The Forts of Kronshtadt, St. Petersburg
The Kronshtadt fortress is a complex of forts of different centuries located on artificial islands. There are no similar naval constructions in the world built in such adverse climatic conditions. The forts fulfilled their mission in early XVIII century during the attack of Swedish landing troops, and in 1854-1855 when they scared away the joined English-French fleet who tried to attack the city.

Kronshtadt St Petersburg Russia View from Cruise Ship
Our cruise ship the Norwegian Star was leaving Russia, and this video shows show interesting scenery of Kronshtadt (on Kotlin island) which is a town that is part of the St. Petersburg area. You see numerous ships of the Russian navy, some perhaps decommissioned, docked at the Kronstadt Ship Repair Plant, plus many small forts. The building with the shiny round dome is the Naval Cathedral in Kronstadt, and the tower is the Kronstadt lighthouse. This area, the Kronstadt Sea Fortress, was apparently one of the most fortified in the world. Finally the ship sails past Fort Totleben. Next came the Kronshtadtsky area, the end of Saint Petersburg, and into the open waters of the Gulf of Finland. Kronshtadtsky. That area sure looks like a giant gate which could potentially swing close and shutdown access to St. Petersburg by water!
KRONSTADT - the Soviet naval base - ROGER GEORGE CLARK photos
The English broadcaster and photographer ROGER GEORGE CLARK visited the island fortress and home base of the Baltic Fleet in September 1990.
'The Communists were still in power in Russia and the island was off-limits to most foreigners. I was the first BBC broadcaster to go there and record a feature for the BBC World Service. I also took my cameras. Time was short - just three afternoons - and the broadcast had priority. So I had to grab what photos I could between recordings. I know of no other Western photographer who visited Kronstadt in Soviet times, let alone tried to produce a photo essay there.
'Kronstadt, one naval officer told me, was the cradle of the Russian navy, the holy of holies. Situated in the Gulf of Finland the fortress was founded in 1704-04 by Peter the Great to protect his new city St Petersburg.
'Later the island became a hotbed of revolution. In 1905 and 1906 Kronstadt sailors mutinied, avenging years of maltreatment by throwing their officers into the ships' furnaces. They played a key role during the 1917 Revolution and revolted again in 1921 when Lenin failed to fulfil the democratic expectations of the revolution.
'What did the Kronstadt sailors want? - freedom of speech and assembly, free trade unions, the re-election of soviets by secret ballot, equal rations for all and for peasants to be able to do what they liked with their land. Lenin was enraged. Trotsky brutally suppressed the uprising, thousands of sailors were killed, executed and sent to concentration camps and the island's population deported. Many executions took place in the wooded ravine crossed by a suspension bridge. This charming-looking area was the scene of mass murder. And Anchor Square, which is dominated by the Sea Cathedral, contains mass graves.
'The crushing of the Kronstadt revolt was a key moment in the Bolshevik revolution. It destroyed all hope that Communism would lead to a more humane and democratic society. Dictatorship now became permanent and spread to other Communist regimes throughout the world. Russians had to wait until the 1980s to loosen its grip.
'I also photographed the former officers' club which still retained it's carved wooden staircase and a beautifully decorated theatre visited by the tsar. In fact, a surprising number of 18th- and 19th-century buildings survive despite revolutions and terrible damage during WWII, including vast warehouses stretching along the canals and a wooden lighthouse. Before 1917 Englishmen were a familiar sight in Kronstadt. One expert claimed half the Russian officers connected with the island's early days were English.
'Coming more up to date ... President Vladimir Putin's father was in the navy and must have known the island well. There were the usual Communist slogans and - a sign of the times - one that declared:- Submariners - what have you done for perestroika?
'A melancholy air hangs over Kronstadt. All that misery has seeped into the atmosphere. But, as you will see, I was greeted warmly by the modern inhabitants. The island was sealed off to outsiders during Communist times. I was one of the first Englishmen made welcome at the naval base since before the First World War in 1914 when Admiral Beatty arrived with a squadron of battle-cruisers. I, however, arrived in less style. A Russian friend drove me there in his Lada.
Now that Kronstadt is open to foreigners I would like to return and spend more time photographing island life in detail. I just scratched the surface in the three afternoons I was there. But whether I shall ever go back remains to be seen.
'Here on YouTube you can find more photos I took in Soviet Moscow and Leningrad/St Petersburg in the 1980s and early 1990s by typing my name - ROGER GEORGE CLARK - into the search box. If you're interested in naval matters you might like my video entitled Soviet sailors in Leningrad. They're just some of the 12,000 photos I took on my visits to Russia. Many more lurk in my archives! You can find more details on my website.'
Kronstadt Naval Cathedral, Saint Petersburg-Russia
Kronstadt Naval Cathedral
The Naval cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Kronstadt is a Russian Orthodox cathedral built in 1903–1913 as the main church of the Russian Navy and dedicated to all fallen seamen. The cathedral was closed in 1929, was converted to a cinema, a House of Officers (1939) and a museum of the Navy (1980). The Russian Orthodox Church reinstalled the cross on the main dome in 2002 and served the first Divine Liturgy in the cathedral in 2005.[1] In 2013, the Patriarch of all Russia, with Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev and his spouse attending, conducted the ceremony of grand reconsecration in the now fully restored cathedral.

