Kudumiyanmalai ~ Pudukkottai - Tuft on Lord Shiva's Head
The legend behind the name transformation as Kudumiyanmalai as follows:-
King Sundarapandian had a custom, that he often visited this temple at evening, to worship lord Shiva. The temple guru used to offer the king with the prasadam, that is, the sacred things offering to god, including food, flowers, and so on. One day, that prasadam had been given to one temple dancer, for what, the temple guru had decided that the king wouldn't have visited the temple, as there had been so late, to close the temple. But, the king had turned up, however very late to the temple.
Having noticed the visit of the king, the temple guru became very frightened enough, what to do with the king, for the prasadam he would have to give him. Suddenly, he got back the prasadam from the temple dancing girl, and gave it to the king. In the prasadam, the king noticed some strands of hair on the flowers, as those flowers, had been worn by the dancing girl, before she had given back to the temple guru.
Having noticed the strands of hair on the flowers, which had been given as prasadam by the temple guru, the king wanted the explanations for the strands of hair found on the prasadam. The temple guru, in no way to escape from the situation, lied to the king that the strands of hair, supposed to come from the tuft of Lord Shiva, which has been called as kudumi, in Tamil language.
Having not satisfied with the answer, he had listened from the temple guru, the king locked him inside the temple, and told the temple guru, that he would come on tomorrow, and would check, whether the presiding deity, was having a tuft on His head, or not.
Having imprisoned within the temple premises, the temple guru, the whole night, had prayed to lord Shiva, that he could have been saved, from the severe punishment to be given by the king, if, what he had told to the king, would have been proved as false statement.
The very next day, the king rushed to the temple, and wanted to find out the truth, behind the statement of that temple guru. For that, he asked the temple guru to show the presiding deity, without any flower decoration and all. The temple guru also obeyed the king, and had done the same. What a surprise! There, Lord Shiva in Linga form had been seen with tuft, on top of that Linga.
The king, overwhelmed with surprise, tried to pull the tuft, away from the top of that Linga. Alas! he failed in that task, instead, bleeding had occurred from the tuft of that Linga. The King and the gathering in the temple premises shouted with the spiritual joy, that, what He had been told by the temple guru was really a truth. But, the temple guru, only knew that he had been saved from the severe punishment of the king, by the grace of Lord Shiva, who proved that the tuft had been formatted for His devotee's freed from the guilty.
As the presiding deity here, has resided with a tuft on the top of the Linga, He has been praised as Lord Kudumiyar and hence the hillock has been called as Kudumiyanmalai. Since the word tuft means 'Kudumi', in Tamil language. Once again, in Tamil language, Sigai means ‘hair’ and 'giri' means top. Hence the presiding deity, here in this temple, has also been called as Sihagirishwarar.

Sittannavasal ~ Pudukkottai / Crown of Jain Sculptures & Mural Paintings
Sittannavasal, which is situated very near to Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu, India, has been one of the early Jain temples in Tamil Nadu, belonged to 9th century. This rock cut temple is on a fine hillock, which is very popular for its bas- relief sculptures, and for its antique fresco paintings, which have come next to the frescoes of Ajanta paintings, of India.
This rock cut Jain temple was excavated in the early pandya period, that is, A.D. 7th century. This cave temple is facing towards west, and it consists of a square Sanctum Sanctorum, and a rectangular artha mandapam. The rear wall of the Sanctum Sanctorum contains bas-relief structures of three Jain Tirthankaras, in sitting posture. The side wall of the artha mandapam, shows the bas-relief structure of, Parsvanatha, and Jain Acharyas.
This cave temple has been decorated with mural paintings, made of vegetable colors. The ceiling of the artha mandapam has been depicted with the lovely paintings of a lotus tank, with realistic figures of men, animals, flowers, birds, fishes, and geometrical motifs, using with ‘Fresco-secco’ technique. The colors used in the painting have been black, green, yellow, orange, blue, red and white. This recalls the 'Samava sarana', faith in Jainism. The facade of the pillars has been painted with dancing girls, the king, and queen. These paintings have been representing the typical, early painted tradition of the south, and comparable with those of Ajanta.
