38 Fowlie House
Fowlie House / Kry-Art Studios / The Kings Bakery / The Village Bookshop
24 Main Street North, Bayfield, Ontario Canada
James Fowlie, blacksmith, had the first part of this house built in 1889. A 1½ storey addition was made to the front of the house in 1893. It is Ontario Gothic in design with a centre gable. It is a timber frame structure with horizontal V-groove siding. Between the house and the Little Inn, Fowlie built a fine brick blacksmith shop in 1890. A fence, like the one around the front yard of Fowlie House, was once common and necessary to keep roaming animals out of the garden.
The house has been occupied by various businesses since the 1970s. In a rear shed, Kry-Art Studio now offers interesting art and rents tandem bikes purchased by a Bayfield resident from the Port of Montreal. Proceeds of bike rentals support the efforts of the Bayfield Historical Society. The Village Bookshop operates in the front part of the building.
