REVIEW: KUAN ZHAI XIANG ZI (KUANZHAI ANCIENT STREET OF QING
This collection of small alleys, known as Kuan Zhai Xiang Zi or Kuanzhai Ancient Street of Qing Dynasty, is one of the major tourist attractions in Chengdu. It's probably more known with Chinese tourists than foreigners though. The area features a collection of historic houses with shops, restaurants, cafes and bars.
Live: Get charmed at Chengdu's Kuanzhai Alley 在成都的宽窄巷子里走一走
Kuanzhai Alley, known as Wide and Narrow Alley, is a famous historical and cultural street in southwestern China's Chengdu city. With a history that dates back to the Qing Dynasty, the Alley was renovated and opened to the public in 2008; and is said to be the only representation of a hutong culture in Southern China. One can experience all things Chengdu in this Alley: Sichuan hotpot cuisine, exotic street food, opera in the form of a face-changing performance, ear candling, teahouses and cafes. Tourist flow is expected to be the highest during China's Golden Week. But CGTN's Wei Lynn Tang tries to beat the crowd and takes you to explore all the above, and see what exactly this laidback city has to offer.

Chengdu, China: Kunzhai Xianzi Alleys (Wide and Narrow Alleys)
Wide and Narrow Alley (Kuanzhai Xiangzi)
Consisting of Wide Alley (Kuan Xiangzi), Narrow Alley (Zhai Xiangzi), Well Alley (Jing Xiangzi) three parallel ancient city alleys and 45 courtyards along them, Wide and Narrow Alley is one of Chengdu’s historical and cultural reserves, together with Daci Temple reserve and Wenshu Monastery reserve. It is a microcosm of the city’s history as well as a deep mark in local people’s memory.
The history of Wide and Narrow Alley can be dated back to the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911 AD). At that time, the area was a city within the Chengdu city called Mancheng City or Shaocheng City, where the court quartered troops. As time passed by, the city decayed and only the Wide Alley and Narrow Alley were left. In 2003, renovation work of the two alleys began, aiming to build a complex cultural and business street with the functions of tourism and recreation. On June 14, 2008, the newly renovated Wide, Narrow and Well Alley were opened to the public, located in nowadays Qingyang District, to the east of Tongren Road and west of Changshun Street. Nowadays, Wide and Narrow Alley is a popular entertainment and nightlife block as well as a famous tourism site, with lots of restaurants, pubs, teahouses, and stores selling featured souvenirs. 宽窄巷 - Wide and Narrow Alley in Chengdu, Sichuan 四川成都. A semi-ancient alley where some buildings date back to the Qing dynasty, while other are modern replicas made using traditional architectural techniques. Part 2/2, a neat demonstration of someone making the chewy glutinous snack 三大炮 at the end. The name means 3 big bangs because they bounce the sticky balls off of a drum, for some reason, making a series of bangs before they land in a sweet flour made from peanuts and sugar. Then they're covered in warm molasses and peanuts and served. Tasty and dramatic. Our guy fucked up a little but they still tasted fine.

Shuffling with the crowds along Kuan Zhai Alley, a network of lanes dating from the Qing dynasty, I breathe in deep.Afamiliar blend of smoky chilli, toasted Sichuan peppercorns and crushed garlic invades my nostrils; it instantly feels like home. This is my first visit to Chengdu in three years, and, like each of my previous visits, the city has taken on a new visage. But in a place like this, it doesn’t take long to get reacquainted. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province in south-west China and arguably where the cream of Chinese cuisine can be found. It’s impossible to walk down a street without smelling something delicious. There are a few spots I always visit because I know I’ll find the best street food.Kuan Zhai Alley is one, crammed with stalls selling bites such as guo kui – fried bread filled with pork mince.Although Chengdu has a reputation for good eating, it is the history and culture of this one-time capital of China that draws visitors.Kuan Zhai Alley, for example, was once home to Manchu soldiers during the Qing dynasty and is one of the few remaining examples of imperial-era architecture in the city. For those after a more modern feel, Taikoo Li is perhaps the best example. Housed in imperial Chinese-style wood and glass buildings are luxury stores including Alexander McQueen, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. But at the heart of this faux-retro complex is Daci Temple, a Buddhist sanctuary originally built between the 3rd and 4th Centuries. It has been rebuilt several times over the years. Despite efforts to harmonise the Taikoo Li architecture with that of the temple, the juxtaposition of old and new is sharpest here.Outside the temple, an afternoon tea will cost you the equivalent of £25. But inside, on rickety chairs, you can still experience the tradition for as little as £1.That’s the thing about this city: the way it keeps pace with modernity means it never feels foreign, wherever you’ve come from.
