Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory documentary shoot -Taiping Malaysia
Kuala Sepetang Charcoal factory is a famous cultural tourist spot in Taiping Malaysia.
I had a chance to photoshoot this place to showcase it's wonderful tradition that have been there for almost a century already.
This photoshoot was kind of a documentary/photojournalism type of shoot. I was using my canon m50 camera and ef-m lens, 22mm f2 and 11-22mm, i have also my sony a7ii with the canon 50mm f1.8 stm lens. The shoot really push the limits of the canon m50 low light capabilities.
I have posted some photos on my Instagram and Facebook Page so pls. follow me my social sites.

Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory
Although we all have used it one way or another, not many of us pay much attention to the humble charcoal. For those who are curious, charcoal in fact has a fascinating history as well as a very interesting manufacturing process. A visit to one of the oldest charcoal factory in Malaysia at Kuala Sepetang revealed much of the work that goes behind in creating the black, brittle material. Mangrove Charcoal Factory at Kuala Sepetang, Taiping Perak
It all start with harvesting the mangrove trees. The trees need a certain size which is reached after 30 years. When an area is harvested, new trees are planted and that area is not touched then for 30 years.
The trees are transported with the high tide into the factory. The trees can not be processed with the bark so workers have to clean the trees first. The trees are than transported to igloo which look like cones were the baking process starts.
These cones are all handmade without any architecture drawing design. The master building simply builds them still out of memory and experience.
Cone is usually last for around 15 years. Once the cone is finished, the logs are brought inside and heated. The process is in fact very simple and complicated at the same time.
It's all about the right temperature, so the process have to be monitored 24 hours a day. Slight temperature drops or overheating with just a few degreed can waste all the logs in processing.
The logs are standing up inside the cone on stone. Then the cone is almost closed apart of a small hole where a fire is burning. This fire heats up the cone and water will start to vaporize from the logs. Inside the cone there is now a temperature of 220°C.

Taiping, Lake Gardens, Kuala Sepetang Charcoal Factory, Maxwell Hill aka Bukit Larut
is an old town located in Larut, Matang and Selama District, Perak, Malaysia. With a population of 217,647 (in 2011), it is the second largest town in Perak after Ipoh, the state capital and the important city in Perak highway. Taiping took over Kuala Kangsar's role as the state capital from 1876 to 1937, but was then replaced by Ipoh. Its development slowed down after that, but in recent years the town has begun developing rapidly again. Perak State Museum is located in the town.
Taiping also receives some limelight for being the wettest town in Peninsular Malaysia. The average annual rainfall is about 4,000mm in Taiping while the peninsula's average is 2,000mm – 2,500mm. Its unusual rainfall has also led to a fertile collection of flora and century-old rain trees in the Taiping Lake Gardens.

THE COLLAB EPISODE (studio assembly & kuala sepetang charcoal factory)
It’s a Sunday and what better way to spend the time than to shoot another vlog, edit some videos, learn more about color grading and give the new studio some much needed organization. Oh yeah, and feature Satish’s videos too.
The framer by profession (photographer hobbyist) spent the day traversing several hundreds of kilometres to the rural parts of Malaysia’s north. This time he paid a visit to the charcoal factory in Kuala Sepetang, Perak, as well as the surrounding satellite towns. Stash’s shots were filmed with a Fujifilm X-T1 mirrorless digital camera.
I’m pushing him to shoot vlogs. Some ground is being gained. We’ll see what happens. :)
