property of the Habsburgs and its owner became Rudolph I of Habsburg.
In 1525, the owner of the castle became Nicholas, Count of Salm, the greatest achievement of which was the defense of Vienna during the first siege by the Turks in 1529.
In 1528, in the prison of Grizanstein castle was kept Balthasar Hubmaier, influential German/Moravian Anabaptist leader. He was one of the most well-known and respected Anabaptist theologians of the Reformation. The castle was also twice in the Bohemian owned. n 1620 it was rented out to a Karl Graf Saint Hilaire. In April 1645, during the 30-Years War, the castle was occupied by a Swedish army led by Field-Marshal Thorstenson. They were driven out after a siege by Imperial troops that same year. In the process of the siege, the castle was demolished leaving only a pile of uninhabitable rubble.
Over two hundred years later, Count Johann Nepomuk Wiczek, eminent polar explorer, archaeologist and naturalist, started the rebuilding and restoration of the castle. From his own notes, it is known that first he considered the Kreuzenstein as a burial place for his family. Initially, in 1874, he built the crypt and the chapel. Later these constructions were expanded to the present castle. In particular, one of the reasons of such expansion was the finding a place for the many treasures, collected by Count. Count Wiczek took pains to preserve the original character of the castle, although he also tried to blend different styles together in harmony, as it was fashionably in the late 19th Century. As a result was the built a new castle that was created from the merger of the existing medieval architectural elements such as walls, towers and parts of the chapel. Only few remains of the original citadel were incorporated into a new structure. The process of construction of the castle was led by the famous Austrian architect Carl Gangolf Kayser (until his death in 1895); later it was continued by Humbert Walcher von Molthein and Egon Rheinberger. In general, the construction lasted 30 years (1874-1904) and the works were officially continued with Kaiser Wilhelm II on June 6, 1906.
In 1915, from lightning a fire started in the castle, a fire destroyed part of the archival and library buildings.
In 1945, during fighting between the Red Army and the Wehrmacht castle was severely damaged, and from the castle, some belongings disappeared. Nowadays, most of the manuscripts from the collection of Wilczek set in the Austrian National Library. Currently, the castle is one of the most popular tourist destinations surrounding areas. Quite interesting events are held here in June. Also deserve attention the hotel, equipped in the castle, as well as the exhibition of birds of prey. Kreuzenstein located on top of a small hill, the view from the castle of the surrounding land was called simply delicious. In general, almost all tourists visiting Vienna, consider as their duty to visit and Kreuzenstein.

Am Montag (Feiertag) wollten wir zur Burg Kreuzenstein. Allerdings verpassten wir die Führung durch die Burg, sind anschließend zum Feuerwehr-Heurigen gefahren & haben den Tag am Himmel (mit Blick über Wien) ausklingen lassen.