An inscription on a rock, records that the renovation work had been carried out to the Sanctum Sanctorum, and additional of a Structural mandapam, during the period, of the early Pandya king, Sri Vallabha, that is, the period of A.D. 815 to 862, by certain Ellen Gowthaman, alias Madurai Aasiriyar.

Thiru Kolakudi ~ 3 Tier Shiva Temple / Near Pudukkottai
Thiru kolakkudi, which is situated in Pudukkottai district, and also very near to Thirupathur, and Rangium, is well known for its antiquity. Its Lord Shiva temple, under the control of Kundrakudi Athinam. This temple, as like as the other temple of Piran malai, which is also under the control of Kundrakudi Athinam, has three tier structures, namely bottom, middle and upper, in its temple structure.
Here Lord Shiva has been worshiped upon three forms of structures, as well, in three names, named as poiya mozhi Eswarar, Shiva Tharma purishwarar, and kaghola Purisher. There had been a touching, and real incident had taken place at the end of 19th century, related to this temple history, which could bring tears from every one of us.
On those days, there has been a customized system in some temples, that a group of ladies could have practiced system of 'Deva thaasy', which means that, they had been bounded with devotional tie ups with that temple, by having engaged in the temple day today activities, without having got married.
In that family of Deva thasi, one girl named as, Davy was in love with one of the temple guards. Their love grew day by day. Temple car had been designed, and created, and also ready for the temple ceremony. A huge gathering of, people of Thiru kolakudi, and its surrounding were ready for pulling the huge ropes of the temple car, and also attempted in action. But, that gigantic temple car even didn't move a bit.
Then, an old man, who was one among the huge gathering, began to tell the divine saying, which has been assumed, as the words from god, that, in order to move that temple car, one human life might have been sacrificed as the offering. As the old man, said like this, who could come forward, for this type of human sacrifice. Everybody stood still, just remained silent, and waited for the moment, that what could next happen, and whoever could come forward to sacrifice their life.
Amidst the silence, that same old man had noted out, that he preferred one man, for this type of human sacrifice, who had been, none other than the temple's door step guard, who had been also the lover of that deva thasee, Davi.
While having observed these words, from that old man, the temple's door step guard, had accepted whole heartedly, that those words, had come out, from not that old man, instead from the god, as he was a pious devotee of Lord Shiva. He laid down, in front of, one of the huge wheels of that newly made temple car. While people pulled the ropes, with tears rolled down their cheeks, the great man, that is, the doorstep guard had sacrificed his life, that he had been decapitated on the ground.
At once this sad news had reached Davi, she rushed to the spot, where the temple car stood. She climbed in to that car, and from there, she plunged at head straight to the ground, where his divine lover's beheaded body laid down. Both of them had sacrificed their lives for the people of Thiru kolakudi.

Aavudaiyar kovil ~ Temple built by Manickka Vasagar *
Thiruperunthurai, once upon called, has now been called as Aavudayar koil, which is situated near Aranthangi and Pudukottai, of Tamil Nadu, India. There has been a legend that why this place had been called as 'Thiruperumthurai'. Once upon this place could have been known as 'Shiva puram', and this had been governed by a Pandyan king, named as 'Suguna pandiyan'.In order to do the daily routines of poojas and other holy rituals to the God 'Athma nathar', and the goddess 'Shiva yogambigai', three hundred brahmanas had been brought up here, from waranasi, which is now called as Kasi.
The king Suguna pandian wanted to honor them with 300 plates, full of gold coins with silk, for the three hundred brahmanas one by one. while having done so, only 299 plates had been honored to the 299 brahmanas, and found one brahmin missed in the lineup. They searched for the one, and at last, lord Athma nathar transformed as the missed brahmin, from the 'Kurunthai' tree, and had accepted the honor from the king.Hence this god has been called as 'Munnootru, oruvar', that is, the 300th person.
