Rjukan, Norway - Gaustabanen, Krossobanen, and Vemork
I made this video while spending a weekend in Rjukan - a beautiful town up in the Norwegian mountains, about a two and a half hour drive from Oslo. While there I visited Gaustabanen (a train through the inside of Gaustatoppen), Krossobanen, and Vemork, and I stayed at Gaustablikk Hotel.

Rjukan is a town and the administrative centre of Tinn municipality in Telemark, Norway. It is situated in Vestfjorddalen, between Møsvatn and Lake Tinn, and got its name after Rjukan Falls west of the town. The Tinn municipality council granted township status for Rjukan in 1996. The town has 3,386 inhabitant.

We visited a place called Rjukan where the heavy water sabotage found place during the world war II. I allways wanted to take the cable lift to the top since i was a kid. I had a hudge interest for cable lifts in my younger days.
About Krossobanen
First cable-car
Krossobanen is the first cable car to be built in Northern - Europe. Krossobanen whisks you up to the foot of Hardangervidda, Norway's largest national park.
It is Scandinavia's oldest and most original two-way cable-car that is still in regular traffic. You can find it in Rjukan - about 1 km west of the city center. On the lower station Krosso, there is a large free car park. From here passengers are being transported - in about 4.5 min. - up to 886 meters above sea level to the top station Gvepseborg.

From the viewing platform at the top of the station building, you will see the magnificent view of the entire , Rjukan and the areas of the heavy water sabotage, Gaustatoppen and Gausdalen. Approximately 100 m north is Gvepseborg Café which serves delicious food in beautiful surroundings. You can also attend natural activities in the area of the Hardangervidda - which is Europe's largest national park. The trip takes from the bottom station Krosso (403 m) to the top station Gvepseborg (886 m) about 4 ½ minutes.

Krossobanen er Nord-Europas første taubane. Navnet har den fått etter gårdsnavnet Krosso. Den ble bygget i 1928 som en gave fra Norsk Hydro til innbyggerne på Rjukan, slik at de skulle kunne komme seg opp i sola i vinterhalvåret.

Krossobanen is an aerial tramway in Rjukan, Norway, and was the first of its kind in Northern Europe. It was built in 1928 by Bleichert as a gift from Norsk Hydro to the people of Rjukan (most of them Hydro employees), offering them a view of the sun which is obscured by the surrounding mountains during the winter months from October to March.
The horizontal distance between the lower and the upper station is 814 meters and the difference in altitude is 495 meters, which yields an average incline of 0.6: 1 (in other words, it climbs 60 centimeters for each meter traveled).

A ride on Europe's first cable car at Krossobanen in Norway's Telemark region is a great experience. After the short ride in the cable car. A 4.6 km hike takes you to the top of the mountain with views of gaustatoppen mountain in the distance.