Russia: Drone captures ghostly abandoned 'Plague fortress' from Tsar Alexander I era
Drone footage filmed in Saint Petersburg, Saturday, shows a naval fortress named after Russian Emperor Alexander I, which has been abandoned for more than 30 years.
The naval construction, which used to fortify the Kronstadt Fortress in the middle of the 19th century, was built between 1838 and 1845 on an artificial island in the Gulf of Finland, near St. Petersburg and Kronstadt.
During the Crimean War (1853-1856) the fort guarded the base of the Imperial Russian Navy in Kronstadt against the Royal Navy and French fleets, which attempted to enter the Baltic Sea. However, the Alexander Fort has never been involved in hostilities and lost its military value in the 1860s. It was used as a warehouse for mines and ammunition and was expelled from the military register of fortresses in 1896.

Kronstadt forts - Aerial Drone /

Kronstadt!
Episode #27
クロンシュタットはドイツ語みたいな町の名前ですが、実はロシアにあります。ピョートル1世がスエーデンから島を盗んでロシアの物にしました。サンクトペテルブルグから30kmほどはなれたとこにあります。
Kronstadt is a historic town of Kotlin Island, which is located some 30km west of Saint Petersburg, Russia, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. We saw the Naval Cathedral then went for a walk around town. There were heaps of old abandoned buildings that needs renovation and restoration. A charming place - feels like a small country town, and there is nice fresh air. It was rather quiet and chilled with not many tourists, unlike Peterhof and other small towns outside Petersburg.
Russia: Kronstadt diesel-electric sub launched in St. Petersburg
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
The Russian Navy’s Kronstadt Lada-class diesel-electric submarine was launched in Saint Petersburg on Thursday.
The Project 677 vessel boasts anaerobic engines, meaning that the submarine can stay underwater for weeks. It is equipped with six 533-mm torpedo tubes and can fire cruise missiles. Its primary role will be to defend naval bases, coastal waters and sea communication lines.
“All the technical characteristics of this boat are superior to its predecessor, the Project 636 submarine. We believe that the future of the [Russian] Navy, in terms of non-nuclear submarines, lies in Project 677 submarines,” Head of the Admiralty Shipyard Aleksandr Buzakov said, adding that he believed that many of this class of submarine will be made.

Kronschlot Fort
The Kronschlot fort was a fortress designed to be the “lock on the doors to Saint Petersburg” and protect the budding city from the enemy from the sea. The place for the fort was picked by Peter the Great personally, and the construction of the fortress was under his vigilant control. Peter the Great strategic plan proved to be a very long-term one.