Then, the king suguna pandian had given them, that is, to the 300 brahmanas, the authentic disclosure that, thereafter, that place shiva puram could have been their property, and no body could have the power to inheirt that place. That brahmanas were also doing their routine god's work properly. As those brahmanas were tightly engaged with the temple's work, they didn't have spare time to teach their children. For that, they worshiped the lord 'Athma nathar' to dissolve the problem. In order to respect their prayer, lord Athma nathar came as a old brahmin, and became the guru of their children.
Time was passing smoothly, until the reign of Suguna pandian and his successors. At the reign of Ghaumara pandian, a king named as 'Lundakkan', a king of neighbourhood, wanted to inherit the place Shiva puram. He was also a friend of the king Ghaumara pandian. For that, he illegally inherited the authentic disclosure, of Shiva puram. So, without any option, the 300 brahmanas had appealed for their rights, over their land Shiva puram, at the royal court of the king Ghaumara pandian.
At the royal court of the king Ghaumara pandian, the king asked the inheritants of the 300 Brahmanas, whether they had kept the authentic disclosure of inheritance, with them, or otherwise, they could have got, any evidence for that. For that both questions of the king, the brahmanas simply said 'No', as the authentic disclosure had been already robbed by the king illegally. Once again, for the evidence, nobody could come forward, as they would have been killed by that tyrant king. The king again asked them for any other proof, regarding the nature of the land. For that also they couldn't able to give any proper answer.
Then the king Ghaumara pandian asked his friend, the tyrant king Llundakkan, about the proof of his inheritance over Shiva puram. For that he pointed out two false statements, one that, for a long time, that place Shiva puram had been under his reign, and the other, that if anybody could drill that land, even at the height of two palm trees, there could have been, no chance of water availability there.Again the king Ghaumara pandian, interogated the brahmanas, whether thay had such type of deep evidence of experince, what the king Llundakkan said, over their land Shiva puram. That brahmanas simply said 'no'.
But the old brahmin teacher of Shiva puram, who had been, none other than our lord Athma nathar, came forward at the royal court and disclosed the king Ghaumara pandian, that he had the proof of long term experience, that for each and every dug, on the ground with a spade, water could have sprinkled over the face.Every body in the court, on having heard that old brahmin teacher statement, hardly believed that the brahmanas could have, almost lost their rights, over their land Shiva puram. The king Llundakkan also was very happy, as this couldn't have a chance to win.

Namakkal ~ Narashimghar with Namagiri Thayar * Revised
This Hill is seen as single rock-form and has it's legend that it had been shifted to here by lord Anjaneyar from the river-side of Kantagi at Nepal on Thretha- yuga. This rock has it's salient feature that it belongs to a divine class of Salagramam,on which, has it's impression of lord Narashimgha murthy.
The Legend behind this Rock Fort:-
On Krutha yuga, the 'Thwarabalaghs', that is the gatekeepers of Vaigundam (Abode of lord Vishnu), had been punished by lord Vishnu that they should take birth as demons in their coming three births and could reach Him again only after they would have been perished by Him. The Thwarabalags were 'Jeyan & Vijayan'. This had been due to the carelessness in their duty, when they had admitted the sage 'Thurvasar, who had kicked on the chest of Vishnu, while He was in 'Ananthasayanam', since he thought that Vishnu had ignored his entry. As
the thwarabalaghs didn't do their proper duty, they had to suffer, by taken birth as demons.
Those two cursed thwarabalaghs named 'Jeyan and Vijayan', took birth as the fierce demons named as 'Hiranyakshan' & Hiranyakashipu. As they were demons by birth, they only did cruel things to the three world. Hiranyakshan had
been perished by lord Vishnu, by one of His incarnations, called as 'Varagha' (wild boar), when the demon had taken the world into the deep sea and had hidden it.Vishnu, who took Varagha avatar had redeemed the earth from danger. On the other hand,Hiranyakashipu, who had been empowered by the immense boons, also thought that he was the god and forced everyone to worship him. Vishnu made His 'Chakrayutha' to be born as his son Braghalath, who had been fixed as the fate of the demon.
