Kiramchi is a small village in Udhampur  district of Jammu & Kashmir State. It lies 12 kms north of Udhampur on Udhampur-Lander road  and 67 kms from Jammu. The complex consists of five temples and two small shrines. This valley amidst green mountains is located at an elevation of 730 m above the mean sea level . Two rivulets namely Birunala and Kiramchi are draining this area.
                The local tradition says that in the past it was a halting place on Jammu- Kashmir route through Banihal . According to the contemporary  of Pandavas of Mahabharata was responsible to lay the foundation of this place. Another tradition ,says that Kiramchi was  capital of Bhuti which had been one of the principalities of Jammu region under the successors of  Daya-Karan, a ruler of  Kashmir. According to Diwan  Narsingh Dass Nargis the descendents of king Daya- Karan ruled for many centuries and their  dynasty was known as Bhutials. As per tradition the last ruler of this dynasty named Himmat Singh was defeated by the Maharaja Ranjit Singh and Ultimately  The Bhuti was given to Raja Gulab Singh . Thus Bhuti was included in to the Jammu Kingdom in A.D. 1834.
             The group of temples at Krimachi has been built over the elevated terrace of Biru Nala.

Krimchi temples is a complex of seven ancient temples in Udhampur District in Jammu and Kashmir. It is located at village Krimchi 12 km from Udhampur. This group of temples is locally known as the Pandava Temples.

The temple is believed to be over a thousand years old. According to the Archaeological Survey of India these temples were constructed during 8th or 9th century AD. (inscribed on a board near the entrance of the complex). The temples were constructed in stages. It appears that temples No. 6 and 7 were damaged several centuries ago.

Local belief holds that they go back to the protagonists of the Mahabharata War, or a late Pandava dynasty that ruled in Jammu and Kashmir.

Krimchi is a tiny village in the Udhampur district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This district is famous for its mineral deposits.
Krimchi is the site of one of the oldest temple complexes of Jammu. Believed to have been constructed in the 11th - 12th century AD, this group of temples, also locally known as the Pandava Temples. Consists of 4 large and 3 small temples dedicated to Lord Shiv. The architecture of the temples shows distinct Greek (Hellenic) influences. As per the legends, Raja Kichak of Mahabharat was said to be the creator of town Krimchi and the Kingdom. It is also said that Pandavas while in exile remained there for a long period.
Tourist attractions at Krimchi include the ruins of Three Ancient Temples. These three temples are perhaps the oldest temples in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. These temples are situated on a stone complex and a small stream flows nearby. The architecture on these ruins suggests a very strong Greek influence. The architecture on the walls of these temples is abstract. There are sculptures of deities like Ganesh, Shiva and Parvati. The main temple is around 50 feet high. On their way to these temples, pilgrims usually stop over at the sarai Krimchi. Travel to Krimchi automatically means a tour to Sudhmahadev-Mantalai Shrine. At a little distance from Krimchi lies Pancheri, which is a picturesque Hill Resort. Tours to Krimchi give tourists an opportunity to appreciate the ancient culture and heritage of Kashmir, India.

Vlog 3 Pandav temple Krimchi

Krimchi is the site of one of the oldest temple complexes of Jammu & Kashmir. It can be reached by taking a short detour of about 20 kms along a side road that branches off from the National Highway 1-A, about 12 kms north from Udhampur city

Believed to have been constructed in the 8th – 9th century AD, this group of temples, also locally known as the Pandava Temples. Consists of 4 Large and 3 small temples dedicated to Lord Shiv. The architecture of the temples shows distinct Greek (Hellenic) influences.
As per the legends, Raja Kichak of Mahabharat was said to be the creator of town Krimchi and the Kingdom. It is also said that Pandavas while in exile remained there for a long period.

The local people call this group of temples as Pandava temples and hold the belief that the temples were originally built by Pandavas during their exile period. Some scholars date these temples to second century AD built by Kushan ruler on way to Kashmir. It is believed that Kushan ruler was moved to pity at the sight of sufferings and misery caused by long wars. He became a Buddhist. More realistically these temples appear to have been built at some later date. Dr Mani assigns the temples to 8th or 9th century AD and credits them to be built by Dev dynasty of Jammu.

According to ASI version these temples were constructed during 8th or 9th century AD as displayed on a board near entrance of the complex. The Complete group of temples were not constructed at a time but they have come up by and by. For example temple No. 6 and 7 were damaged centuries back as can be ascertained from the locals. The information passed on by the forefathers to next generations reveal that long back only plinths of these two temples existed.


The monuments are of historical importance. Grassy parks and flower beds attract the visitors and are well maintained by ASI. The immediate requirement is the construction of link road about one kilometer to provide the connectivity. This would not only promote tourism but also add to economy of the region

Tucked away in the town of Krimchi near Jammu, tourists flock to the Three Ancient Temples for a glimpse into the past. The temples are dedicated to one of the gods of the Hindu Trinity, Lord Shiva. Legend has it that Kichak, a king from the Hindu epic Mahabharata, founded the town where the temples are located. Another legend states that the Pandavas called the region home for a substantial amount of time during their exile. The architecture of the temples in the complex display distinct influences of the Hellenic or Greek kingdom. Abstract designs combined with sculptures of Hindu gods, including Ganesha, Parvati and Shiva line the walls. The ASI asserts that the temples were built around the 8th or 9th centuries CE. While five of the seven temples are constructed on a common platform, the rest are based on one much higher than these. Although the temples in the complex are in ruins, they are maintained well by the Archaeological Survey of India. Close to the temple complex runs a small river that adds to the beauty of its surroundings, which makes it a good place to visit when touring with the family.
