Ait Benhaddou Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Ait Benhaddou in Morocco.
Along the southern border of the High Atlas in the heart of Morocco is the impressive village of Ait Benhaddou. The settlement was once situated along one of the country's most important caravan routes but the region's ancient trading routes are no longer used today. A walled village, the Ksar, was founded in the 12th century by the people of Ait Aissa and its narrow lanes lead up to several fortress-like citadels, the five main Kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou. For visitors the narrow, medieval lanes of the village are tantamount to a confusing maze however the plain but nevertheless expressive architecture of the houses has a unique and magical atmosphere.Fortunately, the cultural and historical value of this unique Moroccan clay village has now been fully recognised otherwise each of the houses, towers and kasbahs of Ait Benhaddou may have long since disappeared beneath the sands of time.

Morocco, Maroc, Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou
Lawrence d'Arabie (1962)
Sodome et Gomorrhe (1962)
L'Homme qui voulut être roi (1975)
Bandits, bandits (1981)
Le Diamant du Nil (1985)
Tuer n'est pas jouer (1987)
La Dernière Tentation du Christ (1988)
Un thé au Sahara (1990)
Kundun (1997)
La Momie (1999)
Gladiator (2000)
Alexandre (2004)
Babel (2006)

It is situated in Souss-Massa-Drâa on a hill along the Ounila River and is known for its kasbahs, although they take damage with each rainstorm. Most of the town's inhabitants now live in a more modern village at the other side of the river; however, eight families still live within the ksar.

The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou - Morocco
#morocco #aitbenhaddou #andy1803
Ait Ben Haddou is certainly one of the most famous attractions of the entire Morocco. Located in the Ouarzazate district, on the southern slopes of High Atlas, this settlement is well known for the Ksar, a fortified village well protected by defensive walls and towers. Houses inside the fortification are crowded together. Some of them are similar to little castle with their own towers and gates. Inside the settlement just narrow alleys, mostly with stairs, to climb over the hill. There is not space enough for cars or barrows. The only way to move around the Ksar is walking or riding a donkey.
The Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou is a well preserved example of earthen architecture of the pre-Saharan regions of Morocco. The site is an UNESCO world heritage.
A part from its architectural and historical value, Ait Ben Haddou is a magic place. Since your first steps in the valley, crossing the river on sandbags means diving into the past centuries. Camels feed just out of the fortified walls. The wind and the river play their music in the air. Walking along the stairs from the bottom of the village upwards is a full immersion into rural life of Berbers people. And, at the end of the walk, You’ll reach the flat top of the hill where a spectacular 360 degrees view will surprise you. The Ounila Valley is in front of you and the Atlas Mountains covered by snow behind.
This site is also famous as a perfect location of several movies production (the Gladiator, i.e.) and I am sure that, after one day spent inside the Ksar, breathing its epic atmosphere, you’ll understand why.
To those who love photography, I suggest to stay overnight (there are several nice hotels in Ait Ben Haddou) to be on site at sunset when sun grazing light hits the walls of the buildings and makes colors so brilliant.
This video has been filmed with an Olympus Om-D Em5 MKII mirrorless camera and the little Eken H8R action cam. Photos have been shot with a Nikon D3100 by Francesca Sparatore.
Music track is “Arabian Fallnight” by Douglas Maxwell and is from YouTube Library.

We stop at Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou in Ouarzazate to tour the kashbah and also enjoy some delicious Moroccan food. After we visit Studio Cinema Atlas also in Ouarzazate before heading to our hotel in the Dades valley for the night.
Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou aka Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is located in Ounila Valley on the southern hills of High Atlas Mountain and a great example of southern Moroccan architecture. This is in the Ouarzazate province. Lots of famous movies have been filmed here such as Gladiator, The Mummy, Indiana Jones, Game of Thrones and more. It's a great example of what like in the 17th century.
Studio Cinema Atlas aka Studio Cinema Ouarzazate - Measured by acreage this is the world's largest film studio and you can tour it. Lots of relics from old movie sets are here and it was first developed in 1983 by Mohamed Belghmi. Some movies and films created here include Lawrence of Arabia, The Jewel of the Nile, Game of Thrones, Babel and more.
To get to the Sahara desert from Marrakech we need to cut through the Atlas Mountains, it was an experience and a fun one at that.

Ait Benhaddou - Where Hollywood Films are made (and still being made) - Morocco Episode 07
Ait Benhaddou is again a beautiful UNESCO heritage sight of Morocco for a good reason. It is totally unique, and when I first saw it on pictures I thought “I wanna go there one time”. One more thing for my bucketlist I am able to cross out. Time had come to wander around in this amazing fortified village. It is no surprise that Hollywood has already filmed many movies here like Gladiator (2000), Alexander (2004), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Babel (2006), One Night with the King (2006), Prince of Persia (2010), Son of God (film) (2014) and Games of Thrones. Also for this reason you find in Ouarzazate big filmstudios like the Atlas Corporation Studios. Hope you enjoy my little video and get a good impression of this place.

Ait Benhaddou, Moroccoآيت بن حدّو - Game of Thrones
Ait Ben Haddou and Dades Gorge!
One of the popular things for tourists to do in Morocco is to experience the Sahara. Excursions to do just that can be purchased from Marrakesh and Fez. For just 1 night's stay in the desert, it is a 3 day trip so set aside some time.
My twin, Joe, and I were picked up in Marrakesh for the long journey. On the first day of our trip, the main stop we made was to the Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a traditional earthen village that is hundreds of years old. It was one of the filming sites for many movies and series including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Prince of Persia. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I've never really seen anything like it. The architecture and views were incredible. It is a true honor to experience something so unique and beautiful first-hand.
We ended the day by viewing Dades Gorge and staying in a hotel in the gorge.
Stay tuned for Day 2 of our Sahara adventure where we get to ride camels into the desert and stay overnight in a Bedouin encampment.

Ait Benhaddou | MOROCCO
During our 3 weeks backpacking trip around Morocco, Ouarzazate nicknamed THE DOOR OF THE DESERT was one place we stayed at.
Ouarzazate attracts numerous Hollywood projects due to its beautiful location and big studios.
Day trips to the fortified village of Ait BenHaddou, a UNESCO World heritage site is reccomended.
Probably the most recognisable Game of Thrones set in Morocco.
We had met 2 other travellers from Portugal in Fez and we decided to travel together however long our journey took us together.
From Ourazazate, we took a return grand taxi (250dh for 4 people) to Ait BenHaddou. Make sure to haggle and don’t settle on the first price. There was an agreement with the driver that he would return back to collect us .
Journey takes 40mins
It was a nice experience. And you don’t get hassled as much in these areas compared to Marrakesh.
And if you have time, do visit the Kasbah Taourirt located in the centre of Ouarzazate. Ticket cost
20dh.