Hiranyakashipu had been gifted with immense boons by his hard-core penance towards lord Brahmah Deva. He had been gifted with that he could hardly die by human, devas, demons, animals, birds and couldn't die in 'day','night',in and out and so many. So, he never thought about his death, since nobody could able to kill him.But the fate, which is always great, made Prahalatha (Vishnu's Chakra) to take birth as his child.Even from the fetus itself,Prahalatha had been the fierce devotee of lord Vishnu by the preaching of the divine saint Naratha to his
mother, that was Hiranyakashipu's wife. This devotion towards Vishnu, grew larger, even he met with many death sentences like poison, fire, rolled down from the hill etc,by his father.
At one stage, the demon Hiranyakashipu couldn't tolerate the pious love of his son towards lord Vishnu. He asked his son that whether, as lord Vishnu had been omnipresent, could He (Vishnu) be resided in a pillar,at which Hiranyakashipu pointed out? Yes, Indeed, said Prahalatha. At once, the demon broke down the
pillar. What a surprise! From that pillar Vishnu jumped out, as in the form of 'Narashimghan', who was the mixed proportionof 'Man & Lion', dragged Hiranyakashipu to the doorstep and placed him on His thighs and pierced his stomach by the sharp nails into pieces and made him death. It was neither day nor night, but only dusk.Narashimghan had been neither man nor animal and only killed the demon by nails.
After the death of the demon Hiranyakashipu,Narashimghar's wrath couldn't cool down that nobody could dare to go near him, except the small boy Prahalatha.Praghalatha touched lord Vishnu who had been in the form of Narashimghar and made Him cool. After that He disappeared in the rock, which had been worshiped as long as Praghalatha was alive. Here,we could remember one thing that the rock in which lord Narashimghar had disappeared, had been the same that Anjaneyar had lifted from the river Kantaghi at Nepal. In Thretha yuga, there had been a fierce battle, in between Rama and Inderjith, the son of the demon Ravana.Inderjit, shooted one 'Brahmasthira' towards Lakshmana and he fell down as dead.

Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple/Thiruthuraipoondi/Tamil Nadu
Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple at Thiruthuraipoondi in Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu is dedicated to Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Shiva is worshipped in the temple as Marundeeswarar and Gajasamhara Murthy. Goddess Parvati is worshipped as Periyanayaki.
Why the Shrine is Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple?
A unique aspect of the temple is that Shiva murti faces West. It is said that worship of Shiva here helps in attaining moksha on earth – escape from cycle of birth and death. Self realization dawns on a person and he sheds ignorance. Piravi means birth. Worship here is to put an end to the suffering of birth - life - death - birth.
The temple has subsidiary shrines dedicated to manifestations of Shiva and Mother Goddess. Ganesha and Muruga are also worshipped in the temple.
Thiruthuraipoondi Temple and Ashwini Nakshatra
The temple is also associated with the Ashwini Nakshatra. Those people born in Ashwini Nakshatra offer prayers here to get relief from horoscope related problems. Special pujas are offered here by Ashwnin Nakshatra people.
Story of Thiruthuraipoondi Piravi Marundeeswarar Temple
Legend has it that a demoness got back her husband due to her purity, piety and worship of Shiva and Goddess Parvati at the spot where the temple is located. A demon used to devour people and it was objected by his wife who was different from her kind. Once the demon devoured a boy who was going to the banks of Ganga to perform Shradh and Tarpan (annul rituals dedicated to dead parents and ancestors).
The demoness tried to reason with the demon but he did not listen and devoured the boy. The demon immediately died.
The demoness then prayed to Shiva and Parvati for relief. Goddess Parvati appeared before her and restored her husband and the boy.
The boy wanted to know why his life was restored. Mother Goddess told him that she cannot take the life of a person abruptly when he was heading to perform Shradh with devotion and dedication.
The demoness got the boon that those who offer prayers in the spot where Goddess manifested will be blessed with good husbands. Prayers offered here will also bring about change in the character of bad husbands.
